What to Wear to a beach wedding

Beach weddings are some of the most fun nuptials to attend–the ocean breeze, the vacation vibe; it’s all just so romantic and festive at the same time.  Perhaps the least enjoyable part of receiving a shorefront wedding invite, though? Figuring out what you’re going to wear.

Finding dresses for beach weddings can be trickier than others for a variety of reasons: Formality, terrain (ie: sand), and weather all factor into your decision.  You want to look stylish and appropriate but you also want to be comfortable–so we simplified the process for you. Read on for your complete (head-to-toe!) guide to dressing for a beach wedding.

Formality

Not every seaside nuptial has a laid-back dress code. When searching for dresses to wear to a beach wedding, considering the formality level of the occasion is key.

Casual

Casual beach  weddings are typically daytime events, so anything from a sundress to a flowy maxi or even a jumpsuit is acceptable. Play around with patterns like stripes, boho prints, or  florals, and stick to lighter colors and fabrics to keep cool. It's still a wedding, so skip typical beach attire like t-shirts, denim shorts, and rubber flip flops!

Semi-Formal

For semi-formal shorefront vows, a cocktail or midi-length dress is perfectly appropriate. The ceremony will most likely be held in the late afternoon or evening, immediately followed by the reception, so you’ll want to opt for a style that’s a little dressier.  Look for dresses in elevated fabrics like lace or chiffon, and consider colors that are a little richer, especially if the wedding is in the evening.

Formal

A formal beach wedding calls for a full-length gown or elegant midi dress. To beat the heat and mind the dress code, look for sleeveless styles and airy, lightweight fabrics. You can always up the glam with sweat-proof extras like sparkly earrings or embellished heels.

WEATHER

We can’t talk about shopping for dresses to wear to a beach wedding without also talking about prepping for beach weather.  Mother nature can be unpredictable: Stifling heat, heavy winds (that blow sand everywhere), evening temperature drops, and–especially in tropical destinations–storms can come out of nowhere.

Our advice? Be prepared for anything. Check the forecast ahead of time and always bring a fashion contingency plan.  If a heatwave is predicted, be sure to choose a lightweight, breathable dress. Bring sunglasses  in case of sandy wind gusts and a light wrap or shawl in case of cool coastal breezes or rain.

Shoes

In general, shoes with flat soles are almost always a smart option. Flat sandals are ideal, as they can move easily from the sand to a dance floor–not to mention, they’re comfy! If you’re looking for a little extra height, consider wedge sandals–they’ll give you the same boost as heels, without sinking into the sand or getting caught between wood planks on a dock or boardwalk.

ACCESSORIES

Accessorizing might be one of the most fun parts of dressing for a beach wedding. Even the simplest summer dress can be elevated by festive jewelry or a standout bag. For tropical weddings, have fun with tassel earrings, colorful bangles, or an embroidered woven clutch. Try polished gold baubles and a basket or net bag for a more coastal vibe.
