8 Expert Tips to Face Roll For Flawless Skin at Home

Face rollers may be the latest go-to beauty gadget, but unlike other trendy tools, this one actually lives up to the hype. Not only are face rollers affordable, but they’re also surprisingly accessible, making them the perfect gizmo for getting glowing skin at home.

“If you wake up puffy, or just need to ease tension, it’s a really easy tool to use,” says Hollywood skincare expert Sonya Dakar, whose famous fanbase includes everyone from Sophia Bush to Gwyneth Paltrow. “You can’t mess it up! Home micro-needling and other invasive tools can be tricky and damage skin if done incorrectly. I call rollers ‘skin-friendly,’ meaning they are easy on the skin.”

If you’ve never used a face roller before, these small handheld tools are used to reduce swelling and inflammation, as well as improve lymphatic drainage, ease muscle tension, decrease puffiness, and stimulate blood flow to give your skin a healthy glow. Face rollers and can be made of a wide variety of materials including jade, quartz, onyx, or crystals, to name a few.

“Let’s just begin by saying that rollers feel great on your skin,” says Dakar. “The stone is naturally cooling, and the smooth roller makes it easy to apply gentle pressure all over the face. It’s nice to keep in the fridge for an added cooling effect. Rollers can decrease puffiness, increase blood circulation, temporarily smooth and sculpt skin, help products penetrate deeper, and help with under-eye circles. They can also help with lymphatic drainage, especially if you wake up puffy.”

How to Use a Face Roller

1. Start with cleansed and exfoliated skin. This way, whatever serums you use will penetrate better into your skin.
2. Apply your face serum, moisturizer, and then a good face oil or face balm. (“I love the Organic Omega oil and Blue Butterfly Balm for some slip,” says Dakar.)
3. Make sure to do face rolling upwards and in one direction. Never roll up and down. You always want to lift the skin and not drag it down.
4. Repeat up to five upward rolls in each area. First, roll outwards under the jawline.
5. Next, use the face roller to roll out towards your hairline, under the cheekbones, and then along the sides of them.
6. Lastly, roll flat along the brows and then upwards on the forehead.
7 Work more slowly over the neck and jawline. Be brisk to firm all over.
8. Flip the tool over to use the smaller attachment under your eyes in a horizontal motion toward the hairline.
