If you’re a skincare fanatic, you’ve likely already heard of bakuchiol. The plant-based retinol alternative has exploded in popularity, according to Pinterest, where searches for bakuchiol spiked 275% by the end of 2018. As the folks at the sharing platform put it, “If an idea keeps getting more and more searches each month? And that upward trajectory holds steady for 6+ months? That’s how we know it’s a trend.” Bakuchiol is currently the beauty ingredient equivalent of an “It girl.” So what exactly is “it?” And why should you care? Read on to find out.
What: According to Allure, bakuchiol is an antioxidant that comes from the seeds of the psoralea corylifolia plant and has long been revered in medicine for its abilities to heal cuts, soothe redness and rashes, and reduce inflammation. Like retinol, bakuchiol can rejuvenate your complexion by stimulating skin cell turnover and collagen production–and reducing wrinkles.
Why: So why the seemingly sudden fervor over this skincare ingredient? For one: it’s a natural alternative to retinol, which has been proven effective at clearing up acne and smoothing fine lines–but can be irritating to sensitive skin. In today’s world, where what goes into a beauty product is as important as the results it produces, this gentler vegan ingredient is proving a super popular option. Plus, it’s supposedly safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding (confirm with your own doctor), unlike retinol products–and it works for most skin types. What’s not to love?
How: If you’re ready to join the bevvy of bakuchiol-crazed babes out there, the easiest way to do so is to incorporate it into your nightly routine with a bakuchiol-infused cream or serum before bed. (Of course, any ingredient has the potential for allergic reactions or sensitivities so check with your dermatologist if you’re unsure about adding this “it” element to your skincare regimen.) Here’s to seriously great skin in 2019!
