For many of us, figuring out how to wear a crop top can be a challenge, but midriff-baring shirts are actually surprisingly versatile. With everything from stretchy fitted versions to boxy cropped sweaters on offer now, the half-shirt options are plentiful, as are the styling possibilities. In short (pun intended), there’s a way to work the look that works for you–promise. And if anyone knows how to put together a chic crop top outfit, it’s the queen of crops–and our partner on the @joandkemp Fall Edit–Kemper Baugh.
Styling a crop top look comes down to several factors including your personal style, skin-baring preference, and where you’re headed in the look. That said, there are a few tried-and-true tricks Kemper turns to, and she’s sharing them ahead. Scroll on to get crop top outfit tips from the longtime Lulus babe–and see how easy it is to wear the trend your way.
1. Pair Your Crop Top With a High-Waisted Skirt or Pants

Wearing a crop top doesn’t mean you have to bare your whole midriff, Y2K style. Show just a sliver or less by meeting your teeny top where it’s at with high-rise jeans, pants, or a skirt. “Although low-rise bottoms are in, I have found that pairing high-waisted bottoms typically creates a more flattering silhouette for most body types,” notes Kemper.
2. Layer It Under a Blazer, Cardigan, or Shacket

Styling a crop top with a cardigan or lightweight topper allows you to better control how much skin you’re baring–and gives you options. “Blazers and shackets are some of my favorite layering pieces for cooler weather,” says Kemper. “If I’m wearing a skirt, it helps me to have a little more coverage all around, and I can easily peel it off when indoors.”
3. When in Doubt, Go Monochromatic

Want to keep your crop top outfit sophisticated? Stick to one color, says Kemper. “To me, nothing is more classy and chic than a monochromatic look,” she notes. “Any color is good, but all black gives such nice lines and always makes me feel a little taller.” And don’t be afraid to go there by adding more pieces of varied textures in your preferred hue.”With monochrome, the more layers, the better.”
