We’re nearing the end engagement season–but you didn’t need us to tell you that. With “I said yes!” selfies flooding your insta feed, there’s no denying that people have engagements on the brain this time of year–and, according to Pinterest’s most recent report, engagement rings. In December, searches for various stones and diamond shapes soared, and the engagement ring trends pinners were searching for may just surprise you. Whether you’re wondering if your sparkler is on the popular list, expecting a proposal of your own, fantasizing about one far off in the future, or you just have a thing for pretty jewelry (who doesn’t?),  you’re going to want to check out the ring trends ahead–and prepare to see them everywhere in the year ahead.

1. Alternative Stones

The classic clear diamond will never go out of style but lately it seems pinners are looking to step outside of the (jewelry) box when it comes to engagement rings. Alternative stones like emeralds, rubies, and even black diamonds are stepping into the spotlight; in December alone, Pinterest reported searches for “Ruby with rose gold” climbed 104%, “black diamond” queries rose 200%, and “emerald with yellow gold” searches jumped 317%. Whether it’s the result of budget-conscious millennials wanting a more affordable alternative or a desire for something with more personal style, modern brides-to-be just seem to be looking for something, well, different. If traditional isn’t your thing, you’re definitely not alone.

2. Unexpected Diamond Types

Ring shoppers weren’t just searching for alternative stones, according to the data. Many who were hunting for diamond engagement rings, however, were looking for fresh ways to rock the classic stone. Pinterest reported that searches for less-traditional diamond cuts also soared in December: east to west ring searches rose 111%, while searches for double halo engagement rings climbed a whopping 991%. The classic asscher cut (a ripple-effect square cut), which hasn’t seen a popularity surge in roughly a century, skyrocketed 1344%. It’s unclear as to what exactly caused the asscher-mania but rest assured, you’ll be seeing this–and some other unexpected silhouettes–on multiple fingers in 2019.

3. Updated Styles

Engagement rings are an extremely personal choice–so it makes sense that some of the most popular styles searched this season run the gamut. Pinterest noted that minimalist engagement rings saw a 159% boost in searches, meaning the less-is-more look might just be gaining momentum. Natural engagement rings–with organic designs and uncut stones–also saw a jump of 410% (earthy boho babes rejoice!) while Edwardian engagement ring searches shot up 476%. The opposite of minimalist, Edwardian designs tend to be more opulent, with intricate details like ribbon flourishes, bows, florals, loops, and other curves. Moral of the story: There’s something (and someone) out there for everyone.
