Put some more sparkle in your life with these pretty DIY glitter wine glasses!
What You Need:
- Wine Glasses
- Glitter
- Mod Podge
- Brush
- a Piece of Paper (to catch the extra glitter)
We used Mod Podge Matte Finish by Plaid and the Martha Stewart Essentials Glitter Set.
Steps:
- Coat the handle of the glass in Mod Podge or glue.
- While being careful to stay over the paper, sprinkle glitter onto the glass. Don’t be shy with the glitter! You can use the paper to dump the extra back into your glitter container.
- Let the glass dry and repeat steps 1 and 2 until you reach your desired level of sparkle.
- Put at least two layers of Mod Podge on top of the last layer of glitter so that the glitter won’t come off in your hand.
Helpful Tip: These glasses are hand wash only so make sure they don’t end up in the dishwasher!

Can u glitter the top half of the glass in the way and drink from it
We wouldn’t recommend adding glitter to the top half to make sure you aren’t inhaling any loose glitter pieces that may not have fully adhered to the glass. XOXO!
What kind of mod podge did you use? Lookibg on ebay and there so many different kinds!
For this project we used Mod Podge Matte Finish by Plaid. Hope this helps!
What’s the best glitter to use? X
We used glitter from our Martha Stewart Essentials Glitter Set which you should be able to find at most any craft/hobby store!
Maybe a silly question but can u still wash the glasses normally??
We recommend you hand wash them in warm water to maintain the integrity of the glitter! XO
if u glitter the top half, then apply another coat of modpodge to seal it,could you then drink from it?
Mod Podge is highly water-resistant but not totally waterproof. If you want to completely seal and waterproof the glass, we recommend you use an acrylic sealer as your last step. Hope this helps!
What type of acrylic sealer would you use for the last coat?
We recommend Mod Podge Clear Matte Acrylic Sealer but any acrylic sealer should work!
How long would you expect the glitter to last if the glasses are used but coated with acrylic thanks
Unfortunately we aren’t sure how long the glitter will last. You’re best bet is to hand-wash the glasses in warm water. We recommend you reach out to ModPodge to inquire more about the longevity of an acrylic coat. Best of luck!
How Much would This Be For A Wedding. If it was made by this company, you can email me if you would like to
This tutorial was created for our blog but unfortunately it is not a product we offer on lulus.com. You are welcome to follow the steps to create your own! XOXO
Hi.
Can you use any type of glitter on the wine glasses or does it need to be from Martha Stewarts collection?
Also do you recommend a particular website which sells the glitter, glue etc at a good price, where did you get yours from? π
Thank you
X
Hi Chloe! Most glitter kits should work. We picked our supplies up from a local craft store but you should be able to find everything at a craft supply like Michaels. Hope this helps!
I tried this but my glasses seem to be patchy when put near light why is it doing this ??:thankyou
Try using a spray glue to add an additional coat of glitter! Hope this helps!
Does Modpodge adhere to acrylic glass?
Unfortunately we haven’t tried that so we can’t say for sure, but you can contact their customer service line at 1-800-842-4197 for more info! XOXO
Hi when I lightly hand washed my glitter glass I have noticed the glue coming thru.so my red glittered glass looks awful now xxx
Is pva glue ok to use?
Unfortunately PVA glue isn’t water resistant so it may not hold the glitter if you wash the glass. We recommend using Mod Podge for the best result!
If i was to glitter the top half of the wine glass, should i use edible glitter or normal glitter? and shall i use a glitter seal spray? can you please do a tutorial on glittering the actual wine bottle please thank you x
We used a few colors from our Martha Stewart Crafts Essential Colors Glitter Set but any glitter should work. We don’t recommend using glitter on the top half of the glass but if you do be sure to finish it with an acrylic sealer (does not contain glitter). To glitter the glass simply coat the area in Modpodge and dump the glitter on top until it is completely coated. Once dry you can shake off the excess. Hope this helps and have a great day!
Hi i want go start doing this as a hobby what glitter is best and what would I do if I wanted to bling up abit like add diamonties on what glue would I use? Thankyou for your time x
Hi Sam! Any glitter should work but we used a few colors from our Martha Stewart Essentials Glitter Set. You should be able to stick other decorations on using the same Mod Podge, just be sure to apply it heavily. Hope this helps!
Thankyou so much for your help really appreciated
Really helpful blog π

Does the mod podge dry clear? I just applied it over my pink glitter & it is white!
It may take awhile to set but it should be clear when it has fully dried!
If u use modpodge, can u still drink out of the glass? Thanks
Can u drink from the hlass if its made and sealed with mod podge? Thanks
We don’t recommend you drink from an area that Mod Podge has been applied to. Hope this helps!
Hi I have started glittering up a wine glass and have used pva glue to do this it’s not looking too bad! But I would like to know can I put a layer or 2 of pva glue to seal the glitter!
Many thanks
We did our tutorial using Mod Podge so unfortunately we aren’t sure about PVA glue. You may want to search online for more info!
hi if i used pva glue to stick the glitter would it be ok to then finish with an acylic sealer x
We used Mod Podge so unfortunately we aren’t sure how to seal over PVA glue. We recommend you inquire at your local craft store!
can you use pva glue/
We don’t have experience using PVA glue so we can’t say for sure! We recommend using Mod Podge π
hi when i seal my glitter glasses they loose the sparkle how can we keep te sparkle when sealed tia
Add another layer of glitter and sealer to conceal any gaps and be sure to hand wash gently!
What kind of mod podge do I use
For this project we used Mod Podge Matte Finish by Plaid. Hope this helps!
I’ve used Mod Podge Matt to apply my glitter (two coats). Can you use any acrylic sealer to finish? Does it have to be water based? Would this make the glitter waterproof?
Yes, you can use an acrylic sealer as your last step! It should be waterproof when it is fully dried but we do recommend you gently hand wash the glasses to keep the glitter intact. Have a great day!
Hi,
Which mod podge sealer did you use? I used mod podge matte to glue the glitter and I have mod podge gloss-lustre-lustre, will this deal my glitter and make it waterproof to be hand washed? Please help!! I’m really stuck on which exact mod podge to use to seal and make waterproof??? Xxx
We recommend you use Mod Podge Clear Sealer Gloss! XO
I would really like to start making these, could you tell me what mod podge glue you used? Like what glue for putting the glitter on? And what glue for the topcoat over the glitter? Thanks x
For this project we used Mod Podge Matte Finish by Plaid and Mod Podge Clear Matte Acrylic Sealer! XO
Hi the problems I took a tape off n there is a slight peel off which is not straight line how it look perfect without a peel off? Any tips?
Hi, I have applied two layers of glitter to my glasses, and have a acrylic sealant spray, can I just use the sealant spray to seal the glitter or would I have to use mod pogde and then the selant spray? Thanks
Hi, i wandered if you could tell me how to do the animal print on the glasses. I was wandering because how do you do leopard print without the colours merging x
We’ve never tried doing the glitter in a pattern but we wish you the best of luck giving it a try!
hi ive made some glasses and sealed using mod podge gloss lustre .. when i wash the glasses thought i find the glue goes bk white .. if this normal? or have i done something wrong? thanks in advance xx
That would be a good question for our friends over at Mod Podge! You can contact their customer service line at 1-800-842-4197 π
were did you get your glitter from and how much was it
Hi Meg, We used glitter from the Martha Stewart Essentials Glitter Set which you should be able to find at most craft/hobby stores or at marthastewart.com. The 24 pack runs at about $20 and goes down in price from there. Best of luck!
i have tried doing 2 glasses now and when i put the top layer on the glitter goes really dull what am i doing wrong?
Hi Sharon! The glitter you chose (we recommend using the Martha Stewart Essentials Glitter Set) and the amount of Mod Podge could be affecting the end result. Try applying a thinner coat of Mod Podge, one layer of glitter and letting that dry. If more luster is desired, try using a spray glue and applying a second layer of glitter. Good luck to you!
Were can I buy mod podge
Hi Shelley, you can buy Mod Podge online or at almost any craft or superstore like Walmart or Target. Feel free to check out http://www.plaidonline.com/craft-store-locator.aspx to find a store nearest you.
Hello! I used Mod podge super gloss and after a week I was able to peel the glitter design right off of the glass. Could you tell me a better way to do it without my glitter being able to peel right off?
Hi Brenda, using an acrylic sealer as your final step may help the glitter better adhere to the glass. We recommend the Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer.
Does it work with glossy mod podge?
Amy, glossy should work just fine especially if you top it off with an acrylic sealer.
hi i bought mod podge red and the yellow modpodge matte is the yellow one the correct one for the acrylic sealer ?? thanks if you could help im in a pickle would be great x
Nicola, we recommend using this Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer.
Having real issues getting my glitter glasses to stay looking sparkly as before it is sealed with modge podge gloss but it doesn’t happen! Help please!
Tor, if you are looking for a little more luster, try using a higher gloss sealer. Best of luck!
I’m doing this method on some candle holders. How would you recommend adding ribbon on top of the glitter?
Hi Sharry! We don’t have much experience adding ribbon over the glitter, but using a hot glue gun or strong fabric adhesive should do the trick!
Thanks. But what sealer do you recommend that will offer a better glitzy finish?
We love Mod Podge products, so their Acrylic Sealer-Super Gloss could be a good option!
Hello, I am having the same problems getting it to keen its glittery shine…mine keep going dull :/ I have dried doing it with the mod podge gloss to see if that helps but no luck! help as I really want to make more π
Hi Jazz, unfortunately we have only have experience using Mod Podge products for this project. Experimenting with a different brand or higher gloss sealer may help.
Hi, I have used an equivelent glue to Mod Podge from The Range – it is a glue and varnish – does this still need a sealant on the top – I have painted one of the glasses at the top so want to make sure that I seal it properly – this glue/varnish says that it is water proof… thank you.
Hi Jo, depending on how long you want the glitter to last or the type of finish you are looking for, a water proof sealer wouldn’t hurt. We do recommend hand washing either way.
My glitter glasses r dull is this because i need mod podge gloss???
My glitter glasses r drying dull is this because i need mod podge gloss???
Helen, opting for a high gloss sealer instead could prevent the glitter from dulling.
Can you drink out of the glasses when you sealed it with mod podge?
Sarah, we do not recommend drinking from an area that has been sealed with product.
Do you know a good way to get a good straight edge when taping bits of and stop it going rough looking and taking bits of glitter off please
Lauren, try removing your tape by pulling toward the glitter vs away. This could help prevent the glitter from coming off with your tape.
Hi, i would really like to find out how to do the animal print glitter glasses. I have tried with glitter glue and metallic paint pens but it doesn’t look right. Xx
Lynn, We unfortunately have no experience creating an animal print using this glitter method, only the technique explained above. Pinterest or YouTube might be a good resource for you. Best of luck!
I’ve tried a few different ways of doing these but haven’t tried he mod lodge yet, when you do the top coats over the glitter does it not take the shine away? This is what I found with using other products. I’m trying to perfect them as selling me but haven’t managed to do so π
Faye, we would suggest doing a test to see what method works best for the finish you are trying to achieve. A higher gloss finish could help maintain the shine of the glitter.
how long should you wait untill the first coat og flitter modge podge is dry?
Tamsin, try waiting for the first coat to dry completely before adding a second layer.
I do this but when I do red. I do mod podge, glitter , mod podge, glitter and then a final coat of mod podge.
I have noticed the red glasses come out dull. What would I put on top to bring back the glitter affect?
thankyou. X
Rachel, a higher gloss finish could help maintain the shine of the glitter.
I wanted to ask if using Mod Podge dishwasher/safe gloss will work the same as regular Mod Podge?
Denise, we unfortunately have no experience using the dishwasher safe Mod Podge. Maybe do a test glass to see what works best for you!
I put glitter on the top half of my glass and put another coat of Mod podge over the top to seal it all in and drank from it and I was fine, I never took in any glitter. Mod podge is non-toxic too π
love this page btw x
The Martha Stewart glitter, is it a chunky like glitter or fine?
Hi I have just had a go at some glitter glasses in a variety of colours and they looked fab until I applied the top coat of mod podge which has dulled the glitter right down making them not very glittery at all. Am I doing something wrong with the mod podge on the top coat?
hi i have just started making these but when i take tape off all the glitter peels off in one lump also do u remove tape before or after final coat
Kay, for this specific DIY we did not use any tape. Maybe try removing your tape by pulling toward the glitter vs away before your final coat of mod podge. This could help prevent the glitter from coming off with your tape.
does mod podge help keep the shine better than triple thick? i love the look until i put the triple thick on, it makes it so dull
We unfortunately have no experience using triple thick, but would suggest using a high gloss sealer if you are looking for a super glossy look.
I was thinking about adding a design to my glass ashtrays and need a suggestion on how to keep the glitter from pealing off the bottoms. I have used glue and mod podge in creating my vases and candle holders but the glitter wants to peal or flake away from the glass. Any suggestions?
amazing
Does the Modge Podge clear acrylic sealer dry clear and not alter the color of the glitter in any way? I did some red glitter stem wine glasses. The glitter was a beautiful bright red when the Modge Podge had dried. I used the same Modge Podge as I used to glue the glitter to seal it. But the stems are now a darker red, not the bright red as before. I had the same problem when I sealed glitter wine glasses with Triple Thick.
can you get the Mod and the glitter from Michael’s? Or it doesn’t matter
could you recommend another sealer to Mod Podge Clear Matte Acrylic sealer as cant get it in the uk
Tried it and it’s a fun project to do, not only are the glasses classy looking but it’s so easy to do.
Hi, just tried doing a glitter glass but even though the outside has come out good the inner glass looks patchy.
Can i use mod podge gloss instead of matte?
I used both the mod podge and acrylic sealer. It’s been a few days and the glitter still comes off on my hands when I touch the glass. How can I prevent this?
Hi everyone! We unfortunately only have experience using the method and products described in the tutorial above. A higher gloss finish (vs matte) could create a glossier look if that’s what you are looking for. Please feel free to share your experience with other products and finishes, we would love to hear what has worked best for you!
I’ve used mod lodge to finish but the glitter havegonedull.
After I put the final layer of mod podge, the glitter is not as shiny as I would like. If I am going to spray lacquer to make it waterproof, do I need to use the top layer of mod podge to seal the glitter?
Hi D! Since our tutorial uses Mod Podge matte, a higher gloss Mod Podge should help make your glasses more shiny. If you have already completed step 4. and applied Mod Podge over your glitter, spraying a sealer will be your last step.
Do I leave the tape on or take it off before I spray with the acrylic
Karan, for this specific DIY we did not use any tape, but it would probably be best to leave it on if you are only planning to seal the glitter portion.
How long between coats of glitter
Tina, we just waited until the glass was dry before adding another coat of glitter.
I just washed my glasses and the mod podge got kinda slimy feeling. Will these continue to hold up?
Tracy, with careful hand washing they should last for several uses. You can also try sealing for more protection. Hope that helps!
Hi I’ve bought mod podge gloss all in one decoupage will this be ok for doing glitter wine glasses xx
Hi Hayley! We only have experience using the products mentioned, but feel like this should work fine! Let us know how they turn out!
Says sealer /glue/finish on my order to x
I put another coat of mod podge and my Glass is completely white
How long do i let it dry betwen coats
Does the glitter need to dry for a certain amount of time before adding the mod podge to seal it?
Between each coat of modgepodge and glitter, I baked the glasses for 30 minutes, 250 degrees. It melded everything together.
lol def
Hi how do you make a dead straight line x
When i use Mod Podge finished glossy but it wasn’t shiny? Any recommend for a last step to seal the glitter and make it more shiny? Tks
How do I attach letters and numbers so they donβt fall off the glitter
Can I use satin Mod Podge for glitter wine Glasses
