The ’90s High Ponytail is Back–Here’s How to Do It Yourself!

The high ponytail was a go-to hairstyle for ’90s babes: Supermodels and celebs alike all regularly rocked the I Dream of Jeannie-esque sky-high pony.  Today, it appears the hair look is poised for its big comeback, as stars like Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Ashley Graham, and Kylie Jenner are all rocking the trend. Thanks in large part to celeb hairstylist Danielle Priano, who is all about a ’90s ponytail, I’m feeling this throwback style all over again.

Below, I’m showing how you can do your own sleek high ponytail at home. Don’t forget to flip those ends under for extra retro vibes–and get ready to channel your inner Gen X It-girl.

Step 1: Start with second-day hair. The leftover oils from the day before will help provide a bit of grit for your ponytail.

Step 2: For added volume, add your favorite hair extensions. Place them upside down to blend them in with your ponytail.

Step 3: Using a comb, section off a side part. Keep a small section of your bangs out to later tuck behind your ear.

Step 4: Secure the rest of your hair with a hair tie. For the most flattering ponytail, you’ll want the base to line up with the arch of your brow.

Step 5: Next, take a small piece of hair from the ponytail and twist it around the base, covering the hair tie. Secure this with a bobby pin, making sure to hide it underneath!

Step 6: Grab a large curling iron, about an inch and a half, and curl the bottom of your ponytail. Make sure to position the barrel so that your curls are going under instead of out!

Step 7: Now set your look and tame flyaways with your favorite hairspray. Feel free to add a volumizing spray or powder to add volume to your ’90s  pony!
