Prom is a rite of passage but as we all know, it can get pricey. At Lulus, we don’t think anyone should miss out on this milestone event due to high costs, which is why we’re making sure as many babes as possible are outfitted in style this year–for free.

January

We sent off nearly 4,000 dresses to the Vida de Oro Foundation 2nd Annual Prom Dress Giveaway. This Sacramento, California event ensures every teen in the community who wants to attend prom can find their perfect look for the big night, cost-free. Making high school’s biggest bash inclusive of all? Well, we think that’s about as chic as it gets.

Vida de Oro Foundation’s mission is to promote arts in education and enhance the community. Learn more about their 2nd Annual Prom Dress Giveaway here:

Additionally, we’ve shipped over 1,500 dresses and 135 pairs of shoes to Becca’s Closet. With over 65 chapters nationwide, this organization collects and distributes dresses to high school girls with financial need, as well as offering scholarships and prom tickets.

Becca’s Closet was founded in honor of late Davie, Florida teen Becca, who singlehandedly collected and donated over 250 prom dresses to girls across South Florida before she passed away in 2003. The organization’s mission is to keep her dream alive.

Lulus donated 300 dresses and 40 pairs of shoes to the Van Nuys, California chapter, 450 dresses and 55 pairs of shoes to the organization’s Rockford, Illinois chapter, and 310 dresses and 40 pairs of shoes to the Columbus, North Carolina chapter.

February

Continuing our mission to outfit deserving babes for prom, we donated 480 dresses to Georgia chapters of Becca’s Closet in Buford, Covington, and Douglasville, as well as 275 dresses to the organization’s Niagra Falls, New York chapter, and 60 dresses to the Cape Girardeau, Missouri chapter. Also sent: 80 dresses to the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida chapter and 375 dresses to the Pompano Beach, Florida chapter.

We also sent 225 prom dresses sent to the Chapel Hill, North Carolina chapter of Cinderella’s Closet, as well as 290 dresses to the Coalport, Pennsylvania chapter. Additionally, 275 dresses were donated to the Danridge, Tennessee chapter, 140 dresses to the Laguna Beach, California chapter, and 420 dresses were sent to the chapter in Independence, Kentucky. At press time, 350 more dresses were sent to the organization’s Eaton Rapids, Michigan chapter and 180 dresses went to the Paducah, Kentucky chapter.

Inspired by a chance encounter at a consignment store with a teenager and her foster mom who couldn’t afford to buy a prom dress, Cinderella’s Closet was founded in 2006 in Lakeside Park, Kentucky. The goal: to provide dream dresses (and renewed confidence) to deserving girls in the community. Today, the efforts extend to 11 states and every spring, hundreds of referred juniors and seniors are able to score new and gently-used formal dresses and accessories, completely free of charge.

March

We’re not done yet! The Glasgow, Kentucky chapter of Cinderella’s Closet was sent a donation of 150 Lulus dresses in early March. The Leeds, Alabama chapter of Becca’s Closet was sent 900 dresses, while the Colorado Springs, CO chapter was shipped 415 dresses. Whew!

Additionally, 405 dresses and 200 shoes were sent to The Glass Slipper Project in Chicago, Illinois. One of the United States’ first charitable prom organizations, The Glass Slipper Project is an entirely volunteer-run non-profit that collects new and like-new formalwear for high school juniors and seniors. Dresses, jewelry, and accessories are distributed for free at “boutiques” each prom season, where “personal shoppers” help students find their perfect prom looks.  The Glass Slipper Project has helped dress more than 20,000 young women for prom since 1999.
