  • Haruki Murakami Book Covers vs. Street Fashion

They say to never judge a book by its cover, but it's hard not to want to reach for a book with a pretty cover. This is why I've found myself reading much of Haruki Murakami's books. The covers, created by artist John Gall, are inspiring and match up perfectly with the surrealness of each story line, but I never thought the book covers could inspire an outfit!

Fashion blogger Sera Hur paired Murakami covers with a photograph from street style photographer The Sartorialist (a blog you should know about if you don't already). Each outfit is meant to mirror the colors, tones, and mood of each book. Check them out!

    Loving the colors!

Feeling inspired yet? What book covers would you draw style inspiration from?

  • Amy Sedaris: Simple Times

Perhaps you've heard of the mad comedian/crafter Amy Sedaris?

Most famous for her role on Comedy Central's, "Strangers with Candy", Sedaris has brought an edgy yet mysteriously lighthearted air to her craft.

What exactly is her her craft, you might ask?

Well, beyond being a a leading funny girl, Sedaris has begun authoring beautifully spoofy books filled with tacky retro-style pictures. Her newest follow-up to "I Like You" has just been released in time for Xmas!

"Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People" features page after page of almost sickening technicolor photos with Amy pulling out all the stops in crafting ridiculousness. Besides the many project ideas, you will learn to, "create your own craft room and avoid the most common crafting accidents (sawdust fires, feather asphyxia, pine cone lodged in throat)".

    Wow!

Perhaps Amy will teach us to make this fabulous garb!

    Or this handy typewriter!

While Amy may not fit into everyone's craft basket, she carries such an innocent, wholesome way of making fun, you can't help but feel that this nutty crafter has stitched herself a heart of gold!

Are there any other craft/Sedaris fans out there?

  • Savvy Street Style

Some of the best fashion you'll see is right out your front door, modeled on real, everyday people going about their daily lives. One popular website allows regular folk to showcase their creativity and demonstrate the power and innovation of street fashion.

The site to which I am referring is Wardrobe Remix, a street fashion community on Flickr. Here, group members are free to post pictures of their remixed outfits. Pictures must be head to toe shots and must list where each item was purchased. Skirts salvaged from thrift stores, tights from Target, jewelry from boyfriends, and hats found at yard sales are just some of the uniquely obscure items you'll find incorporated into fantastic outfits.

This is a great site to go to if you need a little inspiration for your wardrobe as you will come across some of the most creative people! One such exemplary remixer is Alisha (right), who goes by Roseate Spoonbill on Flickr. Her page documents plenty of adorable retro finds. High-waisted skirts, cute vintage hats, pretty blouses, and unique belts are put together for a sweet vintage look with modern day spunk. Check her out
for inspiration to pay a visit to your local thrift store!

If the thousands of pics on Wardrobe Remix don't satify your craving for street style, check out the book: What I Wore Today: Fashion Remixed Online from Beijing to Berlin (left), which is a published collection of outfits from fashionistas across the globe. Search for it at your local bookstore or at
    Amazon.com.

With a little reexamination of your wardrobe and some creativity, you too can strut your stuff on Wardrobe Remix. Give it a try!
