  • RIP the Enfant Terrible of Fashion

"For everyone left behind, there will eventually be consolation, however scant right now, in a body of work whose power will never die." Tim Blanks

Today the fashion and art world mourns the loss of the renowned, acclaimed, fashion genuis Alexander McQueen. From Savile Row, as an apprentice tailor, to LVMH Moët Hennessey Louis Vuitton, McQueen established his career as a fashion designer in all the most awe-inspiring ways.

There are so many things that can be said, and there are so many things that we will dearly miss about waiting on the edges of our seats every season for a new jaw-dropping show from McQueen. McQueen's influence in fashion was viral, and I have personally never made a piece or drawn out a collection without some direct influence or inspiration from McQueen.

I could ramble on about McQueen for days, however, I believe today should be a day to remember and make note of all of your favorite McQueen fashion moments... mine being his latest show, the Spring 2010 Plato's Atlantis. So take the time and ruffle through the archives of the wondrous worlds that McQueen created through fashion design.

"McQueen represented the kind of volatile imagination that transforms clothes into a cultural tapestry, intensely personal therapy and political provocation." Washington Post

  • Grammy Style Favs

Hey, ladies (and whatever gents happen upon our blog)! We have new interns, and they are going to be doing a weekly blog! They split up this week to explore the fashion trends at the GRAMMYS! Read below to see some of their favorite dresses, celebs, and trends. (You'll even see how to find one for yourself!)

    *********

Hey guys, this is Torrey and Michelle and we are two of the new Lulus.com interns. We will both be posting weekly blogs covering topics we find interesting. Check out our blogs and comment to let us know what you think. Hope to hear any comments you have!

Any performer's dream is to one day walk the red carpet of the Grammy Awards. The two most important things for any artist at the Grammys is their acceptance speech and their outfit.

Out of all the dresses that walked down the red carpet at the 2010 Grammy Awards, the elegant backless style worn by Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Rihanna were some of our favorites.  We feel that all three of these artists pulled their gowns off perfectly, showing their back but still showing class.

Like always, Taylor swift looks beautiful in an off the shoulder backless blue gown from Kaufman Franco.

Katy Perry shows off her elegance in a backless beige and gold gown from Zac Posen.

Rihanna looks stunning in a high neck, open back white gown detailed with feathers from Elie Saab Haute Couture.

Hey everyone! What’s up, my name is Lauren and I am a new intern at LuLus.com. I’ll be doing weekly blogs as well so I hope you guys enjoy!

I thought Keri Hilson looked amazing in this dress by Dolce & Gabbana, she definitely was my favorite of the night. Fergie also looked gorgeous wearing a design by Emilio Pucci.

Jennifer Hudson looked stunning on the red carpet in a dress from Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2010 collection. A similar look at Lulus, the Bye Bye Baby Dress [sold out!] makes a statement with a slim waistline and powerful shoulders.

  • MILAN & Menswear!!

This week, Megan from Milan has given us ladies a trend report on menswear. Menswear should be very important to any fashionista, because it will ultimately influence her clothes as well! Detailing in menswear is often used to inspire women's clothing, especially as the tomboy look is becoming more and more popular. So here is what Megan has to say about menswear after watching and following the latest fashion shows in Milan!!

    Reporting from Milano!

This is for all you girls who dress their guys. Here are some trends that I’ve picked up on during men’s fashion week in Milan:

    “Military"

Maybe it was the economic “crisis” that gave men the need to look tidy for all of those job interviews they have to go on now? Or the sudden surge of military styled clothes could just be the very fact that we are living in a warring generation. So why not embrace the silhouette of the uniform?

    “Sports"

This season there has been a particular focus on the skiing/snowboarding look, which was not only popular here in Italy, but also in Norway. I picked up on this growing trend when I was visiting Norway not long ago. The difference being that Norway had this wonderful BRIGHT color trend! This was so happy and uplifting for menswear, which tends to drown in neutrals and dark colors.

A “Softer Look” for your guy!

The fabrics here are drifting from the usual and traditional. More and more funky knits are being used to create classic pieces. This gives your guy a more at ease look.

I find all 3 to be totally different looks, but all great trends to embrace because they symbolize power and strength with a fresh new take! And who doesn’t want their guy to display that?

    Ciao!
    Baci e abbracci!

  • A SPRING Fling with Jason Wu!!

This spring, women around the world are having a fling with fashion designer Jason Wu. Watch the models walk the catwalk below, in his pieces which were created and sewn to fit each and every model!

Jason Wu's Spring 2010 Collection has inspired the masses to adorn lofty, draped, chiffon dresses everywhere and anywhere. For example (below), this wonderful style dress was first seen on the runway at the Jason Wu show, then on Zoe Saldana at the T Magazine Party on Style.com.

And last, but certainly not least, we have the same style of adorable dress, otherwise known as the Conversation Hearts Dress sold out!], at Lulus.com!!

  • Reporting from Milan: Italian Craftsmanship

Here is Megan's newest post from Milan!

But first, below is a picture from the Dolce & Gabbana menswear line for Spring Summer 2010, which featured lots of ripped denim and expertly tailored velvet coats on beautiful men with ridiculously slicked back hair. When viewing Italian fashion, one must remember that Italians have a sense of humor, and they love things to be totally over the top. So if you think it's ridiculous, they probably do too! But you have to love it all the more!

Below this, Megan has attached a picture of a large public statue that is an abstract needle and thread. Milan is a very strong center for fashion and design. Here is what Megan has to say about the tradition of menswear in Milan and Italy.

On the dawn of men’s Fashion Week, Milan is the city to be in!
Here in Italy, men’s Fashion Week is almost bigger than women’s Fashion Week!

With menswear, the changes every season come in the details, and there is rarely anything too drastic. The focus on detail is probably because Italians take great pride with their craftsmanship, and something that I’ve learned from being in Italy is that nothing less than perfection is acceptable.

To further prove this point, I have gotten a closer look into one of Italy’s leading luxury brands.

Because the adherance to detail and craftsmanship applies across the board for all of the Italian luxury brands, I will leave them unnamed, but I got a chance to talk to someone that works as a bag tech designer for a luxury company. He was, as did others in his family, brought up in the trade of leather accessories.

The particular brand that he works for wouldn’t even considering hiring you without an apprenticeship for a number of years. To them, quality is first, always. Italians don't play around with the craftsmanship of their leather goods: handbags, wallets, shoes, etc. They view it as something that is literally "in their blood," and they have to do it right!

So for this upcoming Milan men’s Fashion Week, I hope you definitely check out all of the details! If you find yourself in Milan for Fashion Week, check out the schedule, throw on some sunglasses and lipstick (celeb status), and try to get into the shows!

    Ciao, Baci

  • Fashion Week Update: PARIS & Plato's Atlantis

Yesterday, at the Alexander McQueen show in Paris, the long-lost Plato's Atlantis was discovered.

McQueen has set a standard for himself within the industry that has yet to be rivaled by other fashion masters. The theatrics involved, both in the clothing and in the stage, are always breathtakingly complicated and fanciful. The Spring 2010 show was, by all means, the ULTIMATE McQueen show, and he successfully transported his audience into an otherworldly experience.

The show's hype began with the fact that he announced that the show would be broadcast live along with a pre-made video and Lady Gaga's release of her new single on showstudio.com. However, the hype -- while magnificently important to the fashion industry and online business -- ended up being the demise of the project itself!

Lady Gaga twittered that her new release would be out on SHOWstudio, and instantly her million-something fans logged on and brought down the site! Despite all of this, the show went on and was a magnificent arrangement of music, video, performance, and fashion.

FYI, please make a note that this collection must be viewed as a wardrobe complete for aliens from a planet yet to be discovered...

  • Fashion Week Update: MILAN

Unfortunately, this round of Fashion Week in Milan had little that caught my attention. I was looking forward to reporting for you guys all the neat and sweet fashion stuff from Milan, but alas, there was practically nothing to talk about!

One thing I did find at least entertaining and fun was Dsquared². (We do have to remember that although this is supposed to be a presentation of clothing, a fashion show is also just that -- a show!) Dsquared² is the line/work/baby of Dan and Dean Caten. They are twins from Canada that have made it big in Milan. The Italians simply adore them.

In Milan, Dean and Dan had their warehouse and offices in a building directly behind the street that I lived on. Every Friday became the Dsquared² Aperitivo (basically the Italian happy hour) at a super posh bar called BOND. BOND was almost directly across the canal from my apartment and I could check out what they were wearing, which was way too much fun, especially with designers as funky and cute as these two!

The twins have quickly made an outstanding reputation for themselves by throwing their fashion shows in such a way that the audience is totally entertained.

For instance, the first Dsquared² fashion show that I went to started out as a scary alley in an old European city, like London. A lone model walked out cautiously with a cape, SUPER high heels and pouty red, red, red, lipstick on. Some of the models ended up throwing off her high heels and running down the runway.

The second show I saw was the Spring/Summer 2009 men's show, and it was just as great! It opened in a barbor shop complete with my hip hop dancing friends the BANDITS, and the two chairs whirled around to reveal Dean and Dan themselves who began the show by walking down the runway!

The Spring/Summer 2010 show begins in a campground and is a completely ridiculously styled camping look, with super-skinny high fashion models trying to look as if they are camping?! At least we can see, through the mess of crazy clothes and layering, a few super-cute pieces and layering ideas!
