Anything reflective or shiny was in, but metallics and holographics were especially popular. Mini Skirts
In case you haven’t noticed, Y2K fashion isn’t exactly full-coverage or conservative. Mini skirts, especially pleated school-girl-esque skirts were a must-have in any fashionista’s closet, and were often paired with one of those tiny tops or a cardigan. If you’re not feeling the micro skirt vibe, something a little longer like a skater skirt is a great alternative.

While the clothes in the early 2000s were tiny, the shoes were not! Chunky soles and big platforms were all the rage, and the bigger the better! As fabulous as the clothes were in the mid ‘90s and early 2000s, the accessories were what tied the whole look together. Kitsch, color, and maximalism personified this era of accessorizing, and the more layers you could add to your look the better. Hats, bright jewelry, eccentric bags, and futuristic sunglasses were just a few of the must-have accessories along with stacked rings, statement necklaces, and bandanas.

Like clothing, accessories during Y2K were tight, like the iconic choker. Colorful, beaded choker necklaces were worn on their own or layered with other statement pieces to create a detailed, multidimensional look. If a tight choker makes you uncomfortable, simply layering necklaces can give you the same look.

With Hip Hop becoming more mainstream, Y2K fashion started to take inspiration from the flashy, often audacious looks sported by ‘90s and 2000s rappers. Wide-leg pants, double denim looks, and bucket hats grabbed the attention of the age of experimental fashion, and began to appear everywhere from streetwear to the runway.

The small, compact “baguette bag” was the It handbag silhouette of the early aughts, with its single strap and snug-under-the-arm shape (reportedly a nod to the cliché of the French who carry bread under the arm.) When choosing a purse for your Y2K-inspired outfit, choose something with a short strap, an angular shape, and an interesting pattern or color. If it looks like something Paris Hilton or Carrie Bradshaw would’ve carried, you’re on the right track.

To fit with the futuristic vibes of Y2K, the sunglasses of choice were bold, reflective shield glasses. Featuring more facial coverage than most sunglasses, shield glasses make you feel like a celebrity just looking for some privacy! Glamorous with an edgy slant, shield glasses are also a super practical option since they offer plenty of protection from the sun.
