Few hairstyles are more iconic than Barbie’s perfectly coiffed ponytail. With the Barbiecore aesthetic being one of this summer’s hottest trends, being able to pull off her smooth, swoopy style is the finishing touch for your best pink outfit.

Part of this hairstyle’s timeless appeal is how smooth and elegant yet playful it is. The flipped-up ends make this pony look like a styled blowout. Little touches like a wrap of hair hiding the tie and a hidden claw clip elevate the high ponytail to something that’s fun yet sophisticated with a retro vibe.

Depending on your natural hair texture, you may want to start this style after taking a straightener to your hair, which will make it easier to get the perfect flip and swoop. But even if you don’t have time to go to the salon for a blowout, you can easily pull off a Barbie-inspired ponytail of your own. Here’s how to do it!

Barbie-Inspired Ponytail

Supplies:

  • Paddle brush (for detangling and smoothing)
  • Large hair tie
  • Soft-bristled brush (for teasing; can also be used for smoothing)
  • Small claw clip
  • Hair straightener or curling ron
  • Alligator clip
  • Hairspray

Instructions:

Step 1: Part your hair in a deep side part.

Step 2: Pull your hair into a high ponytail with a large hair tie, but leave out the front section.

Step 3: Wrap the ponytail with a small section of hair. Pull it through the hair tie at the back to hide the hair tie.

Step 4: With a soft-bristled brush, tease the ponytail and smooth over the top.

Step 5: Insert a small claw clip under the base of the ponytail at the back to add volume.

Step 6: Bend the ends of the hair out with your hot tool (you can use a straightener or curling iron) and brush through.

Step 7: Drape the front section across the front of your hairline and pin it under the ponytail. Use an alligator clip to hold it in place while you’re securing your hair.

Step 8: Finish with spray and a brush to smooth down all parts of the style.

And that’s it! You’ll have a perfect Barbie-inspired ponytail with swoop in no time at all. Now get out there, think pink, and have fun with this playful style!
