Whether it’s for an event like homecoming or prom, a cocktail party, holiday party, or wedding, going for a slightly undone bun updo feels fresh and modern–and never stuffy. Plus, the intentionally “messy” look is ideal for hair novices as there’s no need for your bun to be “perfect.” The whole point is to look sophisticated but not overdone. So go ahead and leave some face-framing pieces in front, let your hair’s natural texture do its thing, and prepare to turn heads on your next night out. Keep scrolling to see how easy it is to DIY this look–and get all the instructions ahead.

Braided Updo Bun

Instructions:

Step 1: Section away the front of the hair, starting at the ears.

Step 2: Carefully lift roots of the front sections by applying heat on the underside, then create waves all the way down the section of hair.

Step 3: Pull forward small sections at the front of the hair.

Step 4: Pull the rest of the hair into a mid-height ponytail.

Step 5: Create a rope braid and secure it at the end with a clear elastic.

Step 6: Wrap the braid into a bun and secure it with a clear elastic, followed by bobby pins if needed.
