Lulus Fashion Lounge - Blog - A La Mode

  • Noah Does Frida

This Frida Kahlo-inspired shoot shows off the young Dutch model, Noah Steenbruggen, like never before. Her darkened eyebrows add a new dimension to flashbulb-whitened skin, while the colorful frocks, fringe and floral crowns pop against a sensual Spanish backdrop. I'm in love with the carefree foreign style channeled to life by stylist Patrycja Juraszcyk and photographed by Anouk Nitsche.

  • Model Pick of the Week: Utterly Irresistible Strapless Ivory Dress

Here at Lulus.com we love to let you in behind-the-scenes. This week I decided to talk to our lovely model, Alyssa, to find out her favorite new item. Naturally, Alyssa picked the Utterly Irresistible Strapless Dress. Besides the fact that the lace design is flattering and not over-the-top, Alyssa loves the snug fit and the strapless silhouette. Lookin' good Alyssa!

  • Karli Kloss for Numero #127

Karli Kloss gets vamped posing for the camera of Tom Munro in bold winter hues, black cherry lipstick and a smoky eye so intense the fire department showed up. A boyish coif balances the feminine textures of fishnets and fuzzy jackets and the sensibility of stylist Charles Varenne seems remarkably accessible to the everyday fashionista.

  • Paris Fashion Week Fall 2011: Alexander McQueen

Who wouldn't want to be a bondage queen in a priceless dress? Not sure I would even if I could afford it, but it's an interesting thought.

Fall 2011 has not yielded the best of collections from many designers and I'd go as far as saying that some of the shows bored me, not to death, but pretty close. However, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQuen (Alexander McQueen's replacement) has kept his legacy alive quite easily, despite what the skeptics have said.

The impossible task of replacing McQueen has been overcome by Burton's steady and assuring feminine influence to the brand. And although this collection did not WOW me away, it did reassure me that McQueen's legacy is not even close to dying.

To say that the dress above was intricate would be an understatement when used to describe the layers of lavender chiffon used.

Here, the pieces of the bodice and on the shoes recall the puzzling way that mosaic pieces fit together. This also reminds me of Spain in the summer time! Or is that a stretch?

I have to admit I don't think mideaval times could get more chic than this.

What do you think of Sarah Burton's work as Alexander McQueen's replacement?

  • Close Up: It's All in The Details for The Full Spectrum Lookbook

Last week we launched the Full Spectrum Lookbook, our hottest and brightest yet

Now, lets get closer for a bit of insight on how we came up with this look.

For the makeup, we were greatly inspired by the beauty shots at Marc Jacob's Spring 2011 Ready-To-Wear show. At a first glance we thought it was just a really good smokey eye. However, after a second look we discovered that it was the use of a green shadow within the smokey eye that was doing all the tricks.

To create our own look, similar to this, our makeup artist went a bit lighter on the eyes by playing up the reflective qualities in the eye shadow. She also decided to go brighter in the lips, with a fuchsia infused plum color. Remember as well, that for full lashes any of the false eye lashes at your local drugstore will work wonder in seconds!

Here are a few extra close up shots of the adorable clutches from the lookbook. I couldn't resist highlighting these for you guys because they are a few of my favorites on LuLu*s right now. Notice how intricate and unique the hardware is on these purses, something that you don't find on just any ol' purse!

Hint styling tip for accessories: if you have a plain dress then play it up with a colorful handbag, or if you have a crazy printed dress play it up with a nude clutch.

On the left is the Live It Up Blue Purse and on the right is the Round the Clock Beige Purse.

See, it wasn't that hard to turn a runway look into a fantastic going out look!

What are your favortie dramatic makeup effects?

  • Milan Fashion Week Fall 2011: Dsquared² Channels True Grit on the Runway

If you've been dreaming of cowboys and the great West since seeing True Grit then Dean and Dan of Dsquared² are about to make your day!

Dsquared² won me over at Milan fashion week with this tribute to American pioneers and more likely, Hailee Steinfeld's role in the latest Western, True Grit.

Although not breathtakingly beautiful, or feminine, the catchy part of this collection is that it is simply wearable. Take away the bulky layering and the pieces are totally practical. Expect menswear inspired layering for fall 2011 in a big way, and get yourself a great oversized and floppy hat ASAP.

Arizona Muse opened the show wearing an adorable deep-blush colored leather jacket paired with brown gloves, a black floppy hat, killer-pieced jeans, a studded belt, and a pair of white lace up boots.

To end the show Dean and Dan used their signature move by doing yet another take on a women's version of a tuxedo. This time however, it was a maxi dress version of a tux from the olden days complete with a black bow tie.

  • Behind the Scenes: LuLu*s Spring 2011 Gypsy Caravan Lookbook

Last week, we launched our spring 2011 lookbook, Gypsy Caravan, and I thought it was about time to give you all a peek from the other side of the lens at one of our shoots.

Below is the behind the scenes video featuring Forget That You’re Young, the new single from The Raveonettes' forthcoming Raven In the Grave.

In addition to the video, I also wanted to give you some photographic treats. On every shoot, I bring some of my own cameras to take pictures not only for my own personal benefit, but for you ladies as well. This time I brought my new Fuji-roid, the Instanx 210, and the pictures that came out were amazing -- take a look!

This is a location that is very close to the LuLu*s warehouse! Isn't Chico, California, beautiful?

  • Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 Couture: Christian Dior

The doors have opened for Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 Couture season and we're already swooning with excitement. So far, from what I have seen at my desk on Style.com, Galliano has struck a goldmine with his collection for Christian Dior.

The collection looks back to the "New Look" and upholds a lady like demeanor fit for a queen. The models seem to be statues of socialite elegance strutting down the runway in the fullest skirts ever seen and wrapped in gowns containing enough fabric for all of Paris to fit under.

The color story isn't too sophisticated and if it weren't for the pale blue that seems to have been misted over some of the garments I would even venture to say that it was quite boring!

What seems to hold this collection together is the stoic and timeless elegance of the "Dior" woman. Galiano knows who his customers are and this collection will offer them some great red carpet, gala worthy pieces to choose from.

  • Fashion Collaboration: The Alien Invasion of Lily Donaldson

An invasion of alien beauty bombarded my fashion world last week when this fashion editorial came to me through Fashion Gone Rogue. Don't fear, this is a peaceful invasion of a stoic super model, Lily Donaldson, caught by photographer Sølve Sundsbø.

It's almost as if she's on another planet with her serene poses and calm reassuring attitude.

An updo can look old and tried but here it looks new and modern. The reflection of the light off of Donaldson's hair and the contrast of the shadows in the folds of the garment create highlight every detail in the clothing and on the model.

Here Lily Donaldson looks like a sand mermaid, apparently a new type of creature that sparkles while basking in the sun of the dunes.

Oh how I love this shot! I know the pants are bizarre, but they utilized them to pose her in JUST the right way!

Sundsbø captured these wonderful silhouettes of brilliantly constructed garments, styled to perfection by George Cortina, for November 2008 Vogue Nippon.

  • W Magazine's Fashion On Film Festival

I have always been an avid fashion editorial follower and have been rejoicing ever since they've become easier and easier to track down. However, in the mean time I have been waiting patiently for an online forum which features fashion films, not just editorials. Essentially, what I wanted was a Fashion Youtube, and I have found just that.

W Magazine has come to my rescue and granted my wish by dedicating an entire part of their site to Fashion On Film

After watching a few of the films featured on their site, I have fallen in love with the short fashion film. The film is Modelgeddon, uploaded to W Magazine for their Fashion On Film Festival which was guest curated by Hervé Mikaeloff. Modelgeddon was created for LOVE Magazine as a collaboration between director James Lima and Donatella Versace. The short film features supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana Beatriz Barros, Claudia Mason and Julie Ordon as actual superheros.

     Happy Fashion On Film watching!!
