You want to make your shots memorable but not cheesy, authentic to you as a couple, effortlessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/13_449\/casual-dresses.html\">casual<\/a> but slightly posed, and an experience that\u2019s fun and not stressful. Then there\u2019s the location, to pose or not to pose, and of course, your engagement photo outfits, which will likely be commemorated in a framed photo in your (and your family\u2019s) home for years to come. If you\u2019re looking for inspo, we\u2019ve asked a few engagement photographers for their best tips to capture <em>both<\/em> of your best sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What and Where and How:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Make your shoot interactive.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erinmcginn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erin McGinn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a wedding photographer in Rhode Island, suggests capturing an activity you and your partner love to do together to make your photos both fun and meaningful. That can be anything from eating pizza on your porch and reading in bed, to riding bikes on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/2442\/the-vacation-shop.html\">beach<\/a> or hanging out with your dog. If you want help staging the scene, McGinn says to ask your photographer for stylists they already work with. \u201cThey can pick the best blueberry basket for your pancakes or find you the softest linen sheets for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/1866\/intimates-and-sleepwear.html\">bed<\/a>,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Make the shoot part of a date night. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McGinn suggests making your engagement shoot part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/2178\/night-out-dresses.html\">date night<\/a> (or day date) so you have time to enjoy yourselves before taking photos. Instead of trying to squeeze a shoot in between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/819\/office-chic.html\">work<\/a> or errands or other to-dos, take the time to enjoy each other\u2019s company. \u201cThe more romantic you&#8217;ll be feeling with each other already, the more it will shine through in the images,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_247083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247083\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ri_wedding_photographer05.jpg\" alt=\"a couple kissing on the couch with a guitar for engagement photos\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-247083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Erin McGinn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Embrace the light. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Photographers are experts at finding the right light, so work with yours to determine the best time of day for whatever location you\u2019ll be shooting in. McGinn says she personally loves shooting at Golden Hour for an outdoor shoot, but other examples include finding the time of day where your home is the most well lit if you\u2019re shooting at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/99_2346\/home-novelty.html\">home<\/a>, or maybe sunrise in the mountains where you\u2019ll get sun but not shadows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Make your shoot your own, and no one else\u2019s. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone\u2019s preferences and experiences will be different, so skip asking all your friends about their shoots and go into your own with preconceived notions, says McGinn. Instead, she suggests building a relationship with your photographer because after all, you hired them for their skillset.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_247079\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247079\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-247079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/keepingitoly3.jpg\" alt=\"a couple wearing fancy engagement photo outfits sitting on a stone wall\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1234\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-247079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @keepingitoly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What to Wear for Engagement Photos:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t fake it. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When choosing engagement photo outfits, be true to your style instead of finding something you\u2019d never wear because it\u2019s pretty or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/trending\">trendy<\/a>, advises McGinn. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/13\/dresses.html\">dress<\/a> for the activity you\u2019re doing \u2014 don\u2019t wear a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/13_837\/bodycon-dresses.html\">bodycon<\/a> dress hiking or fancy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/179_42\/high-heels.html\">heels<\/a> for a breakfast in bed shoot. \u201cSometimes juxtapositions can be super fun (think eating at a pizza parlor in a tuxedo!), but if it doesn&#8217;t feel like you, you&#8217;re going to be uncomfortable and it will show in the photos,\u201d adds McGinn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Choose clothes that give you confidence. \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is without a doubt the most important consideration when it comes to your choice of outfit,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.potoksworldphotos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anji Martin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a DC-based wedding photographer who owns a wedding and engagement photography services company with her husband. If you wear something you feel confident in, that will show through in the photos. She suggests picking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/1538\/top-rated.html\">tried and true<\/a> outfit that shows off your favorite features and downplays any that you may be insecure about.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_247081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247081\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247081\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ri_wedding_photographer04.jpg\" alt=\"a couple climbing ladders for bookshelves in engagement photos\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-247081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Erin McGinn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Wear something you\u2019re comfortable in. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re not suggesting to pull on your favorite pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/4630\/loungewear.html\">sweatpants<\/a> (unless that\u2019s your shoot theme). \u201cThe ideal choice of outfit for an engagement photo shoot is one that you forget you even have on,\u201d says Martin. You don\u2019t want to be constantly fidgeting or adjusting your clothes throughout the shoot. Marin adds that uncomfortable clothes, and especially uncomfortable shoes, can also limit your choice of location.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Show up for yourself. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/paunveiled.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thomas Beaman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a wedding photographer and planner, advises dressing like the best version of yourself. \u201cThere is nothing wrong with dressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/5156\/weekend-ready.html\">casual<\/a> for your session, but make it the nicest version of casual as possible,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nix the bright colors. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s a time and place for color, but your engagement photos might not be in. \u201cAs fun as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/753\/brights.html\">bright colors<\/a> are, they often wash out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/5821\/naked-collection.html\">skin tones<\/a>, can be very distracting, and often clash with the landscape,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/briannaparksphoto.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brianna Parks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an elopement photographer based in California. Instead, she recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/685\/neutral.html\">neutral<\/a> colors as they never go out of style, always match the landscape, and are very flattering in pictures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_247077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247077\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/photo-by-@gina.paulson.jpg\" alt=\"a couple poses in engagement photo outfits wearing a floral dress and hat and a button down in the woods\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1250\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-247077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @gina.paulson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Pick colors that complement what your partner is wearing. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin says engagement photos will be more visually pleasing if the colors of your and your partner\u2019s outfits go well together. By pairing well together, that doesn\u2019t mean going for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/2242\/two-piece-sets.html\">matching<\/a> outfits, which Martin advises against. Adds Parks, \u201cThe matching outfits won&#8217;t look good in a few years, and the pictures can end up looking corny.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid bright white. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beaman advises staying away from bright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/883\/white.html\">white<\/a> shirts if possible. \u201cYour eye is typically drawn to the brightest spot in a photo. If that spot is your entire bright white shirt, it\u2019s what you and others will notice first in the photos,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_247085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247085\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-247085 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/via-@becca_rizzo-.jpg\" alt=\"a couple embracing for engagement photos in a parking garage outdoors\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1249\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-247085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via @becca_rizzo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Accessorize. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin suggests bringing in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/99\/accessories.html\">accessories<\/a> to get variety in your pictures. \u201cPutting on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/99_230\/hats.html\">hat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/99_133\/scarves.html\">scarf<\/a>, different piece of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/categories\/99_100\/jewelry.html\">jewelry<\/a>, watch, or other new element can transform your outfit into something entirely distinct without a wardrobe change. And even if you are able to change your outfit, having those accessories will still be a nice way to jazz things up during the session,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bring at least one change of clothing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you have time to do an outfit change, Martin says to bring another set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lulus.com\/womens-clothing\">clothes<\/a> for more variety in your engagement photos. Hint: \u201cPutting on a new outfit halfway through can literally allow you to get two photoshoots&#8217; worth of pictures for the price of one,\u201d she adds. A second outfit can also serve as a backup plan. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bringing two different engagement photo outfits will not only spice it up, but it gives you leeway in case one of the outfits didn&#8217;t look as good as expected!\u201d says Parks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Did these tips help you?
