Hair accessories have made a huge comeback because, well, who doesn’t love instantly amping up her tresses with a simple extra (or extras)? Hair clips, though, have really propelled the trend into the stratosphere–they’re easy, affordable, and just about anyone can try out the look. Plus, there’s the ’90s throwback factor that just never gets old for us. These accessories don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon (no complaints here), so to keep things fresh, we turned to our go-to beauty guru, Erin Ryser. Ahead, she shows how to wear hair clips in three very different ways–because a babe’s gotta have options.
1. Pinned Party Pony
Perfect for date nights, holiday parties, bachelorette parties, and more, this ponytail-and-hair-pins combo is definitely worth trying. So flirty and fun!
Instructions:
- Gather hair into a mid-height ponytail and secure.
- Pull down face-framing pieces.
- Pull on the hair at the crown for volume.
- Wrap section of hair around the elastic and secure with a bobby pin.
- Add hair pins.

2. Statement Hair Clip
Love letting your strands flow? Here’s how to wear a hair clip simply and make a major statement: Just add a bold, oversized option with details like pearls or rhinestones. See? We said it was simple!
Instructions:
- Spray the hair with medium hold hairspray, brush through, and section to curl.
- Curl in sections, then run your fingers through the hair to break up curls
- Tease the hair at the crown for volume, then smooth over the top with a comb or brush.
- Add a hair clip to one side!

Updo With Hair Pins
Effortlessly “messy” and ideal for special occasions (hello, bridesmaid hair), this low updo gets a boost from dreamy celestial hair pins. Bonus: You can mix and match clips and pins from separate sets to create something extra personal.
Instructions:
- Gather hair into a low ponytail and secure.
- Pull on the hair at the crown for volume.
- Braid the ponytail into a basic three-strand braid.
- Pull on the braid for messiness and texture.
- Twist the braid up into a simple bun.
- Secure with bobby pins.
- Add hairpins!
