Sick of waiting for your man to propose (and wondering why you have to wait at all)? Turns out you’re not the only one. Plenty of women appear to be taking matters into their own ring-free hands and looking for ways to flip the script. According to Pinterest, searches for “women propose to men ideas” increased 336 percent year over year in 2018, which means the old “rules” about (heterosexual) proposals might just be on their way out for good.
When you think about it, the idea that you have to wait for your partner to take the lead does sound a little outdated. They say “When you know, you know,” so why not ask? Think about how many more women keep–or hyphenate–their last names these days. That wasn’t always the case, right? The same can be said of asking for his hand in marriage.

Don’t get us wrong, now: if popping the question to your man doesn’t feel right for you, that’s totally cool. The same goes for changing your name. But remember: you do have a choice and if you’re thinking of doing the asking, you’re definitely not alone. Heck, Monica proposed to Chandler! Just be sure you’re doing so because you want to spend forever together–and not just because you’re tired of waiting.
So how does a lady actually go about taking the proposal plunge? Since this is a more recent phenomenon, there are no hard and fast rules to go by. You don’t have to ask his mom for permission or get down on bended knee–unless you want to, of course–but you definitely need to do some careful planning. This is a big step, after all! To make things a little easier we collected 12 super cute ideas for women proposing to men–read on for modern engagement inspo ahead.

1. Let the music play. Take him to see a band he loves, then ask during his favorite song (just be sure he can hear you over the crowd).
2. Be a snow angel. Live somewhere cold? Go for a winter stroll and write “Will you marry me?” in the snow. (Warm weather alternative: Do the same, but in the sand.)
3. Try a throwback. Go back to your first date spot or the spot where you first met and ask him there. So romantic.
4. One word: Food. Cook him a special meal or have one catered (no judgment), then spell it out with dessert.
5. Say it with jewelry. Skip the engagement ring for an “engagement thing” like watch or bracelet engraved with “Will you marry me?” on the inside.
6. Sing your heart out. Are you guys karaoke fanatics? Get on the mic and serenade him with “Marry You” by Bruno Mars or “Marry Me” by Train.
7. Read between the wines. Take a trip to a vineyard and propose among the vines. Bonus points if you use a wine-related pun like “You had me at merlot.”
8. Involve your pet. Because how could he ever say no to a proposal from your fur child?
9. Look up. Spell out the proposal with glow-in-the-dark star stickers on your bedroom ceiling and wait for your answer after lights out.
10. Get in the game. Is he a puzzle fanatic? Have a custom jigsaw puzzle made with your picture and the words “Marry me?”
11. Text him. Have someone take photos of you with posters that say, “will,” “you,” “marry” and “me?” Then plan to meet your man in a special spot, and text the photos in order (make sure you have good cell service!) before you get there. When the last message goes through, show up and get your answer!
12. Bottle it up. Heading to the beach? Write your proposal on a piece of parchment paper, roll it into an antique bottle with a cork and “hide” it in the sand next to his towel (or “find” it in the surf during a walk and let him open it).
Would you propose to your man? If so, how? Tell us in the comments!
