  • Cheers to Holiday Baking!

Oh, how I love lighting up the Christmas tree and twirling around the kitchen in a pirouette of holiday baking!

Now that I'm no longer a professional baker, I enjoy getting into a slightly-obsessive production mode for the sweet appetites of my co-workers and family members.

The topper is the Orlando family recipe for Cuccidatis, which takes all day to make the seven or eight dozen yield whether you have an enlisted crew to help or not!

These traditional Italian cookies (pictured below) are stuffed with dried fruits, nuts, chocolate and ground orange peel and wrapped in a cookie dough. To grind up the filling we break out Grandma's ancient meat grinder, and the cookies are finished with a lemon icing and sprinkles. (I'm really not sure at what point in the twentieth century the rainbow sprinkles got added, and this has always perplexed me.)

    Does anybody else make these?

My newest favorite is making homemade marshmallows! Last year I made Betty Crocker's Peppermint Marshmallows, and this year I made Vanilla. I think my next experiment will be making Irish Cream marshmallows!

Here's the recipe from Betty Crocker.com

    Butter for greasing
    1/3     cup powdered sugar
    2 1/2     tablespoons unflavored gelatin
    1/2     cup cold water
    1 1/2     cups granulated sugar
    1     cup corn syrup
    1/4     teaspoon salt
    1/2     cup water
    1     teaspoon pure peppermint extract
8     to10 drops red food color

    1. Generously grease bottom and sides of 11x7-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish with butter; dust with 1 tablespoon of the powdered sugar. In bowl of stand mixer, sprinkle gelatin over 1/2 cup cold water to soften; set aside.
    2. In 2-quart saucepan, heat granulated sugar, corn syrup, salt and 1/2 cup water over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Heat to boiling; cook without stirring about 30 minutes to 240°F on candy thermometer or until small amount of mixture dropped into cup of very cold water forms a ball that holds its shape but is pliable; remove from heat.
    3. Slowly pour syrup into softened gelatin while beating on low speed. Increase speed to high; beat 8 to 10 minutes or until mixture is white and has almost tripled in volume. Add peppermint extract; beat on high speed 1 minute. Pour into baking dish, patting lightly with wet hands. Drop food color randomly onto top of marshmallow mixture. Pull table knife through food color to create swirl pattern over top. Let stand uncovered at least 8 hours or overnight.
    4. Dust cutting board with about 1 tablespoon powdered sugar. Place remaining powdered sugar in small bowl. To remove marshmallow mixture, loosen sides from dish and gently lift in one piece onto cutting board. Using sharp knife greased with butter, cut into 1-inch squares (11 rows by 7 rows). Dust bottom and sides of each marshmallow by dipping into bowl of powdered sugar. Store in airtight container at room temperature up to 3 weeks.

Please share your holiday baking ideas with us, or maybe a recipe!

  • New Year Hot Spot Style: Ginza

Not sure about the rest of you fashionistas out there, but right after, "What did you get for Christmas?" the question I'm getting is, "What are you doing for New Years?".

With only four days left, I still have no idea what I will be doing ... but I know what I would like to do! Barring money, travel, and time, here is the first of four awesome New Year's Eve destinations I would love to visit (and the outfits I would love to wear!)

Ginza is an upscale part of Tokyo with luxurious shopping and high fashion everywhere. The flagship stores of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci are always lit up, creating one of the most beautiful city nights I have ever seen. Having been to both, I dare say Ginza is brighter, even, than Times Square.

Class would be the name of my game -- including a midnight toast at the Icebar Tokyo, a bar made entirely of, you guessed it, ice. Everything from walls, the bar, tables, and even glasses are made of ice. A jacket is provided in the Icebar Tokyo, but I would walk in wearing the Little Time Dress and Nekhbey Necklace in Gold [sold out!]. Simple, sophisticated, stylish ... kind of like Ginza itself.

But let's not be square bears -- a splash of color is needed!  Jeffrey Campbell Pacific Teal Leather Double Ruffle Heels it is!

Check back tomorrow for my next New Year's hotspot!

  • Creative Holiday Party Ideas

We all have certain expectations of what will happen at your typical holiday party: sipping eggnog and nibbling on sugar cookies in the shape of Christmas trees, exchanging presents in Secret Santa swaps, enduring annoying questions about your boyfriend from your aunt and grandma. (Well, maybe that's just me.)

Whatever your typical party looks like, I think it's high time we shook up the holiday season with a bit of creativity. A major fan of dressing up, I'm always looking for that next big event to get clever with your look. Why not the holidays?

IDEA #1:  A Mad Men Themed Party

I just love this idea featured on Basket of Kisses, a blog devoted to all things Mad Men. As a work party idea, the Arkansas Advertising Agency, Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods all dressed up as characters from the hit drama. Everyone looks just like their Mad Men counterpart, down to a tee.

I think this party would translate perfectly into a holiday theme. What could be more glamorous than a 60's updo and a high class cocktail? Dibs on Joan! If you love this pic, check out the Mad Men Holiday Card idea on vintage hair and makeup guru, Lauren Rennells's Bobby Pin Blog.

IDEA #2: Ugly Christmas Sweater Party with Family Portraits

The ugly Christmas sweater party idea has been growing in popularity during the holiday season, and believe it or not, I have yet to attend one (hint, hint). It's fairly easy to do if you think about it.

Visit your local thrift store and find the ugliest, cheesiest, most hideous Christmas sweater you can. Some may have smiling reindeer and snowman. Some even have twinkling Christmas lights and tinsel. The more outrageous, the better!

And to top it all off, why not take a fun group photo to send out to all your relatives? I can't help but smile when I look at these two portraits by Seattle-based photographer, John Keatley. Visit his blog to read the funny stories behind them!

Overall, the idea is not classy by a long shot, but hey, we're always dressing up to look better, so why not make yourself look as awkward and dorky as possible. There's definitely some charm to that.

Happy Holidays Lulu*s fans! What cool holiday party ideas do you have?

  • Making a List, Checking it Twice!

Hey Lulu*s fans, the holidays have finally arrived, and all of us here at LuLu*s central are rivaling the productivity of the North Pole, busily working to make sure you have plenty of cute gifts to both give and get this season!

Our jewelry selection is growing each day, and I'm loving the assortment of pocket watch necklaces and lockets to be had. They make the perfect stocking stuffers. Not to mention all the cozy hats, arm warmers and scarves that any girl would love and appreciate on a frosty day.

Just so Santa gets the hint, I'm making my list early this year. Here are my holiday must-haves (so far, anyway):

The Tattler Owl Pocket Watch Necklace [sold out!] was love at first hoot!

Our has Let it Snow Scarf [sold out!] has been selling like wildfire, and no wonder! This thing is so darn soft and lovely. I love the dark grey color here. Perfect for a winter day.

Ok, ok, so it's a little much for a stocking stuffer, but our All the Trimmings Dress in Green [sold out!] will be perfect for that next holiday party.

What's on your list this year?
