  • Vintage Hair: The Beehive

I had so much fun with this look, and it definitely makes a statement.

You'll need to give yourself a little extra time in the morning and have plenty of bobby pins on hand (not kidding). The result is totally worth it! Sixties vintage for a new look!

    What You'll Need:

    1. A homemade "Bumpit" (made from hair extensions wrapped in a hair net) - make sure it matches your hair color.

    2. Fine Tooth Comb

    3. Hair spray

    4. Flower or decorative hair clip

    5. Bobby pins

    What To Do:

    1. Part hair into three sections: Front, Middle (largest section), Back. Tie each into a pony tail

    2. Pin your homemade "bumpit" securely behind the middle section.

    3. Pin the back ponytail up to cover the "bumpit."

    4. Take the middle section out of ponytail an pin down over the hive of hair. This part should look smooth and flawless.

    5. Untie the front section, make a sideways part and sweep hair softly across the forehead. Pin in place.

    6. Hair spray EVERYTHING.

    7. Pin a cute flower or clip on the side of the hive.

Before you begin, you must watch the tutorial below by Strawberry Koi Vintage that inspired this look. This is where I found the great homemade bumpit idea, and she's got plenty more handy tricks and tutorials on her YouTube Channel and blog. Check her out!

  • Yummy Peach Pie Smoothie

I love having the Food Network as background noise whenever I'm cleaning my room or checking emails. It's soothing to me in a funny way.

My favorite show to watch is Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger. I love how she uses healthy ingredients in every recipe and tells you a little bit about their nutritional value. It just makes you feel good about what you're eating.

This weekend, she made a Peach Pie Smoothie that was just too delicious looking to ignore. I pretty much went straight to the grocery store to pick up the ingredients.

    Here's what you need:

    • 1/2 cup nonfat or 1 percent lowfat milk
    • 1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt
    • 1 cup unsweetened frozen peaches
    • 1 tablespoon honey, plus more to taste
    • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • Pinch ground nutmeg
    • Pinch ground ginger

Blend all the ingredients in a blender and enjoy. If you're like me, you'll add a little whipped cream (or Soyatoo) and a straw for a heavenly concoction.

This smoothie has the essence of peach cobbler with plenty of added health benefits. Perfection. I'm now keeping those frozen peaches on hand for those lazy autumn days.

  • Halloween Look 3: Gorgeous Geisha

Okay, okay ... just one more Halloween look idea before the festivities of the weekend.

Today's video once again comes from the talented Michelle Phan (because she's just awesome). This time we have a very unique and artistic geisha look.

I love how inventive this look is. I've never even thought about putting pink eyeshadow on the outer corner of the eye. The effect is gorgeous! Definitely a must see.

  • Vintage Inspired Hair: Rockabilly Updo

So I'm trying out this new little project that includes finding a cool vintage hairstyle, giving it a try on my own locks, and then posting my findings on our blog with a pic. I've always loved hairstyles from the 40's, 50's and 60's, so to be able to actually pull them off with minimal talent in the hair styling area is very exciting.

YouTube was, once again, a great resource for me. There are tons of cute pin-up style tutorials for makeup and hair from individuals who have studied the looks and perfected their own method. I hope you are inspired as I was!

    Look 1: Rockabilly Updo.

This is the perfect hairstyle if you haven't washed your hair in a while, you need a break from heat styling, or you just feel like looking different and a little pin-up. Here I am (just chillin' in the Lulu*s breakroom).

    What U Need:

    Handkerchief: $1.50 (Michael's Craft Store)

    Fine Tooth Comb

    Hair spray

A bumpit or cheap extensions bundled in a hair net (anything to boost volume at the crown)

Bobby pins, bobby pins, bobby pins.

    Steps:

Tease a section of hair at the forehead and pin it so that it bumps up.

Gather a separate section from behind both ears and pin up and over your bumpit or hair net

Pin that thing like there's no tomorrow and make sure the net/bumpit is completely covered

Gather the rest of the hair into a pony or bun.

Smooth any flyaways with hair spray

Roll up a square handkerchief and tie into a bow at the top of the head

    Voila!

Before you get started, I highly recommend watching the tutorial below from retropinup13. This was the awesome tutorial that inspired my look.

    XOXOXOXO,

    Kathleen

  • Halloween Look 2: Snow White

Okay, ladies, Halloween is drawing near. Do you have your costume planned out yet?

Well, if you're running low on time and ideas, you have to give this little video a look. One of my new favorite YouTube makeup gurus, Michelle Phan, has put together a gorgeous tutorial on the classic Disney Snow White look.

Even if you already have your costume in mind, this video is still worth a view. I love the way she really embodies Snow White.

Didn't we all want to be a Disney princess at some point? Maybe this Halloween is your big chance.  :)

  • Pumpkin Skincare

During this time of year, we pick pumpkins for decoration, carving, and baking pie ... so why not use them in our beauty routine?

Pumpkins are rich in beta-carotene, which gives them their intense orange color. This anti-oxidant powerhouse does wonders for your skin, including protecting your skin against sun damage, evening skin tone, and giving you an overall healthy glow.

Now that the weather is turning, the elements can be even harder on your skin. If you're feeling a little cracked and dry, treat your skin to a little PLC (Pumpkin, Love and Care).

For the ultimate skin treat, I love to use GreatSkin® Pore Refining Pumpkin Mask. Not only does this mask exfoliate your skin, but as you rub it in, it heats up and relaxes the face. It's like having an expensive facial right at home. Can't beat that.

And if I'm feeling a little creative in the kitchen, I'll whip up the scrub recipe below found on Care2.com. It's so easy and simple, and hey, we all have these ingredients in our cupboards anyway.

    Pumpkin, Sugar, and Spice Scrub

    • 1/2 cup cooked or canned pumpkin, pureed
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1. Combine ingredients in a bowl.
    2. Stand in a tub or shower stall and use a damp washcloth to scoop some of the mixture up.
    3. Apply to body, starting with your feet and working your way up, but avoiding your face. Scrub gently using circular motions.
    4. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

So head on down to the pumpkin patch -- or the canned goods aisle -- and get in on the fun. It's like a pie in the face, only more relaxing.

  • The Perfect Cat Eyeliner

Watching too many episodes of Mad Men has got me going retro, not only with the growing collection of vintage dresses and skirts in my closet, but with my beauty routine as well. Suddenly, I'm looking into modern-day spins on the beehive (blog post to come), bold red lips, and now, black-lined cat eyes.

The trick to the perfect cat eye is a steady hand, which many, like myself, lack when it comes to precision. So, practice a couple of times and have plenty of Q-tips and makeup remover nearby if you mess up.

Also, invest in a good quality eyeliner. There are many different forms to choose from, including liquid, pen and gel. If you're first starting out, I'd opt for an easy-to-use pen, such as MAC's Penultimate Eyeliner. After a couple weeks, you'll feel more comfortable with gel and liquid and the intense pigment that they offer.

To start off your cat eye, make a flick (however long or short you want) from the outer corner of your eye and angling up. With your pen or brush, start from the inner most corner of your eye and carefully draw out and up to that flick, making the line thicker as you go.

For a visual demonstration, click the tutorial below brought to you by the lovely Sarah Victor for expert guidance (and subscribe to her channel already!)

With a few tries, you'll be the cat's MEOW!

  • Makeup Look: Jewels for the Eyes

If you're looking to play up your eyes for Halloween, a night out, or just for fun, you have got to give the new Estee Lauder Sumptuous Color Mascaras a go!

Ok ok, so they're a little pricey, but for $19.50 apiece, you'll be getting the best quality colored mascara out there. The intensity of the pigment is amazing, and it wears surprisingly nice and elegant, not cheap. The website gives you instruction on which shade goes best with your specific eye color:

    Blue Eyes = Emerald

    Brown Eyes = Amber

Green or Hazel Eyes = Amethyst or Garnet

    All Eyes = Sapphire

As a blue-eyed gal, I'm looking forward to using the Emerald mascara combined with a subtle chestnut smokey eye, and after watching the tutorial below, I just need to get my hands on the Sapphire. It's simply gorgeous!
