  • Vintage Spotlight: A Retro Kind of Summer

With vintage inspired designs so hot for this spring and summer I thought it would be nice to examine some of the original designs and appreciate some of our vintage selections! With 60's mod dresses, 70's prints, ponchos and more, LuLu*s has you covered for your Summer of Love!

This perfect 60's Pendleton Camel Shift Dress is a classic sixties dress and the color will go great with anything. Lately I have loved seeing cool neutrals paired with electric brights and this is the perfect shift to start with!

This summer you will find me in dresses similiar to the Bali-High Boho Dress, shown above. Pretty paisley print and perfect puff sleeves make this a go-to choice when the temperature heats up!

For the transistion from spring to summer reach for the Gilligan's Sassy Sister sweater to stay warm. I love the sienna color and the v-neck collar! So easy to pair with denim!

For cool summer nights throw the Boho Aztec Fringe Poncho in your bag and hit the road! Perfect with cut-off denim shorts and moccasins; you will get tons of wear out of this vintage poncho!

What vintage will you be wearing this summer?

  • The Strong and Stylish Ladies of Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2When I went to see the new blockbuster hit, Iron Man 2, this weekend, I expected plenty of action packed scenes and stunning graphics to go with it. The last thing I expected was to be struck by the amazing wardrobe choices of the film's two hot leading ladies.

Gwyneth Paltrow returns as Pepper Potts, the smart and faithful assistant to Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. Scarlett Johansson also joins the cast as Natasha Rushman, Tony's mysterious new assistant who's not only beautiful but kicks major butt.

Scarlett's character is definitely meant to be the sultry type. Her sharp business attire accentuates her feminine features with the utmost of confidence. Her wardrobe also seems to borrow from 1940's retro style with its high waistlines, polished pumps and one leopard print dress to die for!

Gwyneth's wardrobe is a bit more conservative. Black, grey and navy dresses pair with a tasteful boat neckline to keep her look focused on business while remaining both simplistic and lovely.

Have you seen the film? If so, who wore your favorite look?

  • How Dita Does Coachella

Dita Von Teese, queen of burlesque and hot retro style, took in the sights and sounds of this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Dita spent the three-day event looking flawless in a variety of outfits that adapted retro glamour for life under a sunny desert sky.

(Left): I am in love with Dita's nautical-style, high-waisted trousers. Her updo is also rockin', managing a put-together look that is also casual.

(Above): From the mary jane wedges to the layers of bangles, this is Dita's awesome version of boho beauty. I love all the earthy tones on that tropical print dress!

(Above): Ladylike charm is what it's all about in this look. Soft satin ruffles, that polished hat and a pretty chain purse keep Dita looking elegant. Psssst, recognize that lovely lady with her? Yep, it's Katy Perry looking day-glo pretty.

What was your favorite Dita look?

  • NEON DAY at LULUS.COM!!!

It was NEON DAY at Lulus.com today and it couldn't have been a better day! The sun was out and shining bright along with our employees. Check out these pics of our NEON day!

Indya and Lindsay were caught on Amy's scooter and Matt and Tyler (two of our three male employees!) even participated with their own rainbow bright neon outfits!

Oh, how cute are boys in NEON?! (FYI: They'd kill me to hear me talk about them like that, but they are quite adorable, no?)

  • Glee and Madonna, but of course!

Return of Glee + Madonna + Sue Sylvester + the beauty of viral advertising = excellent viewing

Last night a promo video for Glee's upcoming episode featuring a Madonna playlist was aired. Jane Lynch sings along to "Vogue," making me want to grab the new Like a Prayer Gloves and dance around the warehouse circa 1990. Strike a pose, there's nothing to it!!

  • Style Do or Don't: Bettie Page Bangs

I've always loved the iconic hair of retro pin-up model Bettie Page. Known for her short pixie bangs and curvy brown locks, Bettie's hair became her unique and edgy style accessory.

In short, Bettie Page bangs are cut to hit at about mid-forehead and curve up towards the temples of your head.

I've noticed this style of bang becoming increasingly popular among hip, fashion forward women. To me, the look carries cool, rockabilly vibes and can really make a girl stand out. At the same time, I would never make the cut myself.

Just a smidge above eyebrow length is about as short as I will go. I just know that a super short bang wouldn't flatter my face shape. While I admire the cut on a lot of women, it's still a daring look to pull off.

(Above: Actress Gretchen Mol in The Notorious Bettie Page. Below: Bettie Page)

That being said, I've noticed that certain styles manage to capture the essence of the original Bettie Page cut while toning down the extremes to make it more flattering on different face shapes.

Above, I love how Katy Perry's bangs sit just above the eyebrow and curve just slightly up the sides, not sharply. Designer Maya Luz from this season's Project Runway sports the same style, keeping the bangs semi-short and mostly strait towards the sides of the head. I've been drooling over her hair all season (and rooting her on to win!) For both Katy and Maya, dark straightened locks and bold lipstick give the look a little extra retro boost.

What do you think? Would you make the cut?

  • Kristin Knuaff: PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF

    Kristin Knauff Reports from L.A.:

PAPER MAGAZINE & CONVERSE KICK-OFF WE L.A. (LOVE ART) – JANUARY 22-23 AT THE MONTALBAN THEATER

Kristen Knauff just sent us exclusive pictures from a pretty sweet sounding Paper Magazine event in Los Angeles. Paper Magazine is one of my personal favorite publications (ever since I got stuck in their elevator as an art student in NYC) and they seem to be throwing some of the coolest parties this year.

This event was a three-part series focused on bringing together emerging artists, art, musicians and students in an interactive experience. The WE LOVE ART party was catered towards making ongoing and interactive art installations focused on audience participation. A large studio was open for high school and college-aged students to get creative who attended the event.

Live music performances during this experiences included: Samuel Stewart, son of Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart and Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey, and the CobraSnake, celebrated local DJ and event photographer. DJ Ana Calderon from the indie label Dim Mak set the mood. Popular DJs Skeet Skeet and TOKiMONSTA will be spinning and live performances by headliners Best Coast, and Dum Dum Girls kept people movin!

Girls were wearing their brights out to this event! Layered lace and lots of neon were a big fashion must-have for this party.

Artists in attendance included Karen Kimmel, Confetti System, Damion Silver, Scott Patt, Darren Romanelli, Telefantasy Studios... and many more...

One of the exhibitions was Karen Kimmel’s “Art of Exchange” stencil workshop; an ongoing series that encourages people of all ages to make their own creative mark. A dance class was taught by Ryan Heffington called Sweaty Sunday's and included artists, photographers, fashion designers, and screenwriters wearing their best Lycra and bright pastel outfits for a dance-off to indie rock, techno, and 1980s new wave hits. Ryan Heffington is a choreographer, performance artist, and designer.

Featured throughout the course of the two days will be a series of 24 short films, created by Converse, that shine a light on unknown artists from around the globe. Sharing a common thread of passion for their work, the films show the artists at work, conveying personal stories that show their creative process and inspiration. Each film ends with a call to action that challenges the user to find their path to creativity.

  • A Very Vintage Style Manicure

For the retro gal who has already mastered the hair and makeup, a vintage-style manicure is your next best accessory.

Sported by the bold and stylish Dita Von Teese, retro nails of the 30's and 40's have a very distinct and glamorous look. Each nail is grown long in an oval shape that is filed to a point at the tip. Traditionally the moons and tips of the nail were left uncolored, but I like how Dita sports it with the moons filled in with contrasting white lacquer.

Try out the look at home. I love this tutorial from MsFaintlyMacabre's YouTube channel. Her nails look stunning at the finish!

  • A Tropical Iceland Even in the Rain with the Fiery Furnaces!!

As the ice is thawing and the sun is trying to peak out through the grey clouds, the Fiery Furnaces "Tropical Iceland" song seems all too perfect! Check out these funny music videos below for some laughs this weekend!

Below is another hilarious Fiery Furnaces video that mimics Easy Rider with Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda from 1969 (one of my all time personal favorites). Their style is pretty cool and fun for the video but I think this song is a little too slow! Watch it and see what you think.
