For many, the island of Sardinia is still relatively unknown, but it is definitely one of Italy’s top travel destinations. The island is ablaze with color and warmth. It is an explosion of colors, perfumes, and breathtaking views; a place where you can experience a magnificent Italian holiday, drinking good wine, and eating delicious pasta and gelato.

Sardinia captivates with its wild hinterland, out-of-this-world beaches, and endearing eccentricities: Here, coastal drives thrill, prehistory fascinates, and four million sheep rule the roads (!). For ideas on where to go and things to do, check out my Sardinia travel guide ahead.

Best Beaches in Sardinia

Sardinia beaches are some of the dreamiest you’ll find on European shores. Its snow-white sands and bluer-than-blue seas are often likened to the Caribbean. Some of the best beaches in Sardinia are Cala Goloritze and Cala Mariolu, or La Maddalena archipelago, where you’ll find a myriad of stunning beaches. Tip: Always check the wind! There are beaches where the sea is not the best if the Mistral wind is blowing.

Where to Go: Romantic Cagliari

At the far south of the island, you will find Sardinia’s capital, Cagliari. It’s a vibrant, unpretentious city with its own beach, il Poetto, some wonderful restaurants, and gorgeous cafés. Up in the medieval Castello district, you’ll find the best view of the city.

Bastione di San Remy is an iconic, charming spot in Cagliari. You can’t say you’ve really seen the city if you didn’t visit the Bastione! It is one of the most romantic places in the city, especially at sunset, and the whole atmosphere is simply awesome.

From here you can see the most breathtaking view of the city–and you can find some of the best restaurants (Pani e Casu is my favorite). It also has direct access to the old Quartiere Castello, the oldest and the most authentic part of the city.

What to Eat in Sardinia

We had several great meals in Sardinia. Something very typical is a paper-thin, crispy bread called carasau–it is absolutely addictive! We always drank a simple Vermentino di Sardinia, a dry, cool white wine that’s locally produced and very delicate.

I finished every meal with one of the best desserts I’ve ever had in my life, seadas: fried dough filled with pecorino cheese and covered in honey. I was in absolute love with this dessert (can you blame me?)!

What to Pack for Sardinia

If you pack only dresses and bikinis for two weeks in Sardinia, you’d be set: The weather is quite hot during summer and you will not need long pants. There are plenty of vibrant restaurants and cafes where you have you aperitivo (kind of like happy hour with hors d’oeuvres) and a dress would be perfect for an afternoon stroll around the charming streets of Sardinia. Buon viaggio!
