  • High Spirits: The Photography of Brooke Shaden

Ever wonder what it's like to be an artist?
Today we have a behind-the-scenes interview with a fashionable artist:  Brooke Shaden!

    1. So, you were raised in PA, what brought you to LA?
I graduated from college in Philadelphia in December 2008 and decided then to pick up my still camera. I went about creating self portraits, and soon after moved to Los Angeles to pursue film making. It wasn't long after the move that I decided to do photography instead of film making, and have been living in LA ever since creating art!

    2. Where do you get inspiration for some of the looks in your photos?

I am constantly inspired by timeless wardrobes. I love something that looks like it could be from any time period and helps to tell a story. I am inspired by long flowing gowns and the way that wind catches in fabric.

    3. What's your favorite time period?
I love the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood of painters, they inspire me so much!

    4. Do you have an amazing dress and prop collection?
I like to think so! Though, admittedly, I have ruined most of them by dragging them through the mud or slopping them around in creeks. I have probably 20 or so dresses that I use on photo shoots and take with me to workshops, all of various styles but all of them timeless as well.

    5. What is your fascination with water?
Aside from my name being Brooke . . . I am fascinated with the way that water is a foreign element for the most part. We as humans are not naturally water creatures, and so water seems to be a place where a new world can easily be formed. I like how fluid it is, the way that it can softly pour over skin and hide body parts that are in the water. It has so many meanings associated with it, like life and death.

    6. How long does it take you to prepare for a shoot?
I spend at least a few hours per photo conceptualizing and planning all of the details. I always know what I am going to shoot before I pick up my camera, so half of my entire process is spent planning while the shooting takes about 10 minutes.

    7. What do you splurge on for your photo shoots?
Usually my big splurges come from props! I recently purchased a giant octopus for a photo, something that I had been wanting for a very long time but never had the guts to buy. I will splurge on a dress if I think it can be versatile enough, too.

    8. One thing that is very unique about your photography is that you use solely a square format. Why the square?

To me, the square format allows for the viewer to see into a whole new world instead of a photograph. Suddenly the traditional photographic frame is gone, and instead of focusing on the medium the concept can shine through even brighter.

    9. You also have a background in film and English, do you still write or film?
I have not yet jumped back into film, but I know that I will someday. I don't feel that it is right quite yet because I don't have the means to properly translate my ideas. I am infatuated with photography still, but I am sure that sometime, maybe soon, I will get the itch to make my images move. As for writing, I keep my blog updated very regularly with essays and musings. I love writing about photography and philosophies on photography. I am also writing a book which I hope to publish in 2012 all about inspiration and creating new worlds.

    10. Tell us about your upcoming workshop in New York.
My workshops for the fall are numerous, as I will be teaching in New York, Los Angeles, Florida and Texas. The New York workshop is an 8 hour day full of hands on shooting and editing a levitation photograph. Each workshopper leaves with their own creation from the day. I go through my process, start to finish, on how to shoot and edit a levitation image. I teach how to make people fly!

  • Blogger Spotlight: Liz of Late Afternoon

Welcome to another round of Blogger Spotlight! Liz of Late Afternoon is one of my favorote spots to head over to when I am in need of some fashion inspiration! Mixing flowing skirts and tailored separates is just one of her many talents, in addition to always having fantastic hair and makeup to accompany her many fabulous outfits. Take a look below for some of my favorite photos of Liz!

I love this pairing of neautrals and a denim top! So chic and simple with perfect proportions.

Tailored and sleek red pants demand your full attention while a black and white striped top provide a graphic element to offset the bright hue!

I love this playful ensemble Liz wore to Disney Land. It is almost Fairy-esque and topped off with super fun sequined mouse ears this outfit is definitely smile-worthy.

Great example of layering and use of color and pattern.

Worn at this weeks Magic Convention, Liz stands out in playful polka dots and a girly-cute skirt!

My personal favorite of this group of photos, this vintage inspired pattern is perfectly played up with a bright turquoise clutch and amazing peach sunglasses.

Amazing stripes and a boater hat are perfect for a day at the marina!

Perfect 60's style jacket tops off a jodhpur pant and desert boots!

  • Vintage Model: Chelsea Turnbo

Lulu*s is happy to indroduce one of its lovely vintage models, Chelsea Turnbo.
Hailing from the sunny city of Los Angeles, Chelsea kindly dished about her experiences as a model!

    1. Tell us a little about your modeling career path?

I was first discovered by Elite modeling agency in New York. They wanted to sign me but couldn't because I was too young and lived in Arkansas at the time. So they had me transferred to Atlanta Elite modeling agency where I started spending my summers modeling at the age of 13. My grandparents lived in Atlanta, so it made it easy for me to work out there.

When I turned 16, I graduated high school and went overseas to Asia where I did runway shows for many brands including Calvin Klein. I did a lot of print ads, and at one point, I was in pretty much every magazine on the stands. I continued to grace magazine covers, dabbled in some lingerie campaigns and continued to grow my portfolio. When I was confident with my portfolio and where my career was going, I moved to Europe. I loved Europe, and I had so much fun there. After a while though, I began to miss the States and decided to move out to Los Angeles and have been living here since.

    2. What is life like as a model living in L.A?
It's totally different. It's more commercials instead of high fashion. It's a lot of fun though.

    3. What is the best part of being a model?
    The traveling!!!

    4. What do your daily activities consist of?
For the most part it's mainly working out and going to castings.

(photos above curtesy of Fashion Model Directory)

    5. What do you do for fun in L.A?
I go out sometimes like every normal 21 year old. I love shopping in L.A. It has everything! I also love going to the movies, Runyon Park and the beach.

    6. Do you have a lot of free time or are you pretty busy?
I stay pretty busy, but every now and then I have some down time.

    7. Do you have any favorite photographers?
Honestly, right now I would say Richard Bernardin. I love his vintage photos! He is able to find a certain type of beauty in every person he shoots.

  • Animatronic love + Black Eyed Peas = ???

Lady Gaga nailed the robotic look in her Bad Romance video, with the help of Alexander McQueen of course, but now lets take a look at what the Black Eyed Peas attempted with the same style.

In their Imma Be Rockin That Body music video Fergie sports super futuristic cyber costumes that don't quite cut it in my book. I personally think they look a little too contrived. However, I do kind of like the way the video is a made like a feature film, and I particularly enjoy the gigantic robots landing outside in the L.A. desert and attacking them.

My sister, who considers herself an expert at all things Gaga and robotic, said this about the video above:

    "I've noticed a few things:

ONE: Lady Gaga's animatronic style is more than infectious.

TWO: I can't stand the way the Black Eyed Peas have turned the Gaga/McQueen influenced outfits into cheaper versions. I'll take Lady Gaga any day over their new video Imma Be Rockin That Body."

    What do you think?

  • Lulu's La La Loves Didi Benami!

    Fan of American Idol?

    I thought so.

This image of Didi Benami from last Tuesday night's performance probably looks familiar to you, then. Her breathtaking performance of Stevie Nicks' classic hit "Rhiannon" won her a place in the show's top twelve last night!

This charming young woman from Knoxville, Tennessee has a voice as soft as velvet, and as sweet as strawberry ice cream! She's captured us with her super-femme indie styling reminiscent of Duffy or Feist.

Here at Lulu*s, we couldn't help but notice her impeccable fashion sense! This rosy-cheeked  Boho-Babe showed up on stage with soft curls, and none other than the ultra-popular La La Love Dress in Coral! [sold out!] This whimsical gal chose to go with the high-belted look, with matching boots. (Not to mention an acoustic guitar, and what could be sexier than that?).

Check out this video of her vote-winning performance:

     Any Didi fans out there?
I have to say she's one of my favorites out of all of the girls, and I'm curious to see what she comes up with next week!!
    Last nights cuts were grueling!!!
    Who did you vote for?

  • Kristin Knuaff: PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF

    Kristin Knauff Reports from L.A.:

PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF WE L.A. (LOVE ART) – JANUARY 22-23 AT THE MONTALBAN THEATER

Kristen Knauff just sent us exclusive pictures from a pretty sweet sounding Paper Magazine event in Los Angeles. Paper Magazine is one of my personal favorite publications (ever since I got stuck in their elevator as an art student in NYC) and they seem to be throwing some of the coolest parties this year.

This event was a three-part series focused on bringing together emerging artists, art, musicians and students in an interactive experience. The WE LOVE ART party was catered towards making ongoing and interactive art installations focused on audience participation. A large studio was open for high school and college-aged students to get creative who attended the event.

Live music performances during this experiences included: Samuel Stewart, son of Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart and Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey, and the CobraSnake, celebrated local DJ and event photographer. DJ Ana Calderon from the indie label Dim Mak set the mood. Popular DJs Skeet Skeet and TOKiMONSTA will be spinning and live performances by headliners Best Coast, and Dum Dum Girls kept people movin!

Girls were wearing their brights out to this event! Layered lace and lots of neon were a big fashion must-have for this party.

Artists in attendance included Karen Kimmel, Confetti System, Damion Silver, Scott Patt, Darren Romanelli, Telefantasy Studios... and many more...

One of the exhibitions was Karen Kimmel’s “Art of Exchange” stencil workshop; an ongoing series that encourages people of all ages to make their own creative mark. A dance class was taught by Ryan Heffington called Sweaty Sunday's and included artists, photographers, fashion designers, and screenwriters wearing their best Lycra and bright pastel outfits for a dance-off to indie rock, techno, and 1980s new wave hits. Ryan Heffington is a choreographer, performance artist, and designer.

Featured throughout the course of the two days will be a series of 24 short films, created by Converse, that shine a light on unknown artists from around the globe. Sharing a common thread of passion for their work, the films show the artists at work, conveying personal stories that show their creative process and inspiration. Each film ends with a call to action that challenges the user to find their path to creativity.
