  • Royal Mail Delivers: The Great British Fashion Stamp Set

As a long-time stamp collector (yeah, I know, nerdy), you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that the Royal Mail service recently launched a new series of stamps entitled "The Great British Fashion Stamp Set." Created by the oh-so-talented London-based graphic designer Johnson Banks with the camera of the famous fashion photographer Sølve Sunds, the line honors ten top English fashion houses.

To create the images, Banks and Sundsbo holed up in Solve's London studio for two days with some awesome clothes and live models to create unique posturing and flow. After the pictures were taken, they took out the models to let the gorgeous textures, colors, and designs speak for themselves.

Not only do I want the stamps . . . but I could sure use some of those clothes in my closet!

    Love this flowing wrap dress!

  • Haircut Crush: The Shoulder Grazer

Ever since Victoria Beckham tweeted this:

... I've been head over heels for her new cut! And with summer swiftly approaching, I know I can't be the only one with a hankering to chop it all off. And, as a big supporter of celebrity inspiration (I totally got "the Kristin" in 2005, ie: Laguna Beach), I put together this collection of awesome, shoulder-grazing, long bobs, or "The Lob" as its coming to be known. Some are even saying it's "the new Rachel"! That's high praise... so print this out, hand it to your stylist, and let him/her work his/her magic!

  • Looks We ♥: Patterned Platforms

Now that sandal season is upon us, allow me to introduce my latest and greatest obsession: the patterned platform.

Prada hit the nail on the head last spring (below), and Charlotte Olympia followed suit this year (above), with her simplicity up top and whimsical prints below. How cute is that sheet music!

Now, we've been acquiring quite the collection here at LuLu*s, so just try and resist the printiest platforms of all!

  • Camel Art: Bikaner Camel Festival of Rajasthan, India

Who doesn’t love a festival? The food, the music, the . . . camels? Yes! Welcome to the Bikaner Camel Festival, a two-day festival that takes place every year in Rajasthan, India.

The festival praises the four-legged desert inhabitant with camel parades, camel racing, camel dancing (say what?!) and even contests to judge the best decorated camels.
The best part of the festivities is how decked out these camels get with elaborate saddles, mirrors, flowers, and more! The competition looks fierce!

The local residents take up to three years to master their camel’s fur design, allowing for the hair to grow in so it can be trimmed and styled in intricate patterns. Beautiful. Especially, since it doesn’t hurt the camels!

  • Retro Fox: Brigitte Bardot

Who could be more iconic of the swinging sixties than French model, actress, and singer, Brigitte Bardot? Known for her sexy gap-toothed grin and a bouffant as voluptuous as her body, this French siren was one of the few overseas actresses to be just as well-loved in America as in her native Europe. Today we still lover her beauty, her style, and her photographic legacy.

  • A Rose Down Under: Annabella Barber for Plaza Kvinna

When I first saw this photoshoot, I immediately felt like I was back in the pages of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. Lush flowers and floral prints, winding paths and old gates, delicate lace, old stonework - it's like a grown-up version of my favorite children's fantasy escape.

Photographed by Jaclyn Adams for the Swedish magazine Plaza Kvinna, model Annabella Barber captures all the beauty of warm sunny days and youthful innocence. Styled by Vass Arvanitis with hair by Joe Scandizzo for Eleven Australia and makeup by Julie Provis at Hart&Co.

  • The Fairy Face Palette by PixiGlow

For the young or young at heart, the Fairy Face Palette by PixiGlow is as useful as it is playful. Besides channeling your inner Tinkerbell, the set includes a variety of eye shadows, blush, and lip color ". . . inspired by budding roses, berry nectars and dew at dawn." Sounds good to me!

The eye shadows are definitely my favorite, offering a touch of rosy shimmer that completely avoids the puffy, red-eye look some pink shadows can give you. There are also enough shades to create the ever-popular smoky eye look, and the set includes a mirror large enough to see your entire face. Five shades of lip cream are smooth and glossy, adding a touch of color to brighten the lip, and the overall fold-out case is so whimsical I'm rather charmed by it all. This palette would be a great take-along for any girl who likes a sweet minimal look, and is totally gift-worthy.
  • Pencil Vs. Camera: The Awesome Artwork of Ben Heine

Twenty-eight year old Belgian artist Ben Heine is probably now one of my absolute favorites. Not only is he a brilliant painter and drawer, but his imagination in creating scenes and graphic designs is just so unique. The internet makes many artists a dime a dozen, but Ben's work stands out particularly in my mind. This particular series, known as "Pencil Vs. Camera" was begun in 2010 after writing a letter to his family:

"Reading my letter before putting it in the envelope, I saw in transparency the television behind the paper. I then realized it would be great to make something similar in a single image showing 2 different actions. I went outside and drew 'Pencil Vs. Camera 1' which is very simple and shows 2 chairs with a small table. About 1/4 of the scene is represented on the paper, the other 3/4 happens on the photo."

And that's pretty much how the rest of the pictures in this series are created as well. Each of the papers is done in black and white, while the background is often in color and features vibrant aspects of life - people, animals, scenery, and ideas.

    .
"I just make art for people. I want them to dream and forget their daily troubles. I used to write poems many years ago, I want to convey a poetic and philosophical meaning into my pictures, each new creation should tell a story and generate an intense emotion, like a poem, like a melody."

  • Model Profile: Meet Allie

Meet Allie, the absolutely amazing model from our new lookbook, The Girl & The Sea. She was incredibly genuine and fun to be around, plus super easy to talk to! Below we asked her a few Q's so you could get to know her more. And, as an added bonus, we have some exclusive pics from the lookbook that you can only see on the blog!

    1. What's your sign?
    I'm a full-on LEO.

    2. How did you get into modeling?
I started modeling as a 9 year-old, shooting catalogue for department stores. My mom sacrificed several days a week to drive me to San Francisco and sit through my shoots.

    3. What is your favorite spring trend?
I'm into all the loud graphic prints that are recently popular. I also looove maxis. Super flattering and comfy. :)

    4. I couldn't live without my...
Kickboxing class! I literally look forward to it the whole week, and when the class is cancelled or there is a substitute instructor, it ruins my day.

    5. What do you see as the next "it" thing?
I'm a big fan of cool athletic gear. I love a good track suit, and drop-crotch sweats with high-tops. Right now, most girls are afraid to dress like a guy with street style . . . but I love it, and I think it will catch on.

    6. What's your new favorite item on Lulus.com right now?
As soon as warm weather hits, I stack on the bangles. I love the "Press Play Orange Bangle Set". Orange looks good with everything.

7.What was your favorite part/shot of the recent lookbook shoot?
Easy! My favorite part of the shoot was towards the end of the day, when we were out on the boat, trying to get the shot on the bow . . . the whole boat was rocking back and forth like CRAZY. I was trying to stand up and look amazing, (and not look like I felt as if we were in Antarctica), while struggling to keep my balance and not fall into the water. I ended up falling down 20 times, crashing from one side to the next... but it was hilarious and I laughed the whole time. I like a challenge. ;)

    8. What was your favorite/least favorite thing about being on The City?
Oh man... I have too many answers for this question. My favorite thing about the show was watching the edited episodes. We never had a CLUE how the scenes were actually going to end up after the editors chopped and stirred every reaction and situation. It was always a shock.

My least favorite part would be . . . being portrayed to the world as someone I'm not. It's annoying to be forced to act whiny, sad and upset all the time, when I was actually very happy and having fun. I remember always saying "Aw mannn do I have to act sad again?" "Do we have to fight again?"  "Cant we do a happy, fun scene?" Then the one time I was told we were filming a "fun, girls night out" but the episode was ACTUALLY about a sad, bitter woman confronting me about being too thin. #notcool

    9. Any advice for aspiring models?
Sure, the #1 piece of advice I will give to aspiring models is **you cannot take criticism personally. We get paid to be criticized and judged by anyone and everyone. You have to think of your image like a tool you use to make money. If your agency tells you your skin isn't presentable- go to a dermatologist, do what you need to do to fix it. If you're told you're too skinny or too thick, you CAN'T let it make you depressed. Just realize your image is your tool, and you can't let it get you down. There will ALWAYS be criticism and mean comments out there, but that's part of the job... a BIG part of the job. xx
