  • Friday Style ICON: Iris Apfel

When I was living in NYC, I happened upon an exhibit featuring an eccentric fashion icon named Iris ApfelThe exhibit was called Rare Bird, a title that only begins to describe the collection of clothes that were on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

I became enamored with Iris -- along with half of New York City, I presume -- and was recently thinking back on the experience with awe. Then the other day, I found this GREAT video of Iris being interviewed and filmed while shopping.

My favorite thing about Iris Apfel is that she views fashion with so much energy and shows no fear in doing what she wants with it!

  • The DOLLHOUSE on Steep Street!

Lately I've been trying to keep posted on the people that I have done blogs on. One person that I have succeeded, at least a little, in keeping updated on is a graphic designer, artist, and photographer named Kelty, who has a website called Steep Street. I did the first blog in August on Kelty's website and then did another follow up blog on a photo shoot that she styled in vintage clothes

This week, I remembered to remind myself to check up on Kelty and was really glad that I did. I found myself enamored with her most recent blog post. The newest photos that she has posted are such an awesome inspiration for fashion, styling, makeup, and photography that I had to do another post!

All of the makeup done in these shots was done by the makeup artist Nadia, who has just launched a website and a blog, which include drawings of her ideas for this photo shoot!

Obviously, it's fun to see the final product, but I also enjoy seeing the thought and process behind a project. This one turned out so well that I really enjoyed seeing the concept and drawings of the makeup (below).

  • Model Profile: Kyndrah!!

This week I am introducing our model KYNDRAH!

I realized that I should start doing Lulus.com employee profiles since we are all so dang cool. I already did one on Serine when she moved to London, so I thought I'd keep going with the models first.

So here is Kyndrah. She's one stylish chica and always wears LuLu*s clothes. Even in the cold, this girl has managed to look cute day in and out.

Check her out below, wearing her own jacket, cardigan, and knitted scarf (it had these really cool feathers knitted into it!), sunglasses, and Ugg boots paired with our newest Yoko Striped Tank by Alternative Apparel and the Beaten Path Skinny Machine Jean!

Below are a few fun pictures of Kyndrah in the studio, when I was shooting some of the clothes that I did this year with photographer Daniel De Porres. I love the one of her jumping. She literally walked into the studio and it took us 5 minutes to get these shots!

Here is Kyndrah modeling for me at a small fashion show I threw. She's so much fun and brings a lot of life to the clothes!

  • Love Conquers All : Omnia Vincit Amor

There are many new and hot figures flirting with the cameras about town in NYC these days, but there is one in particular that has caught my attention again and again. I have to admit, he was the only Sikh man in all of the "who's who" party pictures on Style.com, and he was in sooooo many of them that I couldn't help wondering who he was.

His name is Waris Ahluwalia, of the House of Waris jewelry company. Waris jewelry could charm almost anyone, gleaming with precious gems and whimisical fantasy. In order to keep up such a business, Waris can be seen working around the clock to keep on the cutting edge of the world of the socialites.

Not only is Waris an amazing jewelry designer, he is also an actor. Waris premiers in the Darjeeling Limited as the train conductor but is also in The Life Aquatic. I LOVE Wes Anderson movies, so this was awesome to find out!

Here, below and to the left, are Waris' earrings. On the right, here's a LuLu*s necklace [sold out!] that is reminiscent of his style and use of gemstones (although our necklace does not actually have real gemstones in it).

  • Unicorn Heel Banannnnnnnnza & Lulu's FAVORITE DJ Mia Moretti!

Sooooo a few weeks back, DJ Mia Moretti picked out some shoes on Lulus.com, and they just so happened to be the Jeffrey Campbell Inches Black Ringed Unicorn Heel Bootie. (I know, it's a tongue twister, but they're cute all the same!) Mia wore these shoes out and about last week in New York City, and we found these pics.

Here, Mia is at the Paper's Fifth Annual Nightlife Awards in LuLu*s shoes with the oh so fashionable Josh Madden!

And here is another adorable pic of her in the JC shoes at the annual holiday Toys For Tots fundraiser where she was DJing!!

Check out all of our unicorn heels from our favorite shoe designer, Jeffrey Campbell!

From left to right: JC Inches Black Ringed Unicorn Heels, the JC Quarry Black Ruffled Unicorn Heeled Boot, and the JC Michelle Ruffle Unicorn Heel in Gold, Pewter [sold out!], and Black Suede [sold out!]!

  • Ladies We Love: Zooey Deschanel

Women everywhere may find themselves developing an unavoidable girl-crush on actress and singer Zooey Deschanel. Maybe it's her curious blue eyes, quirky sense of humor, or her unique and individual style, but not only is Zooey a star women love to love, but a style icon of her own making.

Zooey's style doesn't seem to follow any specific fashion trend but that of her own whim. It manages to be at once playfully tomboy and feminine all at the same time. Zooey never shies away from wearing girly accessories, sporting a bow or flower in her hair and pulling it off effortlessly without looking too dainty. The difference is having confidence and a sense of adventure when it comes to putting together an outfit.

To get her look, experiment with flashes of bold color by tying a piece of bright red or blue ribbon in your hair. Don a vintage-inspired locket or statement hat. Balance the color and flair with subtle touches elsewhere, and don't be afraid to stand out.

Perhaps what's most essential to Zooey's style is a wink and a smile. You can just tell she's having fun and loving life. Now that's a fashion trend to follow. :)

  • News From MILAN by Megan Jones

    MILANO:

This past week, I attended a private viewing of East London Boys, the latest exhibit by hot new photographer Jacopo J Moschin. At only 22 years old, he has had a lot of success here in Milan.

His latest exhibit was focused on the contemporary masculine image. The photographs portrayed the youth that has been influenced by “cultural creativity and originality.” I was lucky enough to have a chat with him and ask him a few questions about his work!

So how long have you been doing photography professionally?

I would say about two and a half years. I’m new to the scene, but then again I am also very young.

I think the subject matter is very interesting. What would you say influenced you more: the different fashions of men’s clothes, or the attitude and personalities of the “London Boys”?

Well, what I found interesting was, if we look at the 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s punks and rockers they had their set styles. But these aren’t necessarily punks, they can look like this one day and can look totally different the next, I wanted to capture that.

It was an interesting show; the portraits gave an aura of wonder, as if you really wanted to get to know the subject’s story. And for anyone interested in men’s fashions, this was a perfect display of new trends.

Personally, I think he is right on the money with the theory that today’s men have this opportunity to express themselves though fashion, but not let this expression define them (as it once did). Moschin also admitted that he prefers working with real film, even though it might be pricey, he would rather spend the money than work digital.

Aside from this new and exciting work, he has had a lot of previous experience in fashion photography. If you want to see more from Jacopo J Moschin, you should check out his website. He is also featured as the cover story in H Magazine, Issue 107.

    Ciao,
    Baci

  • The Brilliance of Bright Star

I had the pleasure of watching the lovely film Bright Star earlier this week and was simply floored by the beauty of the costumes.

The film gives life to the passionate romance between romantic poet John Keats and his lover and muse, Fanny Brawne. Both played their roles seamlessly and wore their period-piece costumes just as well.

I loved, loved, loved every dress Fanny wore. Her character was quite the fashionista of her time, and you can see this manifested through her lavish outfits, which embrace ruffles, flowers, feathers and other flourishes.

This movie is the perfect Thanksgiving break indulgence.

  • LuLu*s on That Morning Show on E!

For those of you who are acquainted with a little channel called E! Entertainment, you'll want to tune in every morning from 6 to 9 a.m. to spot some cute LuLu*s merchandise on the cast of That Morning Show. This fun and upbeat news program is just lovin' our dresses, and don't they wear them well?!

Pictured above (from left to right) is our Spectacle Dress in Grey [sold out!] and our Hilton Dress in Grey [sold out!]. Below is our As You Like It Dress (left) and our Fifth Avenue Dress in Brown (right).

We had the pleasure of chatting with the show's talented stylist, Lauren Valentine, about the life of a stylist and how she got into the biz.

How did you get started as a stylist?

I met a big time director who gave me the "in", and then I worked my butt off on my first film, Reservation Road, to prove to everyone that they needed me in this industry.

How is working behind the scenes at That Morning Show? It looks like you guys have a lot of fun.

It is fantastic! Mark Long is one of my favorite people. He is always making jokes and keeping things light.

What are your favorite aspects of the job? Any challenges?

I love being able to be creative with my job, and I love how versatile it is. Dressing nine people, with all different ideas and styles, does prove to be challenging at times, but is also so rewarding and worth it.

Do you try to have your wardrobe keep up with current fashion trends?

Of course. I am having a lot of fun with boyfriend blazers and the big chunky stilettos that are out there right now.

    Any costuming disasters or bloopers?

Yes! The other day, Chelsea’s skirt ripped in the middle of the show, but we just had to get creative and fake it the rest of the way through.

    Describe your favorite outfit.

Right now, I would have to say a super sequenced top with a boyfriend blazer, a pair of pegged skinny jeans and a colossal heel.

What would you recommend for an aspiring stylist?

Stay at it. It is a long, tough road, but it sure beats the 9 to 5 if you have a passion for fashion.

    Favorite item from Lulus.com?

The Brat Pack Jacket in Blue [sold out!] is a must-have this season!

  • Grey Skies in Your Closet?

My friend Daniel ... or rather my photographer friend of new ... has, this year, introduced me to a photographer, graphic designer and vintage-inspired fashionista extraordinaire named Kelty. I did a profile on her when I first started blogging for Lulus.com.

However, since then, Kelty's work has only gotten better and better and, yes, awesome. Her website, Steep Street Photography, is fun, bright and filled with visual goodies. Daniel recently posted a link to Kelty's blog which had this post about how she put some outfits together.

Here are some of Kelty's new outfits with her commentary and instructions:

"Here's the simple recipe: 1 silk sleeveless dress, 1 poofy underskirt, 1 blouse, 1 vest, 1 belt, 1 pair of tights, 1 pair of suede heels, 1 silk scarf, 2 brooches, a pair of vintage frames and a mishmash of bangles, earrings and necklaces. I encourage you all to remix, reimagine, and reconstruct your own closet accordingly."

"We embraced a fun blend of colors and patterns that resulted in an interesting four faces of Hannah (the model and Kelty's sister) ... part Ugly Betty, part Grandma, part Nerdy Librarian, and a little Runway Diva all patchworked together. Each one makes me giggle."
