On top of all the other historic, unforgettable things to happen in 2020\u2014Coronavirus, Australian bushfires, Brexit (and Megxit), murder hornets, UFO videos, just to name a few\u2014we also have a major election. And just like how the pandemic<\/a> has upended most things in life, it has also already started to impact the general election. Because of concerns around crowds at polling places and the spread of COVID-19, as well as a shortage of poll workers, people are looking to mail-in voting as be a safer alternative to in-person voting.<\/p>\n

Never done mail-in voting before? Or simply need a refresher? Here\u2019s what you need to know to make sure your ballot is counted this November.<\/p>\n

Mail-in vs. Absentee Voting<\/h2>\n

Mail-in voting and absentee voting are often used interchangeably. Depending on the state, they may refer to the same thing. Absentee voting<\/a> usually applies to people who can\u2019t be physically present to vote on Election Day (e.g., if you\u2019re overseas or ill), while mail-in voting is broadly the process of casting ballots via mail. So absentee voting is a form of mail-in voting, but not all mail-in voting is absentee voting. Also, technically, you don\u2019t have to literally mail in your ballot–but more on that later.<\/p>\n

Due to the pandemic, many states are changing their rules to make it easier to vote absentee. That means more people than ever will be allowed to vote by mail. However, despite the increased attention around it, absentee voting isn\u2019t a new thing; it\u2019s been around since the Civil War to allow soldiers who were fighting away from home to cast their votes.<\/p>\n

Mail-in ballots go through a system of checks to be validated, and despite claims, there is little evidence that voter fraud, either in-person or via mail, exists. Studies, government investigations, and courts have all agreed that voter fraud is rare<\/a>. One report<\/a> even stated, \u201cVoters acting on their own have no rational cause to vote fraudulently. The odds of casting a deciding vote are miniscule and cheaters risk criminal prosecution under state laws on the books for decades. The costs of fraudulent voting are steep and the benefits practically non-existent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who is eligible for mail-in voting?<\/h2>\n

First and foremost, you must be registered to vote! Forty states plus DC<\/a> allow for online voter registration.\u00a0 Register here<\/a> or check your registration here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Every state allows for mail-in, absentee voting<\/a>, but the rules vary by state. Some require an excuse to vote absentee, some don\u2019t require any excuse, and some automatically send you an absentee ballot if you\u2019ve voted absentee in past elections. In five states (Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington), ballots are automatically mailed to every eligible voter. This year, in California<\/a>, governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order that in addition to in-person polling places, every registered voter will receive a mail-in-ballot prior to the general election in November.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also important to be mindful of both absentee ballot application and submission deadlines, since receiving and sending in an absentee ballot takes longer than showing up to a polling place on Election Day. If you receive an absentee ballot but still want to vote in-person, you may be able to, depending on your state. Every vote counts towards the election, regardless if it\u2019s in person or by mail, as long as you follow the appropriate rules and deadlines.<\/p>\n

How and when do you turn in your mail-in ballot?<\/h2>\n

One way to send in your mail-in ballot, as the name implies, is through the mail. If you\u2019ve been paying attention to the news, you\u2019ve probably heard more talk about the mail and buying stamps. For starters, the US Postal Service is in a dire financial situation, due to the decline in overall mail volume as well as a law passed by Congress in 2006 that requires the USPS to pre-fund 75 years of employee pension payments, costing the agency billions of dollars.<\/p>\n

Due to an anticipated surge in mail-in ballots this year, the USPS sent letters to 46 states<\/a> saying they could not guarantee all ballots sent via mail would arrive in time to be counted for the November election. However, two USPS execs also penned an op-en in USA Today<\/em><\/a> saying the postal service is prepared to handle the uptick in election mail, saying they deliver around 425 million pieces of mail any given day, and that election mail will account for less than two percent of that volume.<\/p>\n
