Published by
Lulus

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 through October 15, is a time to honor the vibrant histories, traditions, and cultural contributions of the Latinx community.  From the ways they infuse their heritage into fashion to the traditions that keep them connected to their roots, these Lulus creators are showing us how culture and personal style go hand in hand. Ahead, discover how they celebrate their heritage and how their unique backgrounds continue to shape their style journey.

Yovana Ayres, 36

Lulus: Can you share a little about your cultural background or heritage?

Yovana Ayres: I’m Mexican, both of my parents are from Tijuana, Baja California. I was born in San Diego but lived in Tijuana until I was 9, growing up in a Mexican household.

Later, when we moved to the U.S., I was surrounded by a new culture, but at home, we always kept our Mexican traditions alive. Even now, living away from my family, I stay deeply connected to my roots and heritage.

Lulus: What makes you proud of your heritage?

YA: Definitely our traditions and the way family is at the center of everything. Food, gatherings, and the warmth we share with others are such an important part of Mexican culture. Mexicans are known to be happy, welcoming, and full of life, and I feel proud to carry that with me wherever I go.

Lulus: How has latinx culture influenced your style?

YA: I’m naturally drawn to vibrant colors, playful patterns, and rich textures. There’s so much joy and movement in Latinx culture, and I love how it encourages individuality and creativity in style. For me, it’s about celebrating that vibrancy in everyday life.

Nadia Lynn Garcia, 26

Lulus: Can you share a little about your cultural background or heritage?

Nadia Lynn Garcia: I am the child of a Honduran-born mother and Mexican-born father–I was born into huge families on both sides. Both of my parents immigrated to the United States young and navigated their new lives in the US while never letting go of their culture, sharing it with our family.

Latino culture is community-based, emphasizes taking care of each other and working hard to be the best version of yourself, for yourself and others. Through my culture, I’ve learned to be very loving, caring, and grateful for all of the opportunities and relationships I have in my life. Nothing is taken for granted!

Lulus: What makes you proud of your heritage?

NLG: I’ve never been prouder to be the child of immigrants. When my mom was 9, she immigrated from Honduras to California with her siblings and our grandmother. At 20, my dad immigrated from Mexico to Texas. Without the sacrifices they made, adjusting to new countries, learning new languages, and building lives in the United States, I would not be where I am today. They are two of the most hard-working people I know.

My mom is a dedicated healthcare professional who gave my twin brother and me endless care and knowledge, and my dad is a proud business owner building his own empire across Texas, showing us that you can start and build success for yourself. From both of them, I learned the joy and value of hard work, the importance of believing in yourself, and the courage to never stand in the way of your own dreams.

Lulus: How has Latinx culture influenced your style?

NLG: Latinos love to have fun, be bold, and be loud. Every day is a celebration, and I love to incorporate that into my style! I’m not afraid to wear different patterns, materials, shapes, or colors. Fashion is one of my favorite ways to express myself, and I find new ways to challenge the norm every time I step out of the house. I’ve always been taught to be so proudly myself–and I will continue to do that through my style.

Bryanna Ruiz, 23

Lulus: Can you share a little about your cultural background or heritage?

Bryanna Ruiz: I come from a proud Latinx background that’s deeply rooted in family, tradition, and community. Growing up, I was surrounded by vibrant celebrations, delicious food, and the importance of staying connected to my family and where we come from.

Lulus: What makes you proud of your heritage?

BR: What makes me most proud is the strength and passion that runs through our culture. There was such a strong sense of unity, joy, and creativity growing up, even in the little things, like how we celebrate milestones or share a meal. This is a culture that always finds a way to bring people together; even if you’re not blood-related, you’re still treated like family.

Lulus: How has Latinx culture influenced your style?

BR: Latinx culture has definitely influenced the way I express myself through fashion over the years . I love bold colors, statement pieces, and mixing modern trends with timeless touches that remind me of my roots. My style often reflects that balance of confidence, vibrancy, and individuality that I saw in my culture growing up.

Sofia Bella, 28

Lulus: Can you share a little about your cultural background or heritage?

Sofia Bella: I come from both Mexican and Cuban roots. My dad is from Mexico, and my mom’s side is Cuban and Mexican. Even though my mom grew up in Vegas, she made sure our home was always filled with culture–whether it was music blasting while we cleaned, big family meals, or just the way we celebrated everything. It’s a mix I’m really proud of because it makes me me.

Lulus: What makes you proud of your heritage?

SB: Honestly, the heart, the humor, and the way family is everything. Latinos know how to turn even a regular dinner into a celebration, and that’s something I love. I grew up in a family where gatherings were the highlight of everything- whether it was a holiday or just a Sunday dinner, it always felt like a party.

That’s why I love hosting now; it’s how I keep that same family dynamic alive. I’m proud of how resilient and joyful my culture is–you can feel it in the way we dance, laugh, cook, and even just talk with our hands. It’s loud, it’s warm, and it’s beautiful.

Lulus: How has Latinx culture influenced your style?

SB: Being Latina gave me the confidence to dress bold and bright. I love color, I love pieces with personality, and I love adding that little bit of flair and sass to whatever I’m wearing. That’s what I think is so beautiful about our culture–we express ourselves without holding back. My style is playful, feminine, and loud in the best way, and I definitely owe that to my heritage.

Erika Michelle, 32

Lulus: Can you share a little about your cultural background or heritage?

Erika Michelle: I was born in Ecuador, raised in Spain, and moved to the U.S. when I was sixteen. Growing up between cultures gave me a unique perspective—I was surrounded by Latin traditions at home and Spanish influences in my everyday life, and later I experienced American culture. All of those layers shaped who I am today.

Lulus: What makes you proud of your heritage?

EM: I’m proud of the warmth, resilience, and joy that run through both Ecuadorian and Spanish culture. Family and community are at the center of everything, and that’s something I carry with me wherever I go. It’s made me value connection and celebrate life’s little moments.

Lulus: How has Latinx culture influenced your style?

EM: Watching the women in my family get ready for celebrations with bold lipstick, gold jewelry, and beautiful fabrics left a big impression on me. Now I love to blend timeless, neutral pieces with striking colors or statement accessories. It’s my way of honoring my heritage while keeping my style modern and uniquely mine.
