After more than a year of staying at home, you better believe this year’s graduating seniors are ready to party! And, as more and more Americans get vaccinated, the good news is that it’s finally become possible to host an outdoor graduation party with your parents, celebrating your latest accomplishments.

There’s no doubt it’s been a challenging year for kids, especially seniors,” says Trish Healy, founder and CEO of WonderTent Parties in Los Angeles.  “You’ve all sacrificed so much and had to deal with missing friends, missing major moments, and being in lockdown. We want to make sure that you’re celebrated in a way you’ll always remember. Our graduation experience is one way to make sure this milestone is celebrated properly. We’ve designed it with separate dining areas so family and friends can gather safely outdoors to celebrate and not miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime moment.”

Here, Healy–who has worked with celebs like Jessica Alba, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Rachel Zoe, among others–shares her top five tips for creating your own backyard graduation party that’s memorable, safe, and stylish.

1. Be bold with color.

“Color is important,” says Healy. “For graduation, think of your school’s colors. Or, if you’re college-bound, use the colors for your next adventure. This can be reflected in napkins, table runners, balloons, and lights. It’s a great way to pack that wow!” (Bonus points if your grad party dress fits the color scheme.)

2. Keep the atmosphere casual.

Create spaces that encourage connection and conversations,” she says. “The more relaxed these are, the better.” Try low-profile dining tables, lounge seating, or bean bag chairs to set up socially-distanced areas where guests can chat, dine and relax at their own leisure.”

3. Indulge your sweet tooth with grad-themed treats.

“Sweet treats never fail,” she says. “Create a dessert bar or find a great baker who can create grad cookies in the shape of mortarboards, diplomas, your school mascot, or that of your new college. It’s a fun way to mark the milestone–and super tasty, too.”

4. Make movie-montage magic.

“Capture the moment by having your parents create a montage video in iMovie,” says Healy. “They might cry more than you, but let them bask in the glory of the journey you’ve been on, see how far they’ve come, and show how proud they are of you!”

5. Create a photo-worthy space.

“Make the moment last,” says Healy. “Having a great focal point for photos and speeches helps capture the moment.  It can be as simple as a beautiful spot in the garden accented with lights, or as elaborate as our custom photo vignettes. Also, think about a keepsake that guests can sign with well-wishes to take with you to college. It will remind them of all the love and support  you have at home!”
