But lately, veganism and plant-based eating, in general, seem to be topics of conversation in broader circles. The buzz around the 77th Golden Globes was partly due to its first-ever vegan menu to create awareness around climate change, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Game Changers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a documentary about the high performance of plant-based athletes hit Netflix last year. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.veganuary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Veganuary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, originally a UK-based campaign to encourage people to go vegan in January (and beyond) received a US push, providing resolution-seekers an option instead of&#8211;or in addition to&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/5-dry-january-hacks-that-will-get-you-through-the-month\/\">Dry January<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If there\u2019s one group that deserves some time in the spotlight, it\u2019s plant-based foods. There are countless benefits to plant-based eating, on both an individual and global level. See? Your mom was right after all about making you eat your veggies! Read on for why you should stop pushing them to the side of your plate&#8211;and how to actually enjoy them.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235704\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/tach.j.jpg\" alt=\"woman in red dress in front of outdoor plants\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1249\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @tach.j<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>It\u2019s not a new trend.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even though it may seem trendy, \u201cplant-based eating is not a trend, it\u2019s been around forever,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/djblatner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DJ Blatner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, RDN, <\/span><a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daily Harvest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nutritionist, and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Flexitarian-Diet-Vegetarian-Healthier-Prevent\/dp\/0071745793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Flexitarian Diet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cHowever, it definitely is picking up mega-mainstream momentum in 2020. It\u2019s more popular than ever because it\u2019s easier and tastier to do than ever before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She notes that there are a growing number of plant-based options in grocery stores and restaurants that actually taste good, as well as food delivery companies like Daily Harvest that ship plant-based smoothies and bowls directly to your front door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even fast-food chains are on the bandwagon, offering plant-based meat alternatives (though not all are vegan). Burger King and White Castle have Impossible burgers on their menus; Carl\u2019s Jr. and McDonald\u2019s both have Beyond Meat options. Gone are the days where eating vegan or vegetarian meant getting served what essentially looked like a plateful of garnishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235702\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235702\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/jayleeclarkee.jpg\" alt=\"plant based eating: woman on counter cutting fruit\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1249\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @jayleeclarkee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The benefits of eating plant-based go beyond the body.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main motivation for most people to adopt a more plant-based diet is health, and there\u2019s the important added bonus that it\u2019s good for the planet too,\u201d says Blatner. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even just a month of plant-based eating, according to Blatner, can lead to benefits such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increased energy and better digestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Decreased mind fog and improved sleep quality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Better mood and increased confidence with new habits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clearer skin and possible weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although more research is needed to show the impact of plant-based diets on long-term health, there are some promising studies. A 2019 study published in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/JAHA.119.012865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of the American Heart Association<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">showed that plant-based diets are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. In another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/09\/190930101521.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2019 study by the University of Nottingham<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, researchers found that by cutting your red meat consumption by half, you can reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in your blood and effectively lower your risk of heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, any significant positive changes in health markers associated with plant-based diets\u2014like lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides\u2014don\u2019t happen overnight. Blatner says those\u00a0can take about three to six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235703\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/noellevenegas.jpg\" alt=\"woman in black dress walking through apple orchard\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1249\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @noellevenegas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eating plant-based also has larger impacts on the environment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an October 2019 report published in <\/span><a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s (PNAS), researchers found that focusing diets on foods associated with positive health (whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes) could also have a lower environmental impact and thus help meet international sustainability goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This is obviously simplifying a much larger problem and would require more than just your average person eating more vegetables\u2014e.g., systemic shifts in nutrition and diets across the world would likely be required. But any progress is good progress&#8211;a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nd it\u2019s a nice bonus that eating healthier also means eating more sustainably.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235706\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235706\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/theluxilook2.jpg\" alt=\"woman at a table outside plant based eating\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @theluxilook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Just because it\u2019s plant-based or vegan, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s automatically healthy.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note there\u2019s a difference between being plant-based and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/recipes\/vegan-mac-and-cheese-recipe\/\">vegan<\/a>. Vegan excludes all meat, poultry, fish, and animal products such as eggs, dairy, and gelatin. Plant-based diets emphasize plants as the main foundation of eating, while allowing for meats and animal foods as a smaller portion of meals. Different types of vegetarians may also abstain from meat but eat dairy and eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The key to seeing benefits from a plant-based diet is to make sure you\u2019re doing it correctly. Blatner says, \u201cM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">any times going plant-based means people aren\u2019t eating enough plant-protein or they are choosing too many faux chicken nuggets &amp; burgers. And the most important part of plant-based is eating lots of fruits and vegetables!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235716\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ashleyinthemidst2.jpg\" alt=\"veganuary: woman in yellow sweater with butterfly braid and oranges \" width=\"1000\" height=\"1247\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @ashleyinthemidst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Technically, many types of potato chips are vegan, but that doesn\u2019t give you free rein to endlessly snack on them. When shopping for plant-based foods, Blatner advises to read nutrition labels and ingredient lists and avoid foods that have CRAP: Chemicals you don\u2019t use in your kitchen; Refined flour and sugar; Artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners; and Preservatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blatner also mentions that if you do choose to go full vegan, it\u2019s possible to experience nutrient deficiencies. She says to pay particular attention to your levels of p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rotein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, omega-3 fats, and B12. When in doubt, consult a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-235700 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/beauty-foods-blog13265-resize.jpg\" alt=\"veganuary 101 beauty foods\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1250\" \/>\n<h2>Should you buy organic?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ah, the age-old organic vs non-organic question. Blatner focuses on the fact that people don\u2019t eat enough fruits and vegetables (in a survey done by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.daily-harvest.com\/s\/the-veg-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daily Harvest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 72 percent of Americans said they did not eat fruits and vegetables every day). \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So don\u2019t put major pressure on yourself and wallet to buy organic, the first step is to just start buying &amp; eating more produce&#8230; conventional or organic,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She points to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/foodnews\/dirty-dozen.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EWG\u2019s dirty dozen list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which ranks which fruits and vegetables are most contaminated with pesticide residues and thus you may want to buy organic when possible. The latest list includes strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, and potatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-235705\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/thedressychick.jpg\" alt=\"woman at a table eating plant based\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-235705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @thedressychick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>It\u2019s easy to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even if you don\u2019t go full-vegan, focusing on more plant-based foods in your daily life is easier than you think. Here are a few tips to start with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Start small. \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try one new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/diy-2\/cheesy-vegan-pumpkin-pasta\/\">plant-based recipe<\/a> each week,\u201d suggests Blatner. \u201cThat way at the end of the year, you will have tried 50+ new things\u2026 some of which you will love &amp; will become part of your regular rotation!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Have easy options on hand.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cKeep quick plant-based options stocked like Daily Harvest. I always have Daily Harvest smoothies, soups, and harvest bowls in my freezer so I can grab a nourishing fruit &amp; veggie based meal in minutes,\u201d she says<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Don\u2019t forget the protein. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stay full by including plant-proteins in meals and snacks. There are plenty of options such as beans (garbanzo, black, edamame), lentils, nuts, seeds, nut or seed butters, tempeh, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/diy-2\/vegan-jade-rice-sushi-recipe\/\">tofu<\/a>.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Eat veggies you like.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Life is too short to eat bad food. It\u2019s okay to not like vegetables that everyone else likes. Keep an open mind, and try things several times and in different ways to find what suits your personal tastes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Don\u2019t be afraid to go frozen.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Frozen produce can often be healthier than fresh produce. Fresh produce is often harvested before it\u2019s ripe (i.e., before peak nutrition), ripens in transit to stores, and can contain chemicals or preservatives to maintain freshness. Frozen produce, on the other hand, is often allowed to naturally ripen, then frozen immediately after, locking in nutrients.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Have questions about plant-based eating or Veganuary?
