When preparing for a hike, the clothing you choose can greatly impact your comfort and safety. By dressing appropriately and knowing what to pack, you’ll be ready for a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience. Above all else, the key to a successful hike is to stay safe and have fun; hiking well-prepared is the best way to do that.

What to Wear on a Hike

Layers

  • As a base layer, a moisture-wicking top is an excellent choice for hikers, even in cooler or cold temperatures. Short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts, depending on the weather, will help to keep you cool and dry. Remember, you are expending energy when you’re hiking, even when it’s cold outside: You will sweat, and moisture-wicking clothing will help to ensure that you’re comfortable throughout your hike. Materials such as synthetic polyester or natural merino wool are great for hiking.
  • A middle layer may come in handy for cool-weather hikes and if you plan on hiking after dusk. A lightweight fleece pullover is easy to roll up and put in your pack or secure to the outside of it. This layer of insulation should also be breathable. A down or synthetic down jacket could be added for additional warmth, depending on the weather.
  • Your outer layer should be sturdy enough to protect you from the elements. Make sure it’s waterproof and breathable. A rain jacket or slicker or even a disposable poncho should be kept in your hiking pack in case you get stuck out in the rain. It’s best to hike in lightweight, moisture-wicking, quick-drying pants or shorts. Convertible pants, ones that zip off into shorts, are a versatile choice.

Hiking Footwear

Wearing the proper footwear is critical to your safety and enjoyment. Socks should be moisture-wicking and light-colored; light-colored material makes it easier to find ticks that might latch on as you hike. The shoes you choose to hike in should be broken-in, closed-toed, and sturdy, with good ankle support and solid grip. Hiking sneakers with deep treads are helpful, but you can also add traction spikes to shoes that need additional tread.

Gaiters, protective coverings that can be worn over the tops of hiking boots, are good to add to your list of hiking apparel. They help protect against mud and debris, help to keep your pants and feet dry, and act as a barrier against ticks and insects.

Hiking Headwear

To protect your head from the sun, wind, or cold, choose appropriate headwear. A wide-brimmed, well-ventilated hat is great for hiking in the summer and can be paired with a bandana to help manage sweat. A knit cap is appropriate for colder weather.

What Not to Wear on a Hike

As you dress for your hike, prioritize function over fashion; there’s nothing worse than being out on the trail after having not dressed properly for the activity. Focus on comfort and performance over what looks good.

Avoid moisture-absorbing materials. It might sound counterintuitive, but moisture-absorbing materials such as cotton and denim are slow to dry, become heavy when wet, and contribute to hypothermia when temperatures are cold enough. Non-breathable rain gear should also be avoided, as it can become very hot and muggy underneath, causing discomfort and sweating.

Ill-fitting footwear should be left at home. Hiking in improper footwear is uncomfortable at best, causing blisters and foot pain. At its worst, the wrong footwear can be dangerous. Never hike in open-toed shoes, as it is highly unsafe and can lead to injury.

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Clothing

  • Weather Changes: Check the forecast, and prepare for unexpected changes by packing extra layers or rain gear.
  • Temperature Regulation: Start with fewer layers to avoid sweating, and add layers as you cool down during rest breaks.
  • Protection From the Elements: Wear sun-protective clothing, and cover extremities in cold weather to prevent heat loss.
  • Comfort and Mobility: Choose stretchy, lightweight fabrics that allow a full range of motion, and avoid clothing with rough seams or tags.

Hiking Accessories and Additional Gear

In addition to the clothing you wear, a few key accessories can enhance your hiking experience. A good pair of sunglasses can be very helpful in both summer and winter. If you are hiking during colder months, wearing insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens is important; put a second pair in your backpack as well.

Carrying a lightweight, well-fitting backpack is essential, as it’s the perfect way to bring along what you need to stay safe and comfortable as you hike. In your backpack, you should bring:

  • Identification
  • Phone, fully charged
  • Car keys; lock the rest of your keys in your vehicle
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Trail snacks
  • Sunblock and bug spray, to be applied at the trailhead
  • A basic first-aid kit
  • An extra layer or two
  • An extra pair of socks
  • A mini flashlight
  • An emergency blanket
  • A compass
