Calling all PNMs! If you plan on Greek life as part of your college experience, you need to know what to wear for sorority rush. Sorority recruitment isn’t like picking a dorm; it’s a whirlwind week of events, each with their own dress code. Part of joining a social group like a sorority is knowing how to fit in with that group–and that means knowing what to wear. But don’t think that sorority rush requires a uniform!

You want to show off your own aesthetic and personality. It’s a great exercise in learning how to meet a dress code while still staying true to yourself, which is a useful skill to have. Each round of sorority rush has a different level of formality, and you want to look your best for all of them. So let’s take a look at the rush process and some sorority recruitment outfits, and see how it all lines up with your wardrobe.
What Is Sorority Rush?

Sorority rush, also known as recruitment, is a process where college women explore the various sororities on campus to find the one that best aligns with their values, interests, and personalities. Every sorority is different, and you want to find the one that’s the most supportive and fun for you.

This process typically consists of several rounds, each with a specific focus and dress code. Before the formal rounds begin, you’ll have an Info Session where you’ll get all the details about Greek life to decide if it’s right for you. The first round, often called Open House, is the most casual and involves brief, informal meetings with members of each sorority. The second round, known as Philanthropy round, is slightly more formal and focuses on each sorority’s charitable initiatives. Next is the Sisterhood round, where potential new members learn about the sisterhood and traditions of the sororities, requiring semi-formal attire. The final round, Preference Night, is the most formal and intimate, as potential new members (virtually always referred to as PNMs) attend an invitation-only event to make their final decision. Each round helps both the sorority and the potential new members determine the best mutual fit.
The first step in these events? Understanding the dress code for rush week outfits.
Understand the Sorority Rush Dress Codes

Before you start shopping, you need to understand the dress code for sorority rush at your specific school. Different schools and even different sororities within the same school may have their own expectations. For example, Ole Miss and the University of Alabama are known for the size and scope of their sorority recruitment, while sororities like the Divine Nine have unique traditions that set them apart.
So how do you know what to wear? First, check out your school’s official sorority and Greek life websites. Most schools have an official Greek life website that provides detailed information about the rush process, including dress code guidelines.

But the official websites are going to be more informational than inspirational. To really get a good handle on what you should be wearing, follow the sororities you’re interested in on social media. Instagram and TikTok are two of the best places for examples of outfits–look for rush-specific hashtags like #SororityRush, #RushOutfits, or #RecruitmentStyle.
Also, you can always ask. Sororities are social groups, after all, and having these conversations with your potential big sisters can help you bond! Ask upperclassmen who have already gone through it. They can help you with outfit ideas and give you advice on picking out clothes for rushing sororities.
Sorority Rush: What To Wear?

In order to pick the best outfits for rush week, you need to think beyond the dress code. Think of your rush outfit as needing to meet three criteria. First, are you comfortable? Do you like it? Don’t rush into rush in an outfit you hate or that isn’t comfy! Second, does it meet the dress code? And third, is it practical? You might have the most gorgeous black velvet maxi, but rush happens in late summer/early fall–you don’t want to roast alive! Keep these tips in mind when choosing dresses to wear for sorority rush.
Consider the Weather

The weather can significantly impact your outfit choices. Know the average temperatures for the time of year when rush takes place. This will help you decide whether you need lightweight dresses or something warmer. Be prepared for rain by having an umbrella or a cute raincoat.
If it gets cool in the evening, consider lightweight cardigans or stylish jackets that can easily be added or removed. And make sure your shoes are appropriate for the weather. Closed-toe shoes might be more comfortable if it’s cold, while open-toe sandals can be great for warm weather.
Prioritize Comfort

You’ll be spending long hours meeting new people and walking around, so comfort is key. Choose breathable fabrics. Cotton, linen, rayon, and many synthetics are breathable and can help you stay cool and comfortable. Steer clear of heavy or non-breathable fabrics that might make you sweat.
Choose Supportive Shoes

When it comes to footwear, comfort and support are key. Flats, wedges, or low-heeled sandals are often better choices than high heels; you’ll be on your feet quite a bit. If you’re shopping for something new, be sure to break them in ahead of time—blisters are the last thing you want during rush week.
Mix and Match Accessories

Sorority rush doesn’t have to break the bank! While each event may call for different attire, smart styling is all about versatility. Think of your accessories as your secret weapon: mix, match, and reuse pieces you already own to make each outfit feel uniquely you. Keep jewelry minimal and refined—after all, you want them to remember your charm, not just your statement necklace. And yes, re-wearing your shoes is totally fair game (and totally chic).
Easy Breezy Bags

When it comes to your bag, a small crossbody or clutch is perfect. You want something that can hold your essentials, but nothing that will be cumbersome. Also, if you want to be everybody’s new best friend, tuck a small fashion emergency kit into that bag. Somebody will need a safety pin, fashion tape, blister pads, or a Tide pen. If you’re the girl who’s got those emergency needs, it’s a guaranteed positive impression.
Now that you’ve got an idea of the basics, let’s look at the four main rounds of rush and get some outfit ideas!
Before The Rounds: What To Wear For Your Sorority Rush Info Session

First things first: Before you even decide to rush, you should definitely attend a sorority informational session. Here, you’ll learn about sororities, meet recruitment counselors who can help you through the process, and decide if Greek life sounds right for you. Info sessions or meet-and-greet events are the beginning of the membership intake process–-so naturally, that begs the question: What do you wear?
Overall, you’ll want to look casual but polished, and always like you. Nice jeans, pants, or a midi skirt, a blouse or knit top, and comfy shoes like ballet flats or low heels are all no-fail options that are both cute and relaxed. Once you’ve confirmed you want to participate in sorority life, then it’s on to rush!
Round 1: Open House
Open House is typically the most relaxed part of rush, and in some cases, it’s even gone hybrid or fully virtual. That said, first impressions still matter. Think sundresses, flowy skirts, or polished jeans with a cute top—effortless but intentional. Skip the micro-minis in favor of pieces that feel stylish and respectful of the occasion. A subtle nod to your school colors? Chic. Head-to-toe varsity gear? Maybe save that for game day.
Red Cap Sleeve Top + White Bubble-Hem Mini Skirt

A mini hem and backless top are perfect for a hot day, and thoughtful details like cute cap sleeves and the bubble skirt’s tiers and bows add just the right amount of polish to a casual outfit.
Cream Tank Top + Brown Gingham Skirt

The secret to the open house round is to take a casual outfit and dress it up just a touch. Preppy gingham has that vintage scholastic vibe that feels right at home at a collegiate event.
Blue Eyelet Matching Set

Coordination is super important for a sorority rush outfit; you want to look put together, even at the most casual event! That’s why a matching two piece set is a perfect option. A cute floral print and eyelet fabric are just right for the season. Pair it with strappy flat sandals for comfort as you move through the event.
Round 2: Philanthropy
This round is slightly dressier than Open House. Aim for a chic yet comfortable look with a dress or a skirt and blouse combo. This round focuses on each sorority’s charitable work, so your outfit should reflect a respectful and put-together appearance. However, this round is also the longest round, since you’ll stop at each house. Comfy shoes like sneakers or flats are a must.
Ruffle Skirt + White Sneakers + The Shirt You All Get

Most universities give PNMs matching T-shirts to wear for Philanthropy round, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it your own. Style it up with a sweet eyelet miniskirt and crisp white sneakers for a look that feels fresh and feminine. Tuck in the tee and try a subtle French tuck or a soft blouse-over to add a touch of polish without trying too hard.
Print Mini Skirt + Platform Sneakers + Philanthropy Round T-Shirt

If white isn’t your thing, stand out with a fruit-print miniskirt! The rainbow of colors in this bright skirt means that it will pair perfectly with neutral sneakers and a variety of tops–so you’ll look great, no matter what color the philanthropy shirt is!
Printed Minidress + Lace-Up Sneakers

If your school’s Philanthropy round leans more formal, opt for a minidress with structure. A button-up bodice gives off a polished, business-adjacent vibe—without feeling stiff or overdone. A crisp blue-and-white floral print strikes the perfect balance: eye-catching, appropriate, and just elevated enough to stand out for the right reasons.
Round 3: Sisterhood
The Sisterhood round is where you’ll finally see girls breaking out their fancy rush dresses. This round often calls for cocktail attire. Opt for a semi-formal dress and comfortable yet stylish shoes; heels or nice flats are ideal here. You’ll be getting a deeper look into the sorority’s values and traditions, so a more elegant outfit is appropriate. Choose something that makes you feel confident, and don’t be afraid to lean into florals, fun details, and embellishments!
White Ruffled Dress

Delicate straps and a ruffled hem take this little white dress from sweet to standout. It’s flirty without feeling too precious—perfect for striking that just-right balance. Pair it with satin slides for a supportive, stylish finish as you dive into deeper conversations and get a real feel for each sorority’s values.
Yellow Eyelet Dress

Bring a little sunshine to Sisterhood round with a dress that’s equal parts bright and refined. The buttery yellow hue pops, while a fitted bodice and eyelet fabric lend a polished upgrade from your everyday sundress. Elevate the look even more with sleek accessories and minimalist heels for an effortlessly put-together vibe.
Lime Green Mini Dress

Finally—a dress that’s as vibrant and charming as you are! The chic silhouette of this green dress looks great with dainty accessories and elegant shoes that give your whole outfit a poised, balanced vibe.
Round 4: Pref Night
Ok, so technically it’s “preference night,” but everybody calls it pref night. This is the most formal rush event, but it’s not technically a “formal” dress code. The easiest way to think of it is like a semi-formal wedding with shorter hemlines. Look for elevated fabrics, elegant cuts, and sophisticated touches. At the same time, this isn’t a dance; floor-length gowns will likely feel out of place. Also: unless your sororities tell you otherwise, steer clear of white for pref night! White is often used during initiation, and wearing it can feel like you’re jumping the gun or that you haven’t researched your sorority’s traditions. (So again: wedding rules!)
Blue Jacquard Puff Sleeve Mini Dress

Textured jacquard and puff sleeves give this mini dress a dose of drama—in the best way. Metallic threads catch the light just enough to channel a subtle, regal vibe, while the structured silhouette keeps things sophisticated. Finish the look with coordinating heels for a head-to-toe moment that feels elevated and effortlessly cool.
Coral Mini Dress + Gold Heels

Pref night is all about striking the perfect balance—you want to look stunning, not like you’re heading to a night out. Comfort matters, but polish is key. That’s where the right design makes all the difference. With an asymmetric neckline and hem, bold ruffles, and a vibrant coral hue, this dress feels elevated yet effortless. Bonus: Coral’s warm undertones pair beautifully with gold accessories for a glam finish that still feels grounded.
Navy Satin Dress

Pref night calls for elegance, and nothing says sophisticated like a sleek satin dress. It’s a timeless choice that makes a refined statement without trying too hard. For a polished finish, coordinate your shoes with your jewelry—whether you go for gold, silver, or something in between, the cohesive look reads intentional and effortlessly chic.
