If you’ve been keeping an eye on the latest manicure trends, you’ve more than likely come across blueberry milk nails. The latest in a series of food-based aesthetics (glazed donut nails, vanilla chrome nails, milk bath nails), this sweet, summery nail art style takes light blue hues and gives them a milky, semi-sheer look.

Want to recreate these light blue French tip nails? Whether you’re a seasoned nail art enthusiast or a complete beginner, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process–and give your mani an update that’s playful, elegant, and of course, fresh.

Blueberry Milk Nails

Supplies:

  • Base coat
  • Pale blue jelly polish (you can also make your own custom jelly shade by mixing a light blue polish with a clear base coat). The shade I’m using here is Cirque Colors Morningtide Opaque pale blue polish – the shade I used is CND Creekside Thin liner brush
  • Glossy top coat
  • Cuticle oil

Instructions:

  1. Whether you’re recreating this design with regular polish, which I used in the tutorial, or gel polish, nail prep is key for a smooth application and a longer-lasting manicure. Take the time to clean up any dry skin from the nail beds, push back the cuticles and lastly, wipe the nail plate clean of residue and oils.
  2. Start with a thin layer of base coat.
  3. Next, apply 2-3 layers of pale blue jelly nail polish as your base shade. You can adjust the opacity with the number of layers you choose to apply. If you don’t have a blue jelly polish on hand, you can mix a light blue polish with a clear base coat to make your own!
  4. Take some of the opaque blue polish on a nail palette, and have your thin liner brush ready. This shade will create your French tip. An easy way to create a French tip is by bringing two diagonal lines up from either side of the nail and connecting them in the middle with an upwards curving line.
  5. Then you’ll fill in the tip – the best way to get a smooth application when doing nail art with regular nail polish is to frequently clean off your brush, and going into fresh polish on your palette. If you don’t clean off your brush frequently enough during application, you could end up with a bumpy, gloopy appearance.
  6. Finish with a glossy top coat and cuticle oil.
