After the horror fest of this weekend, I’m ready to curl up on my couch with some new tracks and recover from the sugar rush—especially in this rainy winter weather. If you’re still enjoying blue skies, I’ve got mad jealousy!

Missy Elliot – “I Can’t Stand The Rain”

Missaaaaaay! I love this woman more than is probably healthy, and it cannot be denied: her tunes are fresher than a new loaf of bread. This old school Missy track is what got me on the Elliot train in the first place, and I’ve never looked back. Lulettes, she is supa dupa fly.

Bill Withers – “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Bill Withers’ smooth vocals and delivery make this song a must have for your car, your ipod, or mix cd for that special someone in your life—trust me on this one, folks. Plus, check out his sweet turtleneck! Amazing.

Rupert Holmes – “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”

If you don’t like this song, you’re nuts! Cute lyrics and a catchy as hell melody make for a delightful storytelling song—and, c’mon: everyone likes pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. Everyone.

I’m no snob about pop music. After all, what do you sing at the top of your lungs with all your buddies? A pop song, that’s what. Here are my favorite singalongs on the charts right now:

Neon Trees – “Animal”

I love the scratchy vocals and the tempo of this song. Neon Trees has been climbing the charts with this winner and I say good for them! This is a great track from an overall snappy album that has been a big hit on my stereo lately.

Adele – “Make You Feel My Love”

Oh my goodness, this song is beautiful. Adele’s rich, sultry voice is perfectly matched to the vulnerability in these lyrics and video. Currently at #20 on the UK charts, this slow, gorgeous song is sure to win a special place in your heart.

The Wanted – “All Time Low”

OMG hot boy band! Ignore their stiff, wannabe male model poses and all around cheesy video and just concentrate on their dreamy (and varied!) facial structures, hairstyles, and outfits—all while bobbing your head along to this kick ass dance jam! I love this song for it’s catchy hook of a melody and the British accents that peek into their singing voices. Adorable!

Let’s keep it fresh this week by, ironically, going classic.

Each of these songs was released sometime this week—just a few years back, that’s all.

Sam Cooke – “You Send Me” (Released October 16, 1957)

Cooke’s first and biggest hit is a classic love song that everyone with a heartbeat oughta appreciate. This song may incite slow dancing with strangers or mere acquaintances. Consider this a fair warning and check out this old school recording of Mr. Cooke performing this beautiful tune:

Big Brother & The Holding Company – Cheap Thrills (Released October 12, 1968)

I know, I know—this ain’t just one song, it’s a whole record! But hey, this one’s worth it. With Janis Joplin as their lead singer, San Francisco’s Big Brother & the Holding Company was a tour de force in the rock and roll scene whose album Cheap Thrills remains a tent pole to any great music collection. This record is also where you’ll find their quintessential hit, “Summertime.” (fun fact: Sam Cooke’s recording of “Summertime” deserves just as much play as Janis’s!)

Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing (Released October 15, 1982)

If you haven’t begun your Marvin Gaye education yet, this song is a good place to start. Not only do you need to give it a few listens to erase every grade school joke about this amazing track from your brain, but afterwards you’ve got to start collecting every song Marvin Gaye ever created. Let his smooth R&B cleanse and revitalize you.

It’s almost time for that excellent jacket-wearing weather we all adore. This week’s Playlister embraces the cold with some chilly themed tracks to drink a cup of cocoa with.

Janelle Monae – “Cold War”

The video for this addictive dance track rocks the perfect simplicity for such an energetic song. This jam is about being bad all by yourself: “So you think I'm alone?/But being alone's the only way to be/When you step outside/You spend life fighting for your sanity,” she belts in a beautiful vibrato. I hear ya, sister!

The White Stripes – “In The Cold Cold Night”

Meg White’s vocals are unadorned and just so darn pretty on this track that the absence of The White Stripes’ generally heavier sound is perfectly alright with me. This song has the added benefit of sounding just creepy enough in places for the upcoming Halloween season. Mmmm, candy.

Fleet Foxes – “White Winter Hymnal”

Oh, how I love Fleet Foxes. This song’s dreamlike harmonies and intense images makes for quite the car trip or walk to class, though the video is nearly the best part of an already amazing song—stop motion animation shows a lovely time lapse video complete with a bunch of dudes that look like garden gnomes. You’ve gotta see it to believe it, ladies.

Playlister:

This week is all about staying on top of my workload. Who’s with me?! Set phasers to stun, ladies, and turn up the soundtrack to taking on the world in style.

Adam and the Ants – “Kings of the Wild Frontier”

If I need to get pumped, I put on this song. With a frenzied, militaristic drumbeat and expressive chant-like lyrics, this song sounds like The Clash gone savage. Need a “fierce” boost? Turn this ish up. (P.S. Don’t you love the singer’s jacket in this video? A little bird told me that this style is a must this winter!)

Miike Snow – “Sylvia”

If you like OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” you’ll love this track. The melodies are upbeat and kind of spacey, like these Swedes went to a dance club on a comet to write and record “Sylvia.” Synthesizers are backed up by a sweet piano lick that soothes the soul while getting that booty moving. Dance break, anyone?

The Juliana Hatfield Three – “Spin the Bottle”

This song tells the timeless tale of the anticipation of young love and party games. It’s true feel-good 90’s alternative pop rock, complete with bright girlish vocals, a catchy guitar hook and sassy yet relatable lyrics.

Now that school’s started, I keep finding myself making homework playlists on my iTunes instead of actually writing essays. Oops! Here’re the songs I’ve got on repeat this week:

Of Montreal – “Hydra Fancies”

This song is filled with synthesized goodness that sprinkles out Kevin Barnes’ weirdly satisfying melodies with an upbeat, trippy gusto. Pumping this on my morning walk to school never ceases to amaze.

Brandon Flowers – “Swallow It”

I’m obsessed! BFlo’s sweet, intelligent “Swallow It” features a steady build that makes me want to dance with my eyes closed and my hair in my face, fearlessly. Either that or sing really loudly by myself in the car on the freeway. The usual.

Bow Wow Wow – “Fools Rush In”

This cover of the classic song has a killer new wave twist. Not only is it a great karaoke song, but you’ll feel all bubbly and colorful while you listen to this excellent version. It’s like being at a luau in the middle of an African safari. Who could resist?
