As a bride-to-be, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’d want my wedding makeup to look like. I don’t want to be under so many layers of makeup my future husband doesn’t recognize me as I walk down the aisle. And, I can’t be bothered with being self-conscious about a bold lipstick color getting on my teeth, or heavy eye makeup smudging down to my cheeks throughout the day.
That’s why I’m such a fan of a more natural, minimalist approach to bridal beauty. The aim is to complement–not camouflage–your features and pick a timeless beauty look. One thing that never goes out of style? Blush.

It’s hard to imagine a “blushing bride” without blush. The soft pink tones are virtually synonymous with brides–I immediately think of Kate Middleton with bright pink on the apples of her cheeks on her royal wedding day in 2011 (fun fact: she reportedly did her own makeup).
Another trending take I’ve been loving is monochromatic blush makeup, as seen on actress Yara Shahidi at the 2021 Met Gala. With a matching rosy shade on her lids, lips, and cheeks, she gave off a soft, romantic makeup look really fitting for a bride.

Using one makeup product all over (especially if you decide to DIY, a la Duchess Kate) makes things really easy. But aside from simplifying things, when you wear one color, what you’re wearing really shines. Go ahead, show that wedding dress off!

If you are inspired to try out the monochrome blush look, follow the wedding makeup tutorial below!
Monochromatic Makeup
Instructions:
Step 1: Starting with your base and brows done, apply blush high on your cheekbones for a lifting effect. A stick blush is recommended, but this can also work with any cream or liquid formula.
Step 2: Blend with your fingers or a brush upwards toward your temples.
Step 3: Apply the blush to your eyelids and blend with a blush. For more color payoff, pat the blush on with your fingertips.
Step 4: Swipe on the blush on your lips like lipstick. For a finishing touch, add lip gloss.
