We\u2019re tired of isolating in our homes, tired of juggling work and other responsibilities. We&#8217;re tired of being bombarded by bad news 24\/7 and tired of the general uncertainty of what the future holds. There\u2019s a name for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-crime-and-justice-doctor\/202008\/crisis-fatigue-and-the-covid-19-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">what we\u2019re all feeling<\/a>, crisis fatigue, which is defined as \u201chuman response to unrelenting stress that can cause a person to feel physically numb or tired.\u201d Sounds about right.<\/p>\n<p>You may have also noticed it\u2019s hard to escape stories about egregiously bad behavior by others, whether it\u2019s related to the pandemic, racial injustice, or just basic human courtesies that seem to have been forgotten during this time. Are we collectively becoming a society of jerks? Or have we always been jerks and are just starting to notice it in quarantine?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_241957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-241957\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-241957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/khris_bajis.jpg\" alt=\"blonde woman in a hat and knit matching set waiting on the sidewalk with crossed arms\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1349\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-241957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @khris_bajis; Featured: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/products\/lady-light-green-knit-tank-top\/1252796.html\">Lady Light Green Knit Tank Top<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/products\/lady-light-green-drawstring-knit-shorts\/1252856.html\">Drawstring Knit Shorts<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitypsychiatry.com\/providers\/julian-lagoy-m-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Julian Lagoy, M.D.<\/a>\u00a0 a psychiatrist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitypsychiatry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community Psychiatry<\/a>, our circumstances are partly to blame. \u201cWhen people become more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/re-entry-anxiety-tips\/\">stressed out<\/a> due to things like the current global pandemic, people start to show their true self and personality,\u201d he says. \u201cUnfortunately, for some people, that is acting badly and disrespecting others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people live in a civil, law-abiding society and low-stress environment, they tend to act more civilized. Whereas if you place the same people in a lawless and very stressful society, like a war zone, you will notice that people will change their personality to reflect the situation they are in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the decreased amount of social interaction probably isn\u2019t helping. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/socially-distanced-baby-shower\/\">social distancing<\/a> is important to contain the spread of COVID, there are mental and physical impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs humans, we are meant to be social creatures,\u201d says Dr. Lagoy. \u201cHumans who have more friends and are more social tend to be healthier and have a better overall well being than humans that are isolated. There are also plenty of stories of people banding together to drive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/staying-engaged-in-anti-racism\/\">social change<\/a>, or even individuals performing small acts of kindness.<\/p>\n<p>For example, John Krasinski\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCOe_y6KKvS3PdIfb9q9pGug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SomeGoodNews<\/a> was a show dedicated to only good news. It even included an episode with the cast of <em>The Office<\/em> reuniting for a couple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/virtual-wedding-ideas\/\">Zoom wedding<\/a> as well as a virtual ceremony for 2020 graduates with A-list speakers like Malala Yousafzai and Oprah Winfrey. Other Instagram accounts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/upworthy\/\">Upworthy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/goodnews_movement\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good News Movement<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/humansofny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Humans of New York<\/a> can all give you a daily dose of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/inspirational-instagram-accounts\/\">feel-good content<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Creating a more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/emily-mcdowell-empathy-cards-and-types-of-courage\/\">empathetic<\/a> environment starts with yourself. Try to detach yourself from the news<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re paying attention to the news, you\u2019re likely completely consumed by it, especially now that we\u2019re all at home surrounded by multiple screens. Dr. Lagoy advises his patients to try to retain a degree of inner peace, however possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell [my patients] that there are some things they can control and other things they cannot; worrying about the things they cannot control is not going to solve any of their problems. Detaching to a degree from things that one cannot control is a helpful way to cope with the uncertainty right now,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>One way to detach from the news is to just consume less of it. Practice self-care<\/h4>\n<p>We already know our minds and bodies are inundated with stress, so take time to do something just for you. It\u2019s not selfish, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/beauty\/self-care-beauty-routine\/\">self-care<\/a>. Get outside<\/h4>\n<p>There has been research that has shown the mental health benefits of spending time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/15-best-nature-and-wildlife-instagram-accounts\/\">nature<\/a>, and one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2019.00722\/full#h5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> showed that having a 20-30 minute dose of nature helped to decrease stress levels. Going outside\u2014while social distancing from others\u2014is a way to break up your day, get away from your computer, and breathe some fresh air. Do your best to not judge others<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to read the news and make quick judgments as an outside observer. But Dr. Lagoy reminds us, <em>\u201c<\/em>All we can do is control how we act and the actions we take as individuals. We are the experts and masters of our own lives. Remember that we\u2019re all in this together<\/h4>\n<p>Everyone keeps saying these are unprecedented times, but remember that this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/telehealth-care\/\">pandemic<\/a> is global, and even though countries and individuals are all experiencing it differently, we\u2019re still all experiencing it together. Some time in the future, we\u2019ll look back at 2020 as the year we all persisted through a once-in-a-century pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of how people treat you and how you may disagree with the choices of others, it is still important to try and understand others\u2019 difficult situations in order to overcome the judgmental thoughts you may have,\u201d says Dr. Lagoy. And the golden rule still applies. \u201cIt is easy to treat others well if they also treat you well, but it is more virtuous and noble to be kind to those who treat you badly or with less respect than you give them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are you coping with crisis fatigue?
