  • How To: Style Your Fall Scarves

Finally, temperatures are dropping, leaves are turning, and scarves are busting their way out of my closet like bats out of hell. I've been anxiously counting the numbers as they drop off of my thermometer, all because I am a layer addict, and scarves are my drug of choice.

Now, that being said, I'm no expert at tying/wrapping/whatever-you-wanna-call-it-ing them. Several family members have asked me how to wear them properly, to which I reply: "Uh, I dunno. You just, like, wrap it and swirl and tug, and yeah...". So, to satisfy not only my own curiosity, I went searching and found the best tutorial ever from Who What Wear, and recreated it here, with a few extra notes and tips for a flawless execution.

There are five styles to choose from: The Classic, The Boho, The Prep, The Modern, and The City. Yes, some of them are quite similar, but playing around with some subtle switch-ups keeps the boredom at bay.

    Up first: The Classic

    Step 1:
    (a) Drape the scarf around your neck, and...
    (b) loop so one side is longer. (How much longer? Enough to wrap back around your neck twice, because, guess what comes next...).

Step 2: Loop the long side around your neck once more.

Step 3: Take both ends (they'll be uneven) and tie them in a knot. Then tuck the longer side in the fold, letting the shorter end peek out a bit at the bottom. Done!

    Now, The Boho:

    Step 1:
    (a) Drape the scarf evenly across your shoulders, then...
    (b) loop around your neck so both sides are even.

Step 2: Tie a knot with the loose the ends, leaving about 6" to dangle.

Step 3: Pull the circle/loop over the knot, and let the ends dangle out the bottom. Voila!

(this one is great because you can even do it with shorter scarves)

    How about... The Prep:
(Hint: Steps 1 & 2 are the same as the Classic, but for the sake of continuity....)

    Step 1:
    (a) Drape the scarf around your neck, and...
    (b) loop so one side is longer.

Step 2: Loop the long side around your neck once more.

    Step 3:
    (a) Grab the end of that (longer) side and...
    (b) pull it through the (outer) circle around the neck.

Step 4: Tie both ends together with a loose knot. Le Fin!

Or maybe you feel like, say, The Modern
(or what I call the "Homemade Infinity Scarf")

Step 1: Wrap the scarf around the neck evenly.

Step 2: Tie the ends together (at the tips) in a double knot.

    Step 3: Twist, and...

Step 4: Back over the head. Tada!

Best for last? It's The City!:
(Guess what. Once again, steps 1 & 2 are the same as The Classic, but for the sake of continuity....)

    Step 1:
    (a) Drape the scarf around your neck and...
    (b) loop so one side is longer.

Step 2: Loop the long side around your neck once more.

Step 3: Tug on the longer side until the shorter tip is hidden.

Step 4: Take the tip of the long side and tuck it into the top of the opposite side (behind the neck). That's it!

How easy was that! So get experimenting, and remember, the perfect scarf styling lends itself to some serious tugging, pulling and fluffing, so feel free to fuss!

And don't forget to check the fabulous selection of scarves here at LuLu*s!

  • Get Your Brixton Fix!

    Love your hat collection?
Cute hats are pretty much a killer way to accessorize an outfit, and while the hot days are still here, the cooler Autumn ways are coming.

My prediction: This Fall it's all about letting your hair down and topping it with a simple cap that's got just a bit of boyish charm.

The makers at Brixton are doing it right. I have in front of me a new shipment from their Fall 2010 collection, and if there is something I can tell you from across these digital highways, Brixton means fine quality and cutting edge style.

  • Making a List, Checking it Twice!

Hey Lulu*s fans, the holidays have finally arrived, and all of us here at LuLu*s central are rivaling the productivity of the North Pole, busily working to make sure you have plenty of cute gifts to both give and get this season!

Our jewelry selection is growing each day, and I'm loving the assortment of pocket watch necklaces and lockets to be had. They make the perfect stocking stuffers. Not to mention all the cozy hats, arm warmers and scarves that any girl would love and appreciate on a frosty day.

Just so Santa gets the hint, I'm making my list early this year. Here are my holiday must-haves (so far, anyway):

The Tattler Owl Pocket Watch Necklace [sold out!] was love at first hoot!

Our has Let it Snow Scarf [sold out!] has been selling like wildfire, and no wonder! This thing is so darn soft and lovely. I love the dark grey color here. Perfect for a winter day.

Ok, ok, so it's a little much for a stocking stuffer, but our All the Trimmings Dress in Green [sold out!] will be perfect for that next holiday party.

What's on your list this year?

  • The Darling, Sarah Darling!

I now present our favorite fan: the wondrous, the beautiful, and the charming Sarah Darling! Here is Sarah Darling's tale of finding Lulus.com, music, writing, and her calling.

When I travel for music, I always grab tons of magazines for the road. I happened to grab a People Stylewatch about 6 months ago, and my eyes caught this really cute dress. It said it was from Lulus.com!

I'm a dress freak and a girly girl. When I got to my hotel room, I checked out the site and ended up buying a ton of stuff. I fell in love with lulus right from the start!

My favorites are the Love Fool Dress and my Miss Me jeans! I like jeans with a little bling!

Ever since I was a little girl, I was into fashion. I've never been afraid of color and I consider my look very classic. I have always loved wearing dresses. I think it's because I am a fan of the 40's. My favorite designer ever is Betsey Johnson, if that says anything about me.

I grew up a small-town girl who loves fishing, baseball and the outdoors, but I might be wearing a fancy dress while doing it. (Ha ha!) I'm the type of girl who wears cute stuff while I cook! I am a fan of women dressing up and feeling feminine!

As I get older, I've been doing a lot more accessorizing. I'm totally obsessed with scarves right now. I think I might have a hundred!

I'm loving the tights and legging with dresses. I think that will always be in style!

Music has always been a part of who I am. I was born singing, I swear. Been wanting to do this since I can remember. My music is very real and I consider my songs little stories of my life. When I write a song, I put my heart into it.

I started writing at age 23. I moved to Nashville at 20 and it took a failed relationship and just being away from my family to really inspire me to start writing music.

"Jack Of Hearts" was written about a boy that I fell madly in love with. It just so happened that when we were having problems in our relationship, a friend into astrology said that he was the Jack of Hearts. Apparently we all have a card that lines up with our birthday. Check out your card. It's so much fun! I wrote a little song about it anyway!

My favorite part of making the album was seeing my songs come to life. You are so much more personally invested when the songs are yours and your diary. My goal is to always move people. That's what music is all about to me. I consider it my gift in life.

    -- Sarah Darling

Sarah Darling's music video for Jack of Hearts (above) is one of the top 50 Music Videos of 2009 on Great American Country ... soooo ladies, go vote for Sarah Darling so her video moves to #1!

  • Model Pick of the Week: Into the Fray Scarf in Black

This week our favorite stylist, Cara, picked her favorite model pic as the Into the Fray Scarf in Black! [sold out!] This scarf is versatile and oh sooooo soft and comfy.

If you decide to buy the scarf -- and it is highly recommended that you do -- you are sure to achieve fashion bliss! Our model wears it in a very classy way with the Alternative Mr. Rodgers Cardigan [sold out!]. The Crazy Cara Cardigan [sold out!] (named after the stylist herself) is another sweater/scarf combo option.

However, the scarf can be worn in so soooo many different ways. You can stay cool and classy, or go edgy and artsy. Your pick!

  • Model Pick of the Week: Lulea Vest & Cute as a Button Shrug

Wow! We are working hard here at Lulus.com getting ready for the Fall season. New shipments are coming in every day with cozy items for the impending cold weather.

We had two favorites this week, the first picked by our model Michelle, seen below wearing the Lulea Vest [sold out!]. This vest has those great zippers that have been so hot this season, combined with a vintage feel from the great vegan fur and leather.

The second item is the Cute as a Button Shrug [sold out!]. Brittany, our marvelous customer service rep (who doubles as a personal shopper if you ever need some advice ;) ) put it perfectly: "Put buttons on a scarf and it is everything. It just makes so much sense!"

Talk about snuggle time! This shrug works as a scarf, vest, sleeves, jackets, etc., etc., a perfect wear all. Kendra, below, is showing but a few of the various ways to wear this bad boy.

    Until next week, fashion bugs!

  • A Little Black Dress for Every Day

Lulus.com is the perfect place to provide our budgeting fashionistas with the materials they need to make the challenge of taking one fabulous piece and styling it into limitless possibilities. All of us here at LuLu*s have been following The Uniform Project, which takes the concept of transforming the little black dress to a whole new level.

The creator of this site, Sheena Matheiken, has vowed to wear the same black dress for 365 days to support the cause of education in India. In her blog she explains, "I was raised and schooled in India where uniforms were a mandate in most public schools. Despite the imposed conformity, kids always found a way to bend the rules and flaunt a little personality."

Not only is this a concept for a cause, but it supports the challenge that many of us are living with in this time of economic turmoil and recession, looking chic everyday of the week while keeping it cheap! Also, this is a great example of breaking out of the business attire and school regulated clothing and getting in touch with our own personal fashion.

Lulus.com offers endless possibilities to make this happen! We suggest investing in the BB Dakota Kay dress [sold out!], or for a younger look, the BB Dakota by Jack Nataliaz Dress in Black  [sold out!] for your staple piece. Try mixing in funky leggings, scarves, belts, and headbands to freshen up your look for less! Pieces I am currently loving include the Heartfelt Cardigan in Grey [sold out!], the Smithsonian Necklace [sold out!], the Carefree crop top in taupe [sold out!], and the Peacock Feather Hair Clip [sold out!].
