At one point or another, almost every one of us has thought about cutting bangs. Whether we’ve actually done it, though–well, that’s a different story. Trying out the newest hair trend isn’t for the commitment-phobic, especially when it requires a major chop. But, then again, is a chop actually required? Can you fake bangs?
The answers are, respectively, no, it doesn’t, and yes, you can. This year, several different styles of bangs are trending, from ‘70s-inspired curtain bangs to voluminous side-swept ’90s-esque looks. And, as it turns out, you can take the trend for a test drive. Ahead, see three step-by-step tutorials for how to make fake bangs with your own hair. No cut necessary!
Face-framing curtain bangs are long enough to pull back when desired, making them super versatile and flattering. The idea is to add a little layering and volume in the front, almost like you’re in the midst of growing out your fringe.
Step 1: Part your hair down the middle
Step 2: Use a flat iron to straighten the hair on both sides of the part, pulling straight down in one large section. Secure at the root to cool.
Step 3: Curve each side away from the face, drape, and secure with an alligator clip.
Step 4: Once the hair has cooled, release the clips and add some medium-hold hairspray
This year, side-swept bangs are back in full force, and it’s easy to see why. The look is timeless and can work with various hair lengths.
Step 1: Create a deep side part.
Step 2: Use a flat iron to straighten in the direction the hair will lay.
Step 3: Drape and secure the hair with a bobby pin above the ear. Tuck the hair behind the ear and pull the remaining hair over to cover.
Bangs don’t have to be straight-across fringe. Full, bouncy, ’90s-Y2K hair is one of the year’s top beauty trends, so adding a face-framing, faux bang only ups your style points–and softens your face.
Step 1: Curl all of the hair except the front section with a 1.25in barrel; direct the curls away from the face.
Step 2: Curl the front section away from the face. Then, secure that curl with an alligator clip or Velcro roller to cool.
Step 3: Once cool, release the front section and tousle with texture spray.
