  • DIY: How to Make a Denim Vest

Old clothes collecting dust in your closet can always be an inspiration for something new. Everyone probably has that treasured old-school denim jacket they never wear but can't seem to toss. Well...turn the old denim jacket into a new edgy denim vest! I recently cut my denim jacket down to a denim vest and I absolutely LOVE wearing it over dresses and tops!

Take the denim jacket and cut the sleeves off directly at the seems of the shoulder to create the rigid vest look. I prefer to leave the denim frayed after the sleeves have been cut for a true look of cut denim.

Although this look is already perfect to throw over a dress or top, you don't have to stop here!! You can bleach the newly cut vest for a more distressed look! It is always a good idea to practice the bleaching process with unwanted denim items to get the hang of how you want to bleach your vest.

The first step is to tightly roll the vest up and rubber-band it like shown below.

Use a ratio of 1/4 bleach and 3/4 water in a plastic tub depending on how much bleach you want to use. Wear gloves and place the rolled up vest in the tub of bleach and water and begin mixing it around.

If you want to go with a light bleach look, put the 1/4 bleach 3/4 water ratio into a spray bottle and spray the rolled up vest. Make sure you are doing this outside where nothing else is getting bleach on it and use gloves.
*FYI: if using black denim, the bleach tends to look like a rusty orange color.

If you don't want a random pattern for your vest, you can lay the vest flat and use a paintbrush to apply the bleach to create patterns like flowers. Put newspaper in the middle of the vest so the bleach does not leak through to the other side. Again, make sure to use gloves!

After bleach has been applied, make sure to rinse your vest within five minutes! Doing this outside is easier so you can use a garden hose. Because you must rinse within five minutes, make sure you know what kind of patterns or amount of bleaching you want to do so you can get it done quick!

The final step is to machine wash the vest alone. Do not machine dry the vest; instead, lay it out to dry. After the wash and dry, you're done and can rock the vest like Kim K., Ashley Tisdale, and Blake Lively do!

Have you ever made your own denim vest? If not, will you try to make one now?

  • New Trend: Denim on Denim

Denim is like the comfort food of clothing. Rare is the girl without a pair of blue jeans in her closet, and no matter what sundress I wear, my blue denim crop jacket always seems like the perfect companion.

But denim on denim was a place I dared not venture. That is, until I saw the trend step stylishly on the Spring 2010 runway.

One trick to pulling off the trend is to mix up the washes and textures. Pair a distressed jean with a crisp jacket or a light, chambray top with dark blue skinnies.

I love the two looks pictured above from Ralph Lauren and D&G. For even more inspiration, check out the street stylin' bloggers below found on Lookbook.nu!

How would you sport the trend?

  • Model Off Duty: Frida Gustavsson

I want to introduce you to one of my favorite up-and-coming models: Frida Gustavsson. This 17-year-old, 5’11” Stockholm native is a self-proclaimed geek, but is a natural on both the runway and on film. In January, she walked for Valentino, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior, and Chanel in spring couture shows in Paris.

Frida is not only a force on the runway, but also off. Below are some example of her laid back, but chic, style.

  • Trend to Try: Jean Shorts + Tights

With spring fast approaching, shorty shorts are hitting the shelves left and right. I put on a pair the other day and decided it was still too breezy outside and by far too early to be showing so much pale winter skin.

That's when I was inspired to pair my favorite black opaque tights with last summer's denim shorts.

The combination is so wonderfully simple. What better way to safely transition from chilly winter weather to fresh and sunny spring mornings?

The expert bloggers pictured here have mastered the whole jean short/tight pairing. I love it best with cut-off shorts or those with a cuffed hem. Paired with a loose top and a crisp blazer or crop jacket, the look is perfectly pulled together.

For footwear, try ankle booties or flats. Also, the addition of a long, chunky necklace adds the perfect finishing touch.

  • Baby It's Cold Outside

After all the holiday cheer has passed and January's bitter cold sets in, we fabulous and stylish girls may find ourselves in need of some extra layers to keep us insulated from the chills that convince us to stay in bed with the covers pulled over our heads.

For me, winter used to be a long, dreary season during which I didn't really care about what I wore. My old college sweatshirt, go-to blue jeans, and a humongous, unflattering old coat would do just fine.

What I know now is that layering a winter outfit is an art in itself. An art that, once mastered, can have you looking quite put together and weather-appropriate whether you're going to work, school or running a couple of errands.

My new favorite blog to visit for fashion tips is The Freelancer's Fashionblog. This vintage lovin' lady, (whose drawing is featured above), teaches the art of layering in her newest post, "The Anatomy of Dressing When It's Really Really Cold."

I love the use of the word "Anatomy," because that's really how technical layering can be. The Freelancer's Fashionblog advises to use buildable layers of warm knits, wool and handy accessories to not only keep you looking cozy but cute. I've already borrowed some of her tips to help me out on my teeth chattering passage to work.

Accessories are my favorite part of the layering process. A hat like the Sunny Disposition Cap in Black [sold out!] will help keep your body heat from escaping. We pretty much all own this hat at the office and wear it every day, so it works!

I love layering my Argyle Addict Knee High Socks under my long john pants and skinny jeans. They go great under boots too. Last but not least, my most recent find are the High Five Arm Warmers in Purple [sold out!], which allow my hands to defrost and get typing happily again. Yay!!

  • Fashion in Flight

Ahhhh, the holidays. 'Tis the season for families to reunite and exchange hugs and gifts. Long-lost sons and daughters will be returning home from college or out of town to enjoy a much appreciated home-cooked meal. This may be you, and this may mean you'll be hopping on a plane in the weeks to come.

    But what to wear?

The dress code for flying has changed over the years. Flying was once a special occasion that required formal attire. But with the stress of holiday travel, airport security, flight delays and cramped cabin seating, those high heels and nylons may loose their appeal when you start to blister and itch.

Courtesy of People Stylewatch, we've got some great pics of celebs who, though having to travel frequently, manage to maintain their star quality and style when everything's up in the air.

Above, I like how Ashlee Simpson's look is so basic yet still a statement by topping it all off with a chic hat. Meanwhile, New Moon cutie Ashley Greene pairs an elegant faux fur jacket with skinny blue jeans for a warm and casual look. Rihanna keeps her cool with a stylin' black cap and funky work boots.

Taking hints from all these styles, my most put-together outfit for air travel would have to be: an oversized top, like the Euclidean Space Top by Brandy Melville [sold out!], skinny Kill City Jeans with stylish detailing, and a cute ladies fedora to top it all off. All this paired with shades will have you fightin' off the paparazzi like a star.

Now if you want to take flight the old-fashioned way, just take a look at Mad Men star John Hamm and burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese. These two take the cake when it comes to style. Go them!

  • Star Style: Confidence Skinny Pant

The trend that has taken the fashion world by storm, the skinny jean is here to stay.

    Jessica Alba wearing skinny jeans

Ultra skinny jeans are everywhere and on everyone, including stars like Jessica Alba, who has been spotted wearing her favorite Divine Rights of Denim Confidence Skinny Pant around town on several occasions. The skinniest of skinny jeans, you can now find this hot item at Lulus.com in sleek inky blue!

Perfect with flats and a cute flowy blouse, skinny jeans can pull a chic outfit together in a snap. A trend that we will continue to see through fall and winter, you can count on pairing your favorite skinny jeans with knee high boots and a warm peacoat for hot look in cold weather.
