  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of Jenloveskev: Georgia O'Keefe

Hi Friends, it's Jen again from Jenloveskev. I hope you are all having a fabulous summer. Today, for our Art Inspired Fashion post, we are going to look at a Georgia O'Keeffe painting.

It's titled "Deer's Skull with Pedernal" and was painted in 1936. I chose this particular painting by Georgia O'Keeffe because I was drawn to the colors and how calm and serene the painting feels.

I was instantly inspired to create an outfit from the painting. I wanted to feel like a traveler; someone out to make their own path. This painting made me want to explore the desert and find neat treasures along the way.

These shorts are super comfortable to walk around in, and the pattern on them is so fun and fashionable – the colors are just beautiful.

This cross shoulder bag is great for collecting all the trinkets you find along your journey!

These Jeffrey Campbell wedges are the perfect exploring shoe. The wedge isn't very high, so they're easy to walk in. The neutral color helps makes your legs look extra long too!

Bonus! Layer it all up with some cool necklaces and lots of bracelets and you're good to go. Whether you are a trailblazer in the city or the desert, this is the perfect summer outfit.

  • Breaking Fashion Rules with Kaelah of Little Chief Honey Bee! Part 1

Hi ladies! Im Kaelah from Little Chief Honeybee! I am over here visiting the LuLu*s blog to break some fashion rules and answer some important fashion questions! Such as, can you really have 'too much of a good thing'? Just curious because I'm the kind of girl who could wear red, pink and ivory every single day of the week and never ever grow tired of it. Maybe it's my affinity for Valentine's Day or just girly hues, but I instantly feel more "me" when I'm donning some pretty pastels!

When you think about those 1980's monochromatic suits or the way the 90's had their way of wearing purple on top of purple on top of purple (only to be paired with… a purple!), you start seeing a trend: Too much of something is never good! Well I'm here to throw caution to the wind and help rewrite some of the old fashion faux-pas rules.

I've never been a matchy-matchy kind of girl. More often than not "my thing" is wearing every pattern conceivable and still trying to pass it off as "acceptable." Instead of going crazy with the florals and the dots and the stripes, I decided to keep it simple for this task: an eye-catching print on the skirt of my Cherry Parfait striped dress, and then everything else I'm wearing is taken directly from that (except that fun necklace!).

My rules may or may not work for you, but why not just give it a shot?! Here's how I (try to) keep from looking like a monochromatic clown:

    1) Make sure you have one statement piece in your ensemble. In this instance I'm working with a fun, bright red dress with a playful pattern of stripes on the bottom. The rest of the dress' torso will undoubtedly scream "Oh hey! Look at me! I'm here!", so make sure you know what is screaming and what is supporting.

    2) Whatever clothing is immediately touching the statement piece should be a toned down version of it. I wanted to keep it fun and playful with this outfit so I opted for a pale pink blazer. This very same hue is found in the skirt of the dress so it works. Yes, a pink blazer is far from "neutral" but it's so toned down in comparison to the bright red that you can get away with it.

    3) If you're going loud with the main piece of your outfit, keep the rest minimal. I opted for an ivory wedge (an even more diluted hue to pink), a red bow in my hair (to draw the eye up), and a turquoise and red necklace just to add a bit of zest!

I think it's important to keep at least one small piece as a "pop" item, such as this necklace. It still has the red in the stone so it ties in, but the blue is so vibrant against the other colors.

It's easy to go straight to a bright red lip for this outfit but I decided to keep it neutral with a natural pink lipstick and I alternated my nails with the bright red and gold! My tattoos tend to do most of the accessorizing for me so they instantly bring more color to the outfit. By wearing a blazer and some tights I was able to tone it down, still look classy, and make it Autumn/Winter appropriate! Feel free to go bare legged or swap the blazer for a vest or cardigan for a more Spring/Summer feel!

This outfit is totally something you could wear to a wedding, girls night out, or a date! The choices are endless! Except maybe bike riding… I tried it and while it worked, I'd maybe switch out those shoes! ;)

  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of Jenloveskev: Henri Matisse

Hey everyone! It's Jen again from Jenloveskev. Here we are with the 2nd installment of our Art Inspired Fashion posts. This month I decided to choose a famous French painter because I am going to Paris next month for a week!! I am so excited. One of my favorite painters is Henri Matisse. He used such beautiful bold colors, and every painting is a joy to look at. That is why I chose this Seville Still Life painting; it is so full of life with all the contrasting patterns.

I didn't want to be so literal with my interpretation, but I did look around for a fancy couch in a red room to take pictures. I guess we are in short supply of those in my neck of the woods. Haha!

Anyway, when I saw this dress I knew it would be perfect. Not only for this painting but for summer as well. I love the floral print and the colors that are used, not to mention how cute the collar is. Isn't it adorable?

I swear the color of this dress is the same color of the background of the painting. I see lots of remixing in our future together!!

  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of jenloveskev

Hi everyone! It's Jen from jenloveskev and I am super excited about this new feature here on the Lulu's blog. I get asked all the time where I get my fashion inspiration and my number one answer is from Art. I think it's fun to look for fashion inspiration in unlikely places. As an art/art history major in college I soaked it up. For this first Fashion from Art post, I chose Joseph Cornell. Joseph Cornell was an American Artist and one of the pioneers of Assemblage art. Assemblage is a three-dimensional composition made from putting together found objects.

This is why I love him so much. I have always been a collector, I LOVE junk. I will find rusty metal on the ground and I pick it up to take home because it looks cool. This has transferred into my style as well. I love mixing patterns, textures and styles. Untitled (The Hotel Eden) is a great example of that. There are different materials and textures all while staying sort of neutral.

I decided this pretty Snickerdoodle Cream Blouse worked great because of the eyelet mixed with the Chiffon fabric and ruffles. It has dimension.

I decided to keep everything neutral in my outfit and add a pop of color with my green socks just like that cute bird.

The added jewelry works so well (especially the necklace) to add a sort of constructed feel to a very feminine outfit.

All in all I think this was a great representation of one of my favorite pieces of art.

    See you next month!

  • Meowsk Reports: Wonderland of a Wardrobe

Brought to you by Shauna at Meowsk!

A few weekends ago, I went to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and ever since have been enamored with the costuming and clever wardrobe changes throughout the film. Designed by Colleen Atwood, the dresses look like something that would show up on fashion runways around the world. I love that they are a modern take on the iconic Alice outfit, with bits of authenticity and bold embellishments.

The original Alice dress. I adore the black detailing along the neckline and skirt hem.

An edgier Alice look with fluttery fabrics and striped ribbons. This dress needs to find its way to my closet ASAP.

A mini dress for a tiny Alice. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a better detail shot of this dress.

Off onto other adventures Alice dress. Love that skirt.

Don't worry if you haven't seen the movie yet; I didn't give everything away. There is still one very special dress that I left out.

Feeling inspired by the previews, I of course had to create
my own Alice outfit which I totally wore to see the film. Have you styled an Alice-inspired outfit? Share it with us, and let me know your favorite costume in the film.
