As hairstyles go, the ponytail can get a bad rap. Often written off as a basic look reserved for working out or lazing around the house post-work, this easy updo is actually an MVP style: simple enough for those of us with amateur-level skills to achieve, but with major versatility. So think beyond the gym and the couch–all it takes is an extra step or two to take your pony from basic to bangin’, meaning you can easily rock a refreshed version of the classic anywhere from the office to an evening event. So how to dress up a ponytail? We enlisted Lulus ambassador Deana Duka to show 5 simple, chic ways to do just that. These easy ponytail hairstyles ahead are about to up your beauty game.
1. Wrap a section of hair around the ponytail holder
This is one of the easiest ways to instantly upgrade your pony. Put your hair in a high ponytail, then take a small section of hair from the bottom of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic or holder. You can secure with bobby pins and hairspray.
2. Elevate a simple low ponytail with embellished hair clips
Hair clips are having a major moment. Adding oversized pearl barrettes–try doubling up for extra dramatic effect–is an elegant and on-trend way to dress up a ponytail.
3. Leave loose tendrils of hair in front
Before putting your hair in a ponytail, keep a few ’90s-inspired tendrils loose to frame your face. The idea is to achieve a tousled, easy ponytail hairstyle that doesn’t look sloppy.
4. Try a textured braid

How to wear a ponytail braid without looking childish: add texture! Pulling at this loose, semi-low plaited pony gives it an edgy, intentionally-messy effect that’s all grown up.
5. Add a hair scarf

A hair scarf ponytail just feels fresh, flirty, and totally spring-ready. Silky options in patterns like bandana print, leopard, stripes, and more ensure this look stays sophisticated and not overly sweet.
