  • Kristin Knuaff: PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF

    Kristin Knauff Reports from L.A.:

PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF WE L.A. (LOVE ART) – JANUARY 22-23 AT THE MONTALBAN THEATER

Kristen Knauff just sent us exclusive pictures from a pretty sweet sounding Paper Magazine event in Los Angeles. Paper Magazine is one of my personal favorite publications (ever since I got stuck in their elevator as an art student in NYC) and they seem to be throwing some of the coolest parties this year.

This event was a three-part series focused on bringing together emerging artists, art, musicians and students in an interactive experience. The WE LOVE ART party was catered towards making ongoing and interactive art installations focused on audience participation. A large studio was open for high school and college-aged students to get creative who attended the event.

Live music performances during this experiences included: Samuel Stewart, son of Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart and Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey, and the CobraSnake, celebrated local DJ and event photographer. DJ Ana Calderon from the indie label Dim Mak set the mood. Popular DJs Skeet Skeet and TOKiMONSTA will be spinning and live performances by headliners Best Coast, and Dum Dum Girls kept people movin!

Girls were wearing their brights out to this event! Layered lace and lots of neon were a big fashion must-have for this party.

Artists in attendance included Karen Kimmel, Confetti System, Damion Silver, Scott Patt, Darren Romanelli, Telefantasy Studios... and many more...

One of the exhibitions was Karen Kimmel’s “Art of Exchange” stencil workshop; an ongoing series that encourages people of all ages to make their own creative mark. A dance class was taught by Ryan Heffington called Sweaty Sunday's and included artists, photographers, fashion designers, and screenwriters wearing their best Lycra and bright pastel outfits for a dance-off to indie rock, techno, and 1980s new wave hits. Ryan Heffington is a choreographer, performance artist, and designer.

Featured throughout the course of the two days will be a series of 24 short films, created by Converse, that shine a light on unknown artists from around the globe. Sharing a common thread of passion for their work, the films show the artists at work, conveying personal stories that show their creative process and inspiration. Each film ends with a call to action that challenges the user to find their path to creativity.

  • METROPOLIS: Janelle Monáe

"There can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator. " Metropolis by Franz Lang

A few weeks ago I did a blog featuring our L.A. lady Kristin Knauff's boyfriend Jiro Schneider. The blog was about his awesome photography, including his cover shoot for Paper Magazine with Janelle Monáe.

Soooooo, last night I found a backstage video (don't know how I didn't see it the last time) from the Jiro Schneider shoot with Paper Magazine. Then using my amazing detective skills I finally looked into this curious Janelle Monáe and found quite a lot of interesting material ...

What I found out is that ... let's just say ... hmmm ... Janelle Monáe ... is not exactly from this world but is more ... well ... outttta this world ... Metropolis style.

If you have ever seen Franz Lang's Metropolis you will understand, or at least, be equally confused as to what reality or surreality we are talking about. Now ... "Open your minds, earthlings, and prepare to be launched headfirst into an alternate universe. A place where robots fall in love with humans. Where your tour guide into this alternate realm is a demure lil thang with a bold set of pipes.

"I'm an alien from outer space," declares Janelle Monáe on the first song of her debut album, Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition).

Yes, Toto, we are no longer in Kansas anymore. Or even planet Earth."...

What I found in my Janelle Monae search is that the lady behind the photos that Jiro took is an android full of expression from a far off planet. Janelle's music displays a range of funk that stays super fresh while reminding me of the late Michael Jackson.

Not only is the music enough to transport you to another world but Janelle herself is so entrancing that you might as well be being sucked into a Metropolis. She bounces and dances all over the stage as she sings her upbeat diddies about an android in pursuit of love.

This joy ride is not about sitting back and falling into the lull of a melody but more like falling straight into a high energy love pursuit lead by Janelle's voice.

"She may be living in a fantasy world of her own creation, but Janelle Monáe is confident you won’t want to leave once you’ve visited."

  • Jiro Schneider's Beautiful People Portraits

The great Annie Leibovitz has become so emulated and copied that I sadly find myself bored when looking at most fashion photographs anymore. It's been hard to find a photographer that really captures someone in the camera and in a style of their own.

I have recently, with the help of my boss at Lulus.com, found an awesome portrait photographer who really brings something sweet to the table. His name is Jiro Schneider (also the photographer from the Paper Magazine party blog post!).

"In my eyes, photography is about meeting people," explains Schneider.  "If you don’t like that, then you can’t be a portrait photographer. Doesn’t matter if you speak the same language or not, if you can connect on some level, even for an instance, it’s a beautiful thing."

  • Fashion Week Party with Paper Magazine!

I have been trying my best to keep the Lulus.com blog readers up to date with Fashion Week as it is happening around the world!

This week, we received pictures from our buyer, Kristin, when she went to Paper Magazine's 25th anniversary Fashion Week party in New York City. The event had famous designers as well as celebrities like Liza Minelli, Mischa Barton, Kid Cudi, the now infamously rude Kanye West, and Queen Latifah.

Kristin's boyfriend Jiro Schnieder has done some awesome photography for Paper and took the photos below when they were at the party!

    Kanye West & Mischa Barton

    Betsey Johnson & Isaac Mizrahi
