A high bun hairstyle is not just for ballerinas and Carrie Bradshaw. The voluminous updo is a classic–and the perfect practical glam look for a holiday party, wedding, prom, or other event. Not only does this style look great on just about anyone, but it’s also the ideal stay-put style for special occasions (no worrying about frizzy or windblown tresses). Plus, a piled-high updo allows you to show off a killer pair of statement earrings or sparkly necklace, and it’s simple to do at home!

A mesh hair donut is the key to creating a full high bun, and adding a few loose, face-framing pieces keeps this hairstyle looking fresh, effortless, and unfussy. Just pair it with a party dress and jewelry and you’re good to go! Ahead, see how to do a high bun all by yourself–and take your hair to new heights this season.

How to do a High Bun Hairstyle:

Instructions:

Step 1: Gather face-framing pieces and straighten the roots, pulling down. Separate for a middle part.

Step 2: Gather hair into a high ponytail, pulling down pieces in front and by the ears. Secure the ponytail with a hair tie.

Step 3: Cinch the ponytail and pull it forward for volume.

Step 4: Add the hair mesh donut.

Step 5: Curl the hair with 1.25-inch iron if needed.

Step 6: Wrap the hair around the hair mesh and secure it with bobby pins.

Step 7: Curl the face-framing pieces away from the face with a flat iron.
