How to Wear Bright Eye Makeup: 2 Ways to Nail Summer’s Biggest Beauty Trend

Bright eye makeup is one of our favorite beauty trends of 2019: it’s fresh, impactful, and best of all, fun (as makeup should be). Adding vivid hues into the mix is easier than you think–and we’re outlining two foolproof ways to nail the trend.

It’s tough not to feel an instant mood boost from a pop of bold color, which might be why celebrities from Selena Gomez to Lupita Nyong’o to Madelaine Petsch have all been spotted in colorful eye makeup looks. This trend has caught on in a major way–and summer is the perfect time to give it a try.

Not sure you can pull off bright eye makeup? We beg to differ. Feast your eyes (ahem) on the purple eyeshadow and electric blue eyeliner looks ahead, then follow the simple steps to try out this trend for yourself.

Purple Eyeshadow

An easy way to rock the bright eye makeup trend: Cover your lids in highly-pigmented lavender eyeshadow (we used NYX Professional Makeup Brights Ultimate Shadow Palette). Keep the rest of your makeup subtle and natural if you want to stand out without going overboard.

Instructions

Step 1: Use a flat brush to be able to pick up more of the product and pack it onto the eye more easily.
Step 2: Once you have the pigment at your desired intensity, go back in with a fluffy brush to make sure everything is evenly blended and that there are no harsh lines or edges. Leave the outer edges slightly lighter in pigment and make the center of the eye the most concentrated.
Step 3: Highlight the inner corner to brighten; this also helps keep the eye from looking closed off.

Blue Eyeliner

We’ve seen everyone from Sophie Turner to Gabrielle Union rock this look on the red carpet. For instant impact, pop your eyes with cobalt blue eyeliner (we used Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner).

Instructions

Step 1: Start by concealing the eyelid and then defining the crease with a similar skin-toned or warm brown eye shadow shade.

Step 2: Create the shape across the top lash line, then add the wing after. To help the liner go on smoother, warm up the product (typically on the back of the hand) then go in with a thin angled brush. Make sure you get your product as close to the lash line as possible, afterward creating the desired thickness.

Step 3: After the top lash line is filled in, use the natural upward curve of the bottom lash line into the outer corner of the eye as a guide to creating the initial line for the wing. Starting from the upper outer corner of the eye, sweep up going towards the brow bone. Once the wing is to the desired shape and size, go in and clean up the liner with concealer to make sure it is a clean sharp line.

Step 4: To complete a winged liner look, add either individual eyelashes or extra mascara. Big lashes help open the eyes and compliment a winged liner look.
