If you haven’t worn a low bun hairstyle to at least one wedding or other special event, did you even actually attend? Low buns for weddings are classic, elegant, and always occasion-appropriate—but that doesn’t have to mean boring.

The standard nape-level updo is wedding hair 101; now, it’s time for a master class. To get a fresh, romantic take on the low bun hairstyle, we turned to our favorite tutorial teacher, hair and makeup artist, Erin Ryser, who added her own twist (literally).

To try out this bun hairstyle for a wedding, formal gala, or heck, just date night, follow the steps below!

Low Bun Hairstyle Tutorial Steps:

1. Tease the roots of the hair at the crown, then smooth over top to hide the tease.

2. Run fingers through the hair as you apply medium-hold spray.

3. Smooth and gather hair at the crown, pinch to center and pin in both directions, pull on the hair for texture.

4. Twist section starting from the part into a rope braid.

5. Section away “bangs” section in front of the twist.

6. Braid the rest of the hair at the nape of the neck, secure with a hair elastic at the base and top of the braid.

7. Wrap the braid into a messy bun, pin in all directions until the bun feels secure.

8, Weave “bangs” section through the rope braid once to drape around face and pin.
