So you just moved into a 10' x 20' living space, and you've alotted half of the room to your artwork. . .where does the rest of your life go?
Artist Andrea Zittel was faced with this very predicament years ago as a budding artist in New York. Her solution was to expand her body of work to include an extreme form of space-intensive design based sculptures.
In her 1992 piece titled "A-Z Management and Maintenance Unit, Model 003", you've got shelf space, a small stove, utility sink, and a lofty sleeping pad. Gorgeous!
In a PBS series entitled Art: 21 they say this of the artist: "Zittel’s sculptures and installations transform everything necessary for life—such as eating, sleeping, bathing, and socializing—into artful experiments in living. Blurring the lines between life and art, Zittel’s projects extend to her own home and wardrobe."
In recent years Zittel has started a project called the Smockshop. Guest designers were invited to come and riff on what start as simple dress designs built around the natural shape of fabric: the rectangle. Here are a few examples of some of over 200 designs created and available to view on the site. Designers include Molly Keogh, Tiprin Follett, Michelle Brunnick, and Lulu*s own Claire Fong!
