how to pack for cold weather during the holidays

Whether you’re traveling home, to your in-laws or elsewhere this holiday season, the goal is to enjoy the most festive time of year. And nothing gets a vacation off to a less-than-joyful start like stressing over what you’re packing. You’ve got limited space in your suitcase — or suitcases — and a finite number of days away from your closet, so you must resist the urge to bring everything you own. Say it with us now: I will not over-pack.

We know how tempting it is. You’re looking through your drawers and your closet and you happen upon a top or a pair of shoes you haven’t worn in ages and think, “You know, maybe I’ll want to wear this while I’m traveling.” Spoiler alert: you won’t. Instead of stuffing your suitcase full of random “maybe” items (because who knows? You might get invited to a formal affair while you’re watching Netflix on your parents’ couch!), get strategic about your packing list. The key is to put together a capsule wardrobe of sorts — a group of interchangeable clothes and accessories that work in various outfit combinations. Yes, it can be done. How do we know? Because we did it for you.

Ahead, feast your eyes on the ultimate cold-weather packing list (stay tuned for the warm-weather version). Whether you’re running errands with your mom, shopping with your sister, or escaping for a girls’ night out with your childhood friends, there’s an outfit in here for every occasion. Included: a layering turtleneck and a pullover sweater that work as well together as they do on their own, three bottom options (jeans, a trendy midi skirt, and cropped corduroy pants) that work with high boots or white sneakers (and either top option), a clutch that fits inside of its tote bag counterpart, and gold hoop earrings that work for day or night. Layer them all with a felted wool coat and a neutral knit scarf. Cute and coordinated? Yes, please.

With this handy dandy cheat sheet,  you can put together your own haute holiday wardrobe in a snap. Packing stress? What’s that?
