  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of Jenloveskev: Georgia O'Keefe

Hi Friends, it's Jen again from Jenloveskev. I hope you are all having a fabulous summer. Today, for our Art Inspired Fashion post, we are going to look at a Georgia O'Keeffe painting.

It's titled "Deer's Skull with Pedernal" and was painted in 1936. I chose this particular painting by Georgia O'Keeffe because I was drawn to the colors and how calm and serene the painting feels.

I was instantly inspired to create an outfit from the painting. I wanted to feel like a traveler; someone out to make their own path. This painting made me want to explore the desert and find neat treasures along the way.

These shorts are super comfortable to walk around in, and the pattern on them is so fun and fashionable – the colors are just beautiful.

This cross shoulder bag is great for collecting all the trinkets you find along your journey!

These Jeffrey Campbell wedges are the perfect exploring shoe. The wedge isn't very high, so they're easy to walk in. The neutral color helps makes your legs look extra long too!

Bonus! Layer it all up with some cool necklaces and lots of bracelets and you're good to go. Whether you are a trailblazer in the city or the desert, this is the perfect summer outfit.

  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of Jenloveskev: Henri Matisse

Hey everyone! It's Jen again from Jenloveskev. Here we are with the 2nd installment of our Art Inspired Fashion posts. This month I decided to choose a famous French painter because I am going to Paris next month for a week!! I am so excited. One of my favorite painters is Henri Matisse. He used such beautiful bold colors, and every painting is a joy to look at. That is why I chose this Seville Still Life painting; it is so full of life with all the contrasting patterns.

I didn't want to be so literal with my interpretation, but I did look around for a fancy couch in a red room to take pictures. I guess we are in short supply of those in my neck of the woods. Haha!

Anyway, when I saw this dress I knew it would be perfect. Not only for this painting but for summer as well. I love the floral print and the colors that are used, not to mention how cute the collar is. Isn't it adorable?

I swear the color of this dress is the same color of the background of the painting. I see lots of remixing in our future together!!

  • Art Inspired Fashion by Jen of jenloveskev

Hi everyone! It's Jen from jenloveskev and I am super excited about this new feature here on the Lulu's blog. I get asked all the time where I get my fashion inspiration and my number one answer is from Art. I think it's fun to look for fashion inspiration in unlikely places. As an art/art history major in college I soaked it up. For this first Fashion from Art post, I chose Joseph Cornell. Joseph Cornell was an American Artist and one of the pioneers of Assemblage art. Assemblage is a three-dimensional composition made from putting together found objects.

This is why I love him so much. I have always been a collector, I LOVE junk. I will find rusty metal on the ground and I pick it up to take home because it looks cool. This has transferred into my style as well. I love mixing patterns, textures and styles. Untitled (The Hotel Eden) is a great example of that. There are different materials and textures all while staying sort of neutral.

I decided this pretty Snickerdoodle Cream Blouse worked great because of the eyelet mixed with the Chiffon fabric and ruffles. It has dimension.

I decided to keep everything neutral in my outfit and add a pop of color with my green socks just like that cute bird.

The added jewelry works so well (especially the necklace) to add a sort of constructed feel to a very feminine outfit.

All in all I think this was a great representation of one of my favorite pieces of art.

    See you next month!

  • How to Wear High-Waisted Shorts and Skirts: The Ultimate Vintage Look

The High-wasited trend has been around since the 1940s and it will be around for quite some time, which I am ecstatic about! It is the ideal fashion tip to elongate your legs and accentuate your waist. High-waisted bottoms are also a solution to every girl’s dread: the muffin top. The key is to find bottoms that hit your natural waist and hugs your hips. Who doesn’t want to look like a tall vintage-inspired beauty queen?

Here are some style tips of how to attain the classic and sophisticated high-waist style:

    1. Make sure your high-waisted shorts are nice and snug, they will be unflattering on you if there is bunching of the fabric. The most important thing to remember when sporting this trend is to find bottoms that suit your body type perfectly.
    2. Cropped tops are ideal for the high-waist look because of how easy they tuck in. It is VERY important to tuck in your shirt if you want to pull off this look. When tucking, don’t pull the top out too much because this adds volume to your waist. Also, do not tuck in too much or else you will look stiff and uncomfortable. A personal crop top favorite is the Picking Petunias Pink Top for its adorable ruffles and girly color.
    3. Belts are a must with this look. Pick a skinny belt to draw attention to your high-waisted style. Or, if you want to emphasis your upper body and cinch your waist, a wide belt is a must!
    4. Heels heels heels! These are the perfect final touch to this look because heels add to the elongated look of the legs.

Even cute Betty White rocked this style when she was younger!

Here are some perfect options from Lulu*s to start you off with this trend the right way:

     Shorts:

  • Jillian Clare from Miss Behave!

Jillian Claire wearing a Lulus.com dressJillian Clare is a hot-rising 17-year-old actress most recognized from her award-winning performance as Abby Deveraux on NBC's Days of Our Lives. She is currently leading the cast of a web series and social network called Miss Behave, set to premiere in June, about real teens with everyday issues.

Not only is she an actress, she is a LuLu*s fasionista as well! Whether she is on the red carpet, filming, or out and about around town, Jillian is always spotted wearing designs from Lulus.com.

In the picture at left, Jillian looked fabulous on the red carpet wearing our Always Have Paris Dress at the Multicultural Harmony Benefit Gala on March 13. Below, Jillian is workin' it in a stylish outfit paired with the Sun City Handbag by Melie Bianco.

Below is a photo from Day 1 of filming Miss Behave

We were lucky enough to interview Jillian Clare to find out about her style, career and inspiration.

What is your favorite thing about Lulus.com clothes and accessories?

I love being able to go onto LuLu's and choose an entire outfit! Plus, with LuLu's, I know that I can trust the fabric, the sizes and the overall quality of the pieces.

Do you have a favorite item on Lulus.com?

I recently went on the site and fell in love with the Jeffrey Campbell Buckles Leather Hardware Heel! They're pretty incredible! I'm also completely in love with the Black Eyed Pea Minidress. I might just have to order those! =)

How were you introduced to Lulus.com?

I found out about LuLu*s through my new web series, Miss Behave. All the girls' wardrobes were provided by Lulus.com! Let's just say when it came time to take off my wardrobe, I was very reluctant. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to wear those outfits outside of the show!

How would you describe your style in regards to hair, make-up and clothes? Is there any particular decade that you draw inspiration from?

I'm constantly changing how I do my eye make-up. One day, I'll go all out with smokey eyes and black eye shadow and lots of liner, and the next, it'll be very simple light eye shadow and just a little mascara. I'm also really into anything vintage and try to find pieces from the 40's and 50's that I can modernize a little.

What are some wardrobe basics that you can't live without?

My leather jacket! I wear it everywhere. It's become a huge staple in my wardrobe. I've also fallen into the white v-neck and black skinny jeans trend. It's simple and always looks good!

What fashion trends have you seen recently that you love?

The 2 finger rings! It's such a cool concept and they look incredible! Instead of wearing multiple rings and having it look a bit over the top, you can just wear your 2 finger ring! It's a statement without being too much. I also love all the ruffle collars I've been seeing; very girly and fun!

What is one fashion item you splurge on when it comes to completing your look?

My heels! I'm obsessed when it comes to shoes, especially my heels. I went through my closet and counted how many I had one day and lets just say it ran upward of 80 pairs!

How did you get into acting?

Believe it or not, my singing is what got me into acting! When I was 6 years old, I put on a 12-song show all by myself at the local state and county fairs in Washington state. After one of my performances, a talent scout had asked my parents and I if I had ever tried acting, which hadn't even crossed our minds. My parents signed me up for an acting class and I fell in love with it! I still sing but acting has taken over my life! I really can't imagine doing anything else.

Has being an actress and being in the spotlight made you more aware of clothes that flatter your body?

Absolutely! With all the fittings you have to do when you book a job, it becomes clear what your body can and can't pull off. For instance, I know that most jumpers won't look good on me because of my height and I know that strapless dresses look great because of my shoulders. (They're not too boney and they're not boxy looking.) I think you just have to experiment to truly know how your body handles certain pieces. Not all clothes are gonna look good on you, unless you're Marilyn Monroe, of course.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the fact that I get to go to work and not really feel like I'm working, because I'm truly doing what I love! I love getting in the mindset of someone completely different than me and be able to express how they feel and let that character take over. It's such an exhilarating process.

How has your style changed throughout your career?

Well, since I've grown up in the business, as I mature, so does my fashion sense. I'm getting into the phase of wearing things that can really show off my body while still being really classy.

Are there any celebrities that you draw fashion inspiration from? Who is your biggest fashion influence currently?

I love Sienna Miller's style. I read an interview once where she was asked how she chose this certain dress she wore to an event, and she said she just found it in her closet and threw it on. She pulls off that "I don't really care" look while still looking incredible. She also tends to wear dark colors and that's definitely something I lean towards also. Kim Kardashian is a huge influence lately. I love how she combines sexy and sophisticated!

    Who are your favorite designers?

I've always loved Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and Marc Jacobs! I've also recently become a fan of Zac Posen!

What is a fashion must-have for Spring and Summer?

Your classic short shorts. I've noticed that's a huge must-have on all the hot must-haves lists that have come out lately!

  • Model Off Duty: Frida Gustavsson

    Frida Gustavsson closeup photo

I want to introduce you to one of my favorite up-and-coming models: Frida Gustavsson. This 17-year-old, 5’11” Stockholm native is a self-proclaimed geek, but is a natural on both the runway and on film. In January, she walked for Valentino, Armani Privé, Elie Saab, Christian Dior, and Chanel in spring couture shows in Paris.

Frida is not only a force on the runway, but also off. Below are some example of her laid back, but chic, style.

  • Trend to Try: Jean Shorts + Tights

With spring fast approaching, shorty shorts are hitting the shelves left and right. I put on a pair the other day and decided it was still too breezy outside and by far too early to be showing so much pale winter skin.

That's when I was inspired to pair my favorite black opaque tights with last summer's denim shorts.

The combination is so wonderfully simple. What better way to safely transition from chilly winter weather to fresh and sunny spring mornings?

The expert bloggers pictured here have mastered the whole jean short/tight pairing. I love it best with cut-off shorts or those with a cuffed hem. Paired with a loose top and a crisp blazer or crop jacket, the look is perfectly pulled together.

For footwear, try ankle booties or flats. Also, the addition of a long, chunky necklace adds the perfect finishing touch.

  • Trend to Try: High Waist Shorts

This summer, I'm hoping to add a little retro flair to my warm-weather wardrobe. Retro to me means a high waist, whether it be skirts, pants or shorts. Don't be frightened into thinking that a high waist = mom jeans. When worn correctly, a high waistline will cinch in your middle while creating an overall flattering and feminine silhouette. That's why I was thrilled to see our Short Shorts from Cheap Monday come in last week. With a high belted waist, these dark denim shorts are just ready to be styled up with a pair of cute flats and button up top (not to mention hair tied up with a handkerchief and bright red lipstick).

For styling inspiration, I love how Kiera Knightly has paired a simple collared blouse with her high waist plaid bottoms.

A leggy Audrey Hepburn keeps the look chic with little heels and a plaid shirt.

Zooey Deschanel's outfit goes all out retro with double breasted sailor shorts. The tights are a nice touch in that they make the look wearable for the cool months of spring.

  • Favorites From Fashion Week

Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the fashion industry, as it allows designers to show off their new collections on the runway, and gives buyers a chance to see all upcoming trends. Jill Stuart has been one of my fashion designers for a while and so far for Fall 2010 fashion week, Jill Stuart is once again my favorite.

Moving away from her risque Spring collection of short dresses with studs and spandex, Jill Stuart's Fall collection is full of dark, almost goth looking boyfriend jackets worn over a variety of tight dresses, shorts, and high-waisted trousers.

Take a look at the pictures above for quick peek of Stuart's Fall collection for next year!
