  • Film to Fashion: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

As my fellow cinephiles out there can attest, some classic films have a magic about them that make you feel like you're right there in it, watching history change before your very eyes. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, filmed waaay back  in 1919, was at the forefront of the German Expressionist movement, and the most classic of all classic horror fiilms (yes, even before Nosferatu!). Madmen, murder, sleepwalkers, and silent screams . . . Oh yes, it's silent, which always takes a little getting used to for us modern viewers, but the striking, abstract visuals are more than enough to keep you hooked.

With something so stylized, my mind automatically shifts from highly stylized... to highly stylish! How can I wear this?! So how about working some Caligari-inspired pieces into your wardrobe? Abstract prints, sharp angles, and geometric shapes channel the silent classic, while injecting some sharp chicness into these dramatic looks!

  • On the Road Movie Trailer

So, what do you get when you combine Jack Kerouac's classic novel, On the Road, with the hunky star of Tron: Legacy and Country Strong, Garrett Hedlund? Basically a film I've been pouring over for two years straight!

It was almost a year ago I found about this heavenly collaboration, and while the filming had been complete, there was no release date. Now, just to wet our appetites, the official movie trailer is out, and the film is somewhat elusively scheduled to be in theaters "late 2012".

Check out the trailer and tell me you're not as excited as I am!

  • Dream World: Costume Design by Eiko Ishioka

As a visual artist whose career spans several fields, Eiko Ishioka has created some of the most remarkable costumes of our time. Ishioka’s long list of credits includes an Academy Award in Costume Design for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, designs for the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and the costume design for the opening ceremony for 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She even designed costumes for Grace Jones and directed Bjork’s Cocoon video

What Ishioka is best known for are her many contributions to movies, including the recently released Mirror Mirror. Unfortunately, Ishioka recently passed away in January, but her fantastic work continues to live on through film. So let’s take a look at some of her best moments on the big screen.

Mirror Mirror just hit movie theaters and the costumes are spectacular and over the top. All things we love about Ishioka!

The Fall is definitely one of the most visually stunning movies—with a great story to boot! The headdresses are my favorite.

Eiko Ishioka really made herself known as the queen of dark costumes when she lent her work to Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'.

The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, would not have looked as amazing as it did without Ishioka. The headpiece resembled a cross between a rigid neck brace and a forbidding bird cage.

  • Site to See: Kid Casting

Oh, Kid Casting. Just another reason to love the internet.

Why? Because as founder Dave Shumka writes, "You know when a movie has a flashback and you see the character as a kid? Sometimes that's awesome."

Some are cute, some are weird, funny, or remarkably similar (Once Upon a Time in America, whoa), and others, remarkably not. Either way, once you start looking, it's pretty darn difficult to stop.

Another cool thing that happens: occcasionally you'll recognize both actors, like Jennifer Connelly in Once Upon a Time in America (above), Camilla Belle as little Sandra Bullock, or even the annoying kid from those Santa Clause movies (just knew he had to make an appearance) as little Robert Downey, Jr.

And, because I just don't feel like waiting 'til Thanksgiving to get into the holiday spirit:

  • The Strong and Stylish Ladies of Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2When I went to see the new blockbuster hit, Iron Man 2, this weekend, I expected plenty of action packed scenes and stunning graphics to go with it. The last thing I expected was to be struck by the amazing wardrobe choices of the film's two hot leading ladies.

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, the smart and faithful assistant to Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. Scarlett Johansson also joins the cast as Natasha Rushman, Tony's mysterious new assistant who's not only beautiful but kicks major butt.

Scarlett's character is definitely meant to be the sultry type. Her sharp business attire accentuates her feminine features with the utmost of confidence. Her wardrobe also seems to borrow from 1940's retro style with its high waistlines, polished pumps and one leopard print dress to die for!

Gwyneth's wardrobe is a bit more conservative. Black, grey and navy dresses pair with a tasteful boat neckline to keep her look focused on business while remaining both simplistic and lovely.

Have you seen the film? If so, who wore your favorite look?

  • Sex and the City Update: Aidan or Mr.Big?

Sex and the City fans everywhere are no doubt greatly anticipating the release of the second movie later this month. If I wasn't excited by the first trailer, the newest ones have me floored.

Upon seeing Carrie's past love interest, Aidan Shaw, added to the mix, I quickly cried to my roommate, "What are they doing to me?"

A lover of the good guy with no tricks up his sleeve, I was a big Aidan fan and disappointed to see him go. Bringing him back now would just be toying with my heart.

That's when I wondered what other fans thought. Were there any second thoughts in regards to losing Aidan, or was Mr. Big the right choice?

I took a quick poll of fellow LuLu*s workers who watched the show, asking if they'd choose Mr. Big or Aidan for Carrie's soul mate. Outcome: Mr. Big won by two votes.

While many of us would have picked Aidan ourselves, there was a general agreement that he wasn't right for Carrie. Now, that I can understand.

Now it's your turn: Who would you choose? And please, no spoilers!

  • Must-See Movie: "Paper Heart"

Fiction and non-fiction unite in a little story about love.

The filmmakers of Paper Heart refer to their creation as a "hybrid documentary" in that it blends real life stories and documentary-style filmmaking within a fictional storyline.

Staring actors Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera, the 2009 film attempts to take a look at love from many different angles.

It starts out with Charlyne making a documentary about love - something she hasn't encountered in romance and wishes to learn more about.

    Enter Michael Cera.

After meeting Cera at a house party, Charlyne is obviously smitten and their fictional romance soon blossoms into the focal point of the documentary. Though their relationship was set up and scripted, I found it charmingly fresh, believable and relatable. I loved the timid beginnings of their courtship, from the first awkward silences, to the hesitant handholding and eventually to the revelation of their true feelings for each other.

Let's also not forget the great interviews between Charlyne and others on the topic of love. From new couples, old couples, optimistic children, a divorcee, some scientists and even a psychic, Charlyne discovers more about what love means to different people and what it means to herself.

So, whether you're a love skeptic or a true believer, Paper Heart gives everyone little food for thought on an age-old mystery, l'amore.

  • Meowsk Reports: Wonderland of a Wardrobe

Brought to you by Shauna at Meowsk!

A few weekends ago, I went to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and ever since have been enamored with the costuming and clever wardrobe changes throughout the film. Designed by Colleen Atwood, the dresses look like something that would show up on fashion runways around the world. I love that they are a modern take on the iconic Alice outfit, with bits of authenticity and bold embellishments.

The original Alice dress. I adore the black detailing along the neckline and skirt hem.

An edgier Alice look with fluttery fabrics and striped ribbons. This dress needs to find its way to my closet ASAP.

A mini dress for a tiny Alice. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a better detail shot of this dress.

Off onto other adventures Alice dress. Love that skirt.

Don't worry if you haven't seen the movie yet; I didn't give everything away. There is still one very special dress that I left out.

Feeling inspired by the previews, I of course had to create
my own Alice outfit which I totally wore to see the film. Have you styled an Alice-inspired outfit? Share it with us, and let me know your favorite costume in the film.

  • New Single from She & Him!

Summer is fast approaching, and I have a feeling that She & Him's new album Volume Two will be essential part of my summer soundtrack.

If you aren't familiar with She & Him, here's the breakdown:

The band consists of M. Ward, a indie singer-songwriter who rose to fame out of the Portland, Oregon, music scene, and Zooey Deschanel, one of our favorite actresses here at Lulus.com. M. Ward was impressed by Zooey's singing in the movie Elf, and after she sent him some demos, he insisted she record them proper. Thus, She & Him was born.

I first heard of She & Him almost two years ago to the day, when I was asked to record a video review of their first album, Volume One, for the college radio station I was working for. I've had them stuck in my head ever since.

The pair just premiered the video for their new single "In the Sun" that's absolutely adorable. Check it out below:

Their sophomore album, Volume Two, hits stores March 23, so mark your calendars.

  • Ladies We Love: Meryl Streep

News Header Meryl Streep black & white portrait wearing hatIf you loved to hate Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada or were charmed by the bold cooking antics of Julia Child in Julie & Julia, then you have encountered the amazing talent of the one and only Meryl Streep.

From the Bridges of Madison County to her most recent film, It's Complicated, Ms. Streep has never ceased to keep me coming back to her films. I always appreciate the way she transforms herself for each role so that you suddenly forget you are watching Meryl Streep and become completely involved with her character.

Send good vibes her way for this year's Academy Awards, in which she is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Julie & Julia!
