Espadrilles have literally been around since the Middle Ages–pretty amazing when you consider how they’re currently still a summer footwear staple. The Spanish-born sandals were actually originally made out of grass and canvas, and worn mostly by peasants. Who knew they would eventually reach iconic fashion status? Today, the lace-up style of old has evolved significantly: You can find modern women’s espadrilles in a myriad of colors, silhouettes, and fabrics, from fringe raffia slides to seersucker slip-on flats to suede platform espadrille sandals. As long as your shoes have some rope detail on the sole, you’re hitting this hot-weather trend.

We live in espadrille shoes once summer arrives, pairing them with sundresses, rompers, shorts, and jeans–you name it! They do have an inherently laid-back vibe but that doesn’t mean you can’t style your espadrilles into special-occasion outfits: For a summer wedding in the country or at the beach, a pair of espadrille sandals or wedges are perfectly appropriate, not to mention on trend. Pro tip: Stick to narrower silhouettes with delicate details if you want to keep your party look on the refined side–chunky platforms can feel more casual.
