Pets in your purse: out. Pets made out of purses, wait.... what?!

Billie Achilleos, "versatile artist & maker of things" (as stated on her blog), was commissioned by Louis Vuitton to create these adorable little critters out of their designer purses, wallets, and accessories to celebrate the fashion house's 100 year anniversary. The collection, named Maroquinaris Zoologicae, is set to kick off a world tour this year, so be on the lookout for a flock of purse birds cruising by your window.

Sticker Madness: The Obliteration Room

Nope, it's not paint.

They're stickers.

And this is what the room looked like before:

Installed for the Queensland Art Gallery, this incredible exhibit, known as The Obliteration Room was created by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama for her Look Now, See Forever exhibition that runs through March. Beginning with a completely white room, Kusama invited children (and kids at heart!) to help "decorate" the space with colorful circle stickers for a period of two weeks.

Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, this incredible 82-year-old Japanese artist is known world-wide for her conceptual art based largely on themes of repetition, pattern, and accumulation. She also holds the female world record for highest selling price for artwork at 5.1 million dollars.

As you can see from the pictures above, her artwork is often very tangible and necessarily autobiographical, and the fact that others help to create it is a very interesting note on the nature of art itself. Plus, it just looks like fun. I mean, who doesn't like stickers?!!

Date Stamp Paintings by Federico Pietrella

I'm a big fan of people who paint on, about, or with unexpected things. So, naturally, Federico Pietrella's date stamp paintings are right up my alley, and I hope you'll agree!

As you get closer...

...and closer...

...you can see that the lines are actually stamped, just like the librarian used to pound into your borrowed copies of Roald Dahl. Incredible!

Moxy Creative House

Behold the awesomeness of minimalism! I wish I could tell you more about Moxy Creative House, but, in the spirit of minimalism (and their site being under construction, to be honest), let's just ogle their awesome series of posters depicting iconic fashions (Dress the Part), eyewear (Framework), and beverages (Mixed Reviews) from movies and music (Ensemble). Very cool.

Prints are available to purchase here, plus there's even more to browse just for the fun of it. Also, this interview with James-Alexander Mathers provides a little insight into the "Ensemble" project.

Guy Laram�e's Book Carvings

Silly me, all these years I've been reading books!

Over the past 30 years, Guy Laramée's resume has accumulated all of this: stage writing, stage directing, contemporary music writing, musical instrument design and building, singing, video, scenography, sculpture, installation, painting and literature. Dayam. So I guess sculpture + literature = awesome book carvings. Works for me. Though, I do have a particular affinity for book mutilation.

Though the artist's statement is all about "the erosion of cultures" and "project(ing) us into this thick Cloud of Unknowing", I like to think of it more as, "Oh the places you'll go!" when you crack open a book. But erosion is nice too....

Still In Love with Unicorns: The Art of Tamar Mogendorff

Ahhhh, there's nothing I love more than discovering an awesome new artist and getting to share them with all of YOU! This week's feature is on a fresh Brooklyn-based textile artist, Tamar Mogendorff, whose work will help you arrive at your intended happy place. From soft bird cages to glitter-horned stag heads, the whimsical nature of this work reiterates that old maxim that "age ain't nothing but a number." (At least that's what my inner-child is saying right now.)

The fashion-based illustrations of Canadian artist, Esther Bayer, are this week's homage to the inevitable (right?) arrival of spring. Taking inspiration from vintage magazine covers and little trifles like ". . . the colors of two lovely soft pink carnations that were sitting on my kitchen table;" how could you not fall in love with the soft colors and keen brushstrokes that are available in print form at her Etsy shop.

Any Scrabble Lovers Out There?

It's no secret that I have a thing for Scrabble. Ever since days-long marathon games in college, I've harbored a secret addiction to this frustrating-yet-brainy game. AND THEN. They invented Words with Friends. Mobile Scrabble I can play whenever I want? Um...yes, please. This game will take over my life! And the world! (Are you pondering what I'm pondering, Pinky?)

In the spirit of promoting nerdiness wherever I go, I decided to see where else these lovable letters have migrated...

to the bed...

...on your sleeves

across your nails...

...a beverage, please!

There's always time...

...to eat a treat

or make a toast...

...to love so sweet!

I am secretly inspired now to go out and make a ton of cool crafty things with Scrabble tiles. When you can pull yourself away from your next WWF move, check out craftster.org for some sweet DIY Scrabble projects you can make at home!

Old School Heroes: The Art of Fab Ciraolo

Ok, I seriously have to share with you this young Chilean artist I just found out about; Fab Ciraolo. Even though he is not a sculptor, this Pop Art illust-rordinare (Ok I just made that up) is able to weld juicy characters from the past with a 1980's-slash-2000's sense of fashion. And all within a floating stellar abyss. ooooh . . .

Perhaps you remember some of Ciraolo's Old School Heroes like Jem, She-Ra and Chetara. NO? That's Ok, the combinations of zippy patterns, washed-out colors and subtle modern details are eye candy for us all.
