So if you’ve been poking around fashion TikTok lately, you’ve likely come across what’s set to be one of the year’s biggest trends: Parisian Ballet. This aesthetic is actually a combination of a few different styles, with influences from–you guessed it–ballerina wear, as well as Parisian street style, and the mid-2000s “Twee” trend. Overall, the vibe is kind of like playing dress-up–with a little extra edge. And well, who doesn’t feel like getting dolled up these days? Here’s what it’s all about:

Shop the Look: So Much Yes Black Suede Over the Knee Boots

Ballet-inspired pieces have been trending for a while now. Whether the look is an evolution from athleisure (dance is a sport and an art, y’all), an homage to the return of the Sex and the City gang, fueled by the desire for something beautiful and fantastical, or all of the above, “Balletcore” is sticking around. And what’s not to love? Taking center stage (ahem): pretty fabrics like tulle, satin, and sheer organza, lace-up details, new takes on ballet flats, poufy “cupcake-style” dress shapes, shrugs, and cropped cardigan sweaters.

Shop the Look: Made to be Magical White Dotted Tie-Back Tiered Midi Dress

Sounds pretty traditionally girly, right? Right. “Babydoll” details like bows, ruffles, lace, tall socks, pearls, and headbands are a key component of the Parisian Ballet aesthetic–with lots of that inspiration coming from street style. The cutesy/hipster “Twee” trend from the mid to late 2000s plays a big role here, as well. So what does twee mean exactly? Merriam-Webster defines it as “affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute, or quaint.” Think Zooey Deschanel; ’60s and ’70s inspired bow neck tops, shift dresses and tights, and ballet flats.

Shop the Look: Pleasantly Sweet Blush Knit Tie-Back Sweater

There’s plenty of sweetness and whimsy in this aesthetic, but childish it’s not. Details like bustier and corset tops, lace-ups, platform soles, and black accents add the necessary dose of sultry and edge. If you’re ready to take the Parisian Ballet trend for a spin (or a pirouette perhaps?), scroll on to shop the look.
